ManMade Forest: Trick or Die?!XOAcireXO
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/LilithSilverKrow/APhoto_1.jpgThe forest survives off of a ManMade Machine. Traps are set in place to keep people out of the Forest... Little Sackperson is there to investigate, to find out who is behind the making of this forest.
This place is Almost possessed, leaving sackboy just a tad bit scared along the way.. Floating platforms, Fire Caves, Toxic Gas Passages just to name a few! See if you can get through this level, one person only recommended for safe travel...

Hi there,

A couple of days ago I created the first level I'm actually quite proud of!
ManMade Forest: Trick or Die!?

It is a fairly short level, that could possibly have a continuation to it if people like it enough. I would love to get some feed back on it, and please let me know what I can do to make it better...

F4F and I'll feedback on as many levels as I can - lets do 20 for now, and I'll come back and do more!

Thank you so much in advance for testing out my level, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Hello there! Just played your level.

It had some good visuals, and there were some good platforming things going on.

There was a tricky bit over a gas pit, with extra bits of gas jumping up and down. This required quite a bit of effort, especially as it was quite dark down there, but no biggie!

Also, most of your bolts, switches and keys are visible. Of course, this is personal choice, but it may add a little realism if you were to make them invisible.

Other than that, no major problems. Well done!

(PS - Don't worry about F4F )

wow thank you I'll go and work on that today... The gas pit was my favorite part, because it took a little more concentration than usual to get through it, and it's absolutely possible to get through it... I feel like some people get a little discouraged trying to make it out of there.. lol2010-01-08 18:09:00

Great level. I like the visuals throughout and the game play was fun and engaging. There were some things you might want to improve (or keep in mind in future levels)

1. At the very start of the level you can see that there is nothing to your left. Not a huge deal, but you may want to add something (like trees) over there that way I doesn?t LOOK like that is the edge out your level. Or maybe just get rid of the very ?strait line?

2. That very first lever, the one that turns the big rotating block, the lever is too far from the block it turns. It took too long for me to figure out what that lever did because the block was out of my view. You should consider moving the lever closer to the block or use a camera tool to make both the block and the lever visible at the same time.

3. Here is the last one. The part where you grab the sponge balls that are on bolts is fun, but it is the only spot in your whole level where bolts are visible. Not only that, but you can see the big circles of dark matter that they are bolted to. Everything else in your level looked so good, that it really made that part of your level stand out in a bad way. It looked rushed/ half finished. Maybe attach the spongeballs to some trees and paint them to look like fruit? Or at the very least, make the dark matter smaller and out of way.

Everything else was great and fun but I would really consider working on those first two things I mentioned. First impressions are very important and the combination of that frustrating first lever, and the way you can see the edge of your level at the very start kinda leaves a bad taste in the players mouth, almost enough to get discouraged and quite. And that would be a shame because the rest of your level is great.

Oh, and the F4F thing, if you get the time, check out my "True Life" level. Click on "my creations" under my name and it is the only one there. Just like you, this is the first level I've made that i am proud of.

PacoSanchez88, and all those who have tested out my level Thank you and I've made the many changes that have been consistently annoying for everyone.. lol

1. The beginning part now begins with Sack boy "falling from a ladder" into the man made forest (got rid of the straight line that separated the player from the rest of the level)

2. The very first lever wasn't changed, because there is a trap there if you don't pull the lever and your Sackboy gets burned if he goes for the point bubbles first, but if he pulls the lever he is able to collect all of the point bubbles without any problems.

3. I fixed the little vehicle, but I haven't found a solution or a way to make the vehicle dissapear if Sackboy dies going over the fire area (vehicles will reapear if you happen to die, but for some reason I can't figure out how to make the original one disapear. Someone explained it to me and left my head itching...) If anyone knows how to explain how to do this once again, I'd be happy to learn how to do it.

4. The lighting was fixed, because I learned a lot of people were having trouble in the cave.. so now it's a tad bit brighter.

5. All of the switches, rods, bolts, pistons have been made invisible. Except for the ones in the cave over the gas pit. I really liked having the chains visible for those ones specifically... I'm not sure why but I think I'll keep them there.

6. The part where you hit the red button in the beginning to make a platform come from the sky has been fixed with a camera angle so you can see the little object spin which brings the platform down to level- you can now see without any hassles what the switch does!

7. All doors have been fixed, I was really frustrated with them, but someone told me how to fix it! So now they are fixed!

8. All dark matter is now invisible! lol I thought it looked pretty cool actually... but mums the word, and you guys said it was awful lol.

Thank you so much for playing, and if you want to check out the progress and hit me over the head if I've done something stupid with it let me know lol... I'm going to go and play some of you guys levels now.. Off I go!

checked it out again, very good improvements.

To get the vehicles to emit correctly, just set the "max emitted at once" number on the emitter to 1 (use the analog stick to decrease/increase in incriments of 1). This means that only one of the object will be out at a time, so if sackboy presses the button a second time, the vehicle further on will dissapear, and well be re emitted back where you started it.

checked it out again. much much better. the only problem left is your vehicle section. follow there instructions above and you should be golden. (on your emitter, set the "max emitted at one time" to "1". and have the settings on your button set to "One shot")

i understand why you dont wanna move that first lever but you could still use a camera tool so that you can see the lever and the block at the same time. otherwise, the player doesnt really know what that lever does since they can see the block spin.

oh well, you made some big improvments to an already good level. job well done.

That's a pretty good level there. I do like some of the platforming. The swinging part in the cave may be a bit difficult, but heck, it's unique in how it is made difficult, in that you need to remain perfectly still on the middle swing. I respect different approaches to platforming. The vehicle has an interesting sense of control to it, which provide nice feeling to the ride. The swinging parts of your level were the most fun. I would wish that there was a more consistent challenge. some parts were a bit slower than others. Visually speaking, the level was nicely highlighted with a nice jungle feel, and it had. At many points, it did feel 'alive', especially the vehicle. The variance of moving parts and pretty, decorative looking platforming was a big plus. The visuals tied in with the theme very well.

What I may suggest is more back story. You do tease us with ideas of what's going on in this forest, but I want to know more. It's a compelling concept, and with more in-level explanation of this forest (maybe even a sequel) this could be quite compelling story-wise.

In regards to the F4F I'd like if you could grab a friend or two (as opponent(s)) to try Happy Buddy Battle Show. The link is in my sig.

thanks

TheLawnStink- There is definately a huge backstory to why ManMade Forest was made. While I had a bunch of different ideas when first making it, I realized that my skills as a creator is still quite fresh. I decided to make the level as best I could with the skills I did have. The first level I made was absolutely weird, and really daft (according to players lol) It has some major problems with it too (which I intend to fix) The second one was a little bit better and has a really strange feel to it (this would include the funky dinosaur I made for a certain part) But nothing seemed to fit with what I was imagining.
Man Made Forest came from the idea of first remaking my very first level (Mission 1: survive the temple) but it didn't happen that way, I started really experimenting with the switches and layers and realized that I could make it way more realistic, leaving the initial idea to rebuild the first level behind.

So the idea is that ManMade Forest was created for a certain purpose, and in the following series you'll get to see why, this May or May not include a boss fight.

Since I am currently working on a contest level, It will be sometime before I can start working on all the other things that I have locked in my mind. One being a Temple of Isis, Another is Mists of Avalon, and then ManMade Forest Part 2.
I'm fairly sure I'll end up working on them all at once like I normally do, and the one that looks like it's doing the best visually and technically is the one I'll stick with. I am really excited to make a part 2 to ManMade Forest, but I'm going to have to hone into my skills as a creator a little bit more before I move on to the next step.

I'll play your level with my partner later this evening and I leave you some feedback! Thank you for playing my level!

Hiya

This is my feedback on your level-

gd: Like the description and plot - makes me want to play it!
gd - like the snake like design and use of all layers
bd - need camera on firstswitch to see what its changing
bd - spring was too powerful and send me all the way over
gd - like design on pillars
bd - i think your switches should be connected to perm switches and then set to direction. This 'on/off' system leaves me waiting a lot.
gd like the moving platforms and blockages and the style of cuts in the wood
bd - jumps in wood cave were tricky - we kept slipping off
bd/gd i think the grabbable/gas jumps are challenging and interesting... but perhaps too tricky. We got stuck here for a bit, but I didnt feel it was unfair.
bd - background in vehicle bit is very square. use corner edit tool on thin front layer to add jagged edges
gd - loved green whizzy wheels above gas
gd - creature at end was very scary and mysterious
bd - didnt understand end door.. just looked like a green line

A good start to the series with some interesting ideas. I would like to see you develop your logic and decoration skills to enhance your interesting gameplay.

for F4F please could you play 'in pursuit of the meddling magpie' - released sunday. Thanks in advance
