Level Name: Tomb Turmoil (MmSC Water Survival Challenge)
Author Name: Treas
Thermo: 100%!
Project started: December 23rd
Type: Survival Challenge

Water can be tricky at times. Limited air supply and stuff, you know the deal. Spikes and deadly gas can be quite a threat. Have you ever imagined how it would feel like being trapped in an endless, randomly generated, flooded side-scrolling tunnel full of spikes and other dangers?

Seriously, you should try it out. You're only given one life, so make the best out of it. You're caught in a one-screen playing area, limited by gas to the right and left side of the screen. The gas walls will come closer the longer you survive, so be careful! Try to dodge, dive and grab your way through the many, randomly chained-up obstacles that will try to either kill you directly or push you into the deadly gas frame.

You will earn points over time automatically, but you can boost up your score (and get the lead against your friends if you're playing with other gadders) by collecting the "golden bubbles" along your way. And don't you forget to keep an eye on your air supply! There's one refiller per level segment. Miss it, and you'll find yourself being quite in a hurry to find the next one before you run out of air.

All in all, Tomb Turmoil is a unique survival challenge, testing the limits of your diving skills. The level looks completely different each time you restart it, and it's highly addictive in multiplayer.

150XP to whoever breaks my current record on the stage first and does post it in this thread (best with a screenshot)! It's currently around 12'000 points, I think.

I'm developing another survival challenge with the same mechanism, but don't worry, the themes and mechanics are completely different

I played your level, it's quite fun to play, but some of the obstacles are too hard if you don't know them in advance: I died several times because I didn't know I had to grab a sponge, or because I didn't see a spike, or because I couldn't find some air.

The level itself is fun, but needs a lot of determination, because it gets easily frustrating. The bubbles are well placed, it's always a risk to collect them, and the randomness gives a good replay value

Overall 4/5 and tagged fun

Thanks! Yeah, you really need practice to master this challenge. It's not purely skill- and luck-based (as most of my other SCs are), but there's also a bit of terrain knowledge in the mix.

I knew this while creating the level. I did make another level of a similar style (although without water) about ten months ago, called "Jungle Drums". The mix of randomness, luck and skill was the same and I received great feedback and many requests for a part 2, so I thought I'd stick to the formula.

You can actually develop a feeling for the level elements quite quickly. As you'll see after one or two deaths, any piece of rusty iron fence tells you that you'll need to get behind it in order to survive. The rest is just timing and sixaxis mastery.

Thanks for playing my level and giving feedback! I'll definitely give yours a go. Leave me a note as soon as it is published and I'll be sure to check it out.

Little question: Could you describe the element where you didn't see the spikes? I've put a lot of work in highlighting each "hidden" spike with a red spotlight, so I wonder where I might have missed one.

It's in a cave-like section where spikes are alterning between floor and ceiling - I couldn't see the last one, on the ceiling2010-01-06 14:37:00

Thanks! I actually put a spotlight behind the spike, but the camera angle kind of weakens the highlighting effect. The cave is also quite vertex-heavy, graphically rather poor and doesn't really feature any enjoyable gameplay. I think I'm gonna remove it and (if thermo doesn't say NO) replace it by some other element. Thanks for your help!

I hope it's ok to push the thread a little after 48 hours. It's just that I'd really like to get some feedback on what to improve on this one, and get to know whether the community enjoys this kind of side-scrolling survival or not.

Oh, I've got an idea! 150XP to whoever breaks my current record on the stage first and does post it in this thread (best with a screenshot)! It's currently around 12'000 points, I think.

Sidenote: I will definitely expand the tutorial. The player has to know that whenever he sees a rusty iron grate, it is crucial to get and stay behind it.

I love this level. I was kind of disappointed when you told me that the sequel was gonna be entirely in water, but I was wrong. This is even better than Jungle Drums. I'd have to say this is my favorite survival challenge. I wouldn't change anything, 5 stars and hearted.

I beat your score too , before I knew there was a contest... around 13,400 I believe. But don't give me the XP, I don't wanna take away an incentive of people trying this. Plus, I just won 5,000 from another contest, so I'm good.

Thanks for the feedback! You wouldn't even think how valuable this posting of yours is to me; in fact, it just delivered an idea for my next survival challenge!

I've been working on a new concept for days now. I wanted to make a survival challenge where water should play a central role, but which should not play completely under water. I've got one nice other idea, but making a Tomb Turmoil- (or Jungle Drums-) styled survival challenge which is only half submerged, or in which the waterlevel changes dynamically, would be a great new challenge for me and could be fun to play!

As for the XP: Just saw your score! Nice, now I've got a score to beat! If you really don't want the XP, then I'd be happy to give it to the next scoreboard emperor

Yeah, I imagine it'd be quite tricky making a level like this where water goes up and down constantly.2010-01-11 07:45:00

Returning the favour

I played this and was a little bit confused at first but when I played it the second time I understood what you meant by random.

Some of the obstacles are really tricky but great at the same time.
I didn't manage to get to the other side and start to go to the other direction, at least for now.

Those golden bubbles really make you die easily if you try to hunt them too hard, but I think that's the point.

The visuals are great and I like how you managed to keep to the same style with every random obstacle.

Brilliant idea, I had also thought about randomizing obstacles but didn't go further than randomizing the position of some underwater missiles.

:star::star::star::star::star: + ♥ you really deserve it

Thanks for your great feedback!

Good point. It's clear for me that the dungeon is randomly generated, but other people who just play once and then quit might not even realize this. Might be why I've still got a 3-star rating.

I don't think anyone will EVER manage to get to the other side. In fact, the whole level takes place on one single screen. The fix camera is attached to a piece of dark matter, trust me. It's the whole level that moves, while sackboy stays completely still.

Those golden bubbles really make you die easily if you try to hunt them too hard, but I think that's the point.

You got it, that's the point Some of them are easier to get than others, but their main purpose lies in rising the competitive value for multiplayer sessions. The timer points are distributed equally, even after one player has died, so the only way to beat your fellow gadders is to collect more golden bubbles than them.

The visuals are great and I like how you managed to keep to the same style with every random obstacle.

Thanks! Sticking to one visual style throghout the whole challenge really was a main goal for me, and I think it came out quite well. Basically, there's stone, a bit of sand and underwater objects, and wood, always framed by that other type of wood (don't remember their names).

Brilliant idea, I had also thought about randomizing obstacles but didn't go further than randomizing the position of some underwater missiles.

Your survival is great as well! Please, listen to us and create another version (or update this one) with another element of danger. It'd be so worth it! Thanks for your great feedback again!

This level is right up my ally. I absolutely love every aspect of it. The whole idea is genius. The challenges are not too challenging, and the way you present it all, makes it all the more fun to play. I don't have any cons at all. Keep up the good work!!! 5 stars and hearted.2010-01-16 00:30:00

Thanks for the kind words!

As for the level itself, I've completely removed the spikes-in-a-cave section. I've also enhanced the randomizer. It's only a few tweaks, but I made some difficult or special elements appear a bit less often than others. Also, there actually is an easter egg element. You can even find a hint in the "level poster" in this thread. The chance of this special element appearing is pretty low, and it may only appear once per playthrough.

I love the random-effect in this level: Everytime i started the level it was different and there are really cool ideas in the level. The design is well made...
Anyway... i love this survival challenge and i hope that ill see some other levels from you soon.
