Little Gypsy Circus *SPOTLIGHTED*

Archive: 51 posts

Little Gypsy Circusdajdaj03
Enter the Gypsy Circus and meet its occupants!
But you better watch out, it's a little crazy in there..!

http://lbp.me/v/q035qv

My second real level, platforming mainly, short and simple (once again...)

I started it long time ago, and I really had a hard time finishing it :
struggling with thermo, lack of inspiration, and free times issues.
So I just decided to stop thinking too much, and to finish it whatever the final result... so here it is!

Anyway, on a more positive note, let's say that it's more like a visual level,
with colorful scenery and nice animated characters (hopefully),
in which I added some gameplay elements so that you don't get bored.

I hope you'll like it! Have fun!

A video (a little dark) made by JKThree, in a funny multi-players session.
(hum...seems like the level is not very friendly for 4 players )

The board itself was fantastic, it really gave the eerie circus theme with all the characters (personally i always thought circuses were creepy) and the music topped it all off. Yes, it was slightly short however u made the most out of it and it was still and enjoyable experience.

The only problem i ran into was the obstacle with the chickens hanging over it. it was kinda difficult to the point i had to restart the whole lvl.

all in all i enjoyed the lvl and hope this feedback helps for ur future stage all i ask in return is for ur feedback on my stage called "Invasion"

GOOD GOD YOUR LEVEL IS AMAZING.

You simply threw me down my chair. I just played it with Morgana and Joey and I'm nothing short of flabergasted. You visuals are simply amazing. Best animated characters i've seen so far. This even slaps Media Molecule best stuff. (at least visually)

We had a problem at some point though. There is a horse with a red box on his back and immediately after, there's a checkpoint. We didn't find how to reach that checkpoint. We jumped from the red box into huge wooden crate in the back layer and then "fell" in the next room. I wonder how we were supposed to activate that checkpoint...

Anyhow, I'll replay this tomorrow at some point in order to rate it in-game.

Gorgeous level. You don't need to say it's too short, the length is fine. I wouldn't have thought this level was only about visuals, the gameplay is really fun. I love how it's always a part of the environment. Swinging from horses is much more fun than swinging from spunges on strings. On the horse with the red box I tried swinging up to the wooden crates in the back to look for bubbles and then I tried yanking the box down before I held the horses head.

If you struggled with inspiration it doesn't show. Fantastic characters, both in design and animation. Beautiful lighting and sticker work throughout the whole level.

Definitely five stars and a heart. I gave you an author heart as well. I hand them out to everyone with less than 1000 who I want to see make more levels.

As I predicted, this level is amazing!!

Your stickerwork has been legendary since supersack market and once again you've proven yourself to be the king (imo).

The characters are well animated and look gorgeous, just as the rest of the level.

You bring yourself down by saying there isn't that much gameplay but I have to say I disagree!!
The platforming was a lot of fun and you used the surrounding enviroments really well.

Your style is brilliant, no doubt about it, extremely polished as with all you do and so close to Mm in terms of spirit.

5 stars and if I could, I would give you an equal amount of hearts for this.
Well done, dajdaj!!

Edit:
@rangerzero

You have to hang on to the horses' head for quite a while until he drops down the box.

Thanks so much guys!
You couldn't imagine how much I was stressed out with this level, I'm a little relevead now...

Thanks very much Ranger Zero!
You managed to jump on the red box while it was still on the horse back..??
And acess the next part from the back...? Oh, I guess I need to fix that!

As said Zwollie, you must grab the horse head, so that he bucks, shakes the box, then make it fall, and then you grab and pull the box to jump on it to the check point! Maybe I should do this more obvious...

The only problem i ran into was the obstacle with the chickens hanging over it. it was kinda difficult to the point i had to restart the whole lvl.

Oh sorry, I know this part is a little tricky, but not impossible.... Maybe I should put an infinite lives checkpoint there.
Does anyone else have problems to pass here?

Definitely five stars and a heart. I gave you an author heart as well. I hand them out to everyone with less than 1000 who I want to see make more levels.

Thanks Kipmolin! That's kind of you... I'm very far for having 1000 author hearts, it's true!

You bring yourself down by saying there isn't that much gameplay but I have to say I disagree!!
The platforming was a lot of fun and you used the surrounding enviroments really well.

Thanks very much Zwollie!
I know I'm a little pessimistic and not always sure of what I'm doing, but as the gameplay is not my strong point, I prefer warn people to don't expect something very original or complex...
But you're kind words make me feel better about it!

Some of the best characters I've seen. Nothing new in terms of gameplay but that's not a neccesity for a great level. I got nothing to pick on here. 5 stars and a heart.2010-01-03 17:23:00

I played through the first part - until you get to the first set of trampolines - and was impressed. It was "OK" ... I ended up dying there repeatedly and decided to try again ... this time I found the light switch - can't believe I missed it the first time ... holy crap! With the lights on, the level becomes jaw dropping impressive. The visuals and characters set the bar extremely high, and helped me realize how far I have to go on visuals.

The gameplay was fun - nothing spectacular, but enough challenge to keep you moving through the scenary (as if I would have needed an excuse).

Thanks Jaydetiger!

this time I found the light switch - can't believe I missed it the first time ... holy crap!

I was sure this will happen... but it's not your fault
I must make it more visible, or even block the way until the switch is activated...
Thanks for the feedback!

I loved this level! Your character design is outstanding and is without a doubt some of the best that I've seen in any level! The way they all animated was especially great. You did a great job there, a really, really great job.

I had no problems with the gameplay either, in fact, I thought some of the puzzles, while simple, were very charming! Getting the box off of the horses back, taking the ball from the bear... all simple, but great due to the animations of the characters.

Overall, a great level that put a smile on my face! Great job!

Loved the level, the characters were all beautifully made and the way the horses moved was really outstanding and realistic. The colored point bubbles were a simple but very effective touch, the lighting was also done very well but I think the level could use a few more lights.

I just played this again with my wife wanted to share some of her feedback. First, she also thought the level was fantastic, but she had trouble with the two areas involving the trampolines and spikes. The first wasn't too bad, but the second was extremely frustrating for her and when she let me give it a try, I too had a difficult time. I must have got lucky the first time, because I made it through on my first try, but this time, it took me several attempts. I'd suggest making the spikes lower or thinner.

Also, my wife felt that this area didn't really make sense in the circus theme and I guess I agree with her somewhat. She suggested making rings of fire that you have to jump through, which might be cool. Anyway, I think the section is fine, but I would suggest that you tweak the difficulty there a bit. I'd hate for someone to give up and not complete the entire level! It's too good not to!

Best level I've played so far overall this year. That's my opinion of course. You just nailed the concept / idea so well within the LBP universe. The colors are spot on. The only way to make it better would have to make it into a "when the gypsies fell" bomb drop level XD2010-01-04 07:29:00

Thanks Mr and Mrs Supercomputer
It's true, I also thought that this trampoline section (the second one) could be a little annoying,
as the "spring bouncing jumps" are not the easiest to master...
But in the same time, I thought it adds a little challenge, as the level is globally very easy...!

But you right, I will lower the spikes blocks!

The fire "circles" could be cool, it's true..!
I'll see what I can do if I have the courage to rework the section

Thanks very much for the feedback!

the lighting was also done very well but I think the level could use a few more lights.

Thanks for the nice comments!
More lights? I don't know if the thermo and the framerate will take it! I spend some time finding the right balance...
You find the level too dark? I hope you didn't miss the light switch at the entrance...

No, no. I did use the switch and thought the level's lighting was great. I just meant you should have added more lights for extra decoration.

A gorgeous, gorgeous level. The circus was so wonderfully realised. As with your supermarket level you succeeded brilliantly in creating a totally believable environment. Great use of stickers and materials and some lovely details and colours (I liked the hanging lights and the coloured score bubbles). But as everyone else has said, the superb characters and the way they?re animated so beautifully were the highlight.

Nice use of music and sound effects too. I particularly liked the ?ooohs? and ?aaahs? from the crowd in the trapeze section.

The gameplay was fun and I liked the way that most of it fitted the circus story so well. I agree with mrsupercomputer?s wife that some fiery hoops as an obstacle would be fantastic and would fit the theme better than the spikes but that would just be icing on the cake, really.

Thank you for such a vivid, atmospheric and fun level. 5 stars and a heart.

Fantastic level.
I usually don't like stickered materials, but you nailed it again.
Everything looks wonderful and behaves wonderful.
I appreciated that you carefully balanced the lights to avoid slowdowns since they would have ruined the pace of the level.
I also loved how you modified and melt some really basic platform concepts into your own personal stuff.
5 stars and heart.

Thanks guys! I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I fixed some details after some remarks :

- At the entrance, I blocked the way after the light switch, so that the player can only pass after activating this switch.

- The horse with the red box :
I put a more explicit bubble speech like "must find a way to make that red box fall", I blocked the way on the back layer
and I reduce the time for the box to fall... I think it will be clearer like that!

- I lowered the spikes on the second trampoline section,
but I will see this week-end If I can rework it, to put fire circles as suggested,
or should I say fire squares, as we can't make circle shapes on the "depth axe"...
Anyway, I will see how to do that the best way!

Thanks!

Very great level! I don't have as much feedback as I'd normally have, because it's an innovative, fun, brilliantly colorful, laid-back level. Again, great work!

All I have to say is the box on the horses back wasn't very detailed and the horse ride at the end wasn't very dramatic, like the horse bucking scene was. I think some camera shaking effects or riding over jumps would add a lot of impact.

But that's all! Genius level.

Hey dajdaj03, I played this level and I really enjoyed it. Very nice art style, it reminded me of Uncle Fritz's Fabulous Funhouse Frenzy which is another great level, this definitely had a lot more colour and liveliness to the whole thing though. I love levels that have a nice and happy atmosphere to them.

The gameplay was great, what was there of it anyway, I definitely think there should have been a bit more of it. The gameplay that was there was very fun and creative, I really enjoyed the horse sections and the part with the 3 guys with the fiery coals on unicycles.

I liked the fact that you added some secrets but I do think they could have been a bit more secretive.

The character design was outstanding you could not have improved on that at all, they all had a nice level of interaction to them also which I really liked.

Overall a really great level, I gave it 5 stars and a heart. I think the only part of the level that could have been improved on was the gameplay. Good job!

Brilliant level dajdaj.

The characters and animals are awesome, especially the horses. I've been trying to think of a way to make an animated horse for Sheriff Sack 2 but failed miserably. Yours are great.

The artwork is wonderful throughout and the game play for me is just perfect as it is and I see it as an added bonus.

Overall brilliant level. Oh I almost forgot, that's great use of the monster music too. It fits the theme really well.

Great work.

The horses are the main element of the level, I started to work on them before everything else,
so I spend some time finding the right shapes and good ways to animate them!
If you need some kind of help for the horses, just tell me... I would be happy to help in a way or another

and concerning the music, actually, it's this music that inspired the level and the theme.
The first time I heard it, when I bought the monster pack, I thought : oldschool circus/gypsies!
So there was no way of using another one!

Hey dajdaj,

A Gypsy Circus. You hit the nail right on the head...err...make that the stakes of the circus tent! What I really loved about the level was that it didn't strive to be realistic in the sense of reliving an actual life experience. Rather, the level embraced the crafty nature of LBP to recreate a feeling of moving through an antique set that narrates a story with marionettes. When I was playing through the level, I just couldn't help but picture some of the characters and horses being manipulated with strings and imaginary velvet curtains framing the scenes as if it were some puppetry show. This totally captures a highly specific historical moment in such a clever perspective. Maybe I'm not making any sense, but I just wanted to let you know that your interpretation of the theme was so accurate that I can't help but tie it to antique Parisian artifacts like those from the movies Moulin Rouge! or that monkey with a cymbal from Bruce Weber's Phantom of the Opera.

But I digress. Dajdaj, you sell yourself too short. True, the gameplay wasn't particularly impressive, but the setting more than made up for it. That said, this is anything but short and simple: this is a level to be reckoned with and deserves an award for artistic direction if there ever was an Oscars for LBP (Oh wait, the Sackies!). The forms, colors, and lighting were all unbelievably crisp and clean. I really enjoyed your horses; I think they were the most naturally behaving animals I have encountered thus far on LBP.

:star::star::star::star::star:, level heart, and I hearted you since SuperSack Market!

Hiya

gd: love the music and caravans - very peaceful. for some reason really reminds me of monkey island 1. I think its the nighttime feel and guy with wonky eye
gd: horse is fantastic - both in terms of movement and looks
gd: the tent looks amazing. the way you shaped it, looks like material rather than solid.
bd: it's all been very dark so far.. but im expecting this may change any second.
gd:..ah yes..
bd: really weird part with a yellow platform and orange ball. I ended up behind the yellow layer stuck. The only way i found out was to find the source of the light and jump up and out. weird.
gd: nice platforming section with spikes. colour fits the circus and works well.
...did that horse just s*** a brick?
bd: i got stuck AGAIN. I jumped on one of the fire jugglers and landed behind the yellow barrier at the back.

unfortunately I had to quit there as there was no way out.
I love the visuals and there was some good platforming there. I got past the fire jugglers once (although it was tricky) and I would have liked a checkpoint there. I feel this level needed a bit more testing for 'holes' as I got stuck twice on one playthrough.

Your ability to create visuals and atmosphere is outstanding though. I will definately check out more of your work.

please could you F4F my level 'in pursuit of the meddling magpie' (released sunday)

thanks, adi

So colorful! So detailed! So FUN!
This is an awesome level, very detailed, great colors choice, amazing NPCs, and maybe the best horses i've ever seen! A great mix of visuals, atmosphere and gameplay, in the best circus of LBP! Loved the style, and I think you spent time making the characters, cause they're all really good, funny and detailed. Loved the trampolines, the animals, the music... Maybe all! Short and funny, I had a great time playing this!
Congratulations, this is an amazing level!
5 :star: and heart!
If you do F4F, try the level in my sign, it has the link for the thread

I love lbc because every single day somebody raises the bar up. you did it today. INCREDIBLE

how much time did you spent on it?

Why it is rated only 4 stars? well, nothing matter, all the best level are rated 4 stars.

Wow, what a great level ! Everything's so neat, I especially liked the way every character moves, it seems so natural, it's been so long since I had seen such a level. Well obstacles and puzzles are quite simple, but each mechanism is very clever and the character design is stunning ! Yet again, the way the characters move was, wow ! :hero:

Oh, and the little boy at the end blew me away, he looked-like a real boy, with the hat, and the way he swung his leg. He kinda reminded me of Oliver Twist

What's more, it's the first level that, according to me, uses judiciously the standard floor of the map (maybe thanks to the transition through the big top, it looks very natural )

Anyway, 5 stars + heart + Artistic .

Thanks very much for all the last nice comments!
I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

I'm stopping F4F on this one now,
I think I made feedbacks for all the people, with a recent level, who left a comment here till now.
If I forgot someone, please let me know and tell me which level

But that doesn't mean I will not play or comment levels if asked,
it's just no more "official", as time for this is not always easy to find

Thanks again!

Ah, this was brilliant! Like a black comedy! Loved the dark atmostphere and grotesque characters, especially those freaks dangling the fiery marionettes. The caravans looked very authentic and the horses looked fantastic, but it was their animation that really brought 'em to life, and I thought you integrated these thoughtfully into the gameplay rather than just placing 'em there for eye-candy. A highly original level all around, largely down to the fact that you built almost everything from scratch and put a lot of effort into custom stickering instead of taking the easy road and using MM pre-mades. The trampoline section annoyed me a little, as I've found this to be a frustrating gameplay mechanic since playing the original MM story levels, but that's just a matter of personal taste and didn't really detract from the fun of the level as a whole. In the end it was the moody visuals, original theme and beautifully constructed, intelligently chorographed set pieces like the dancing bear and bucking horse that really made this level stand out.

5-stars, a "brilliant" tag and hearted.

Thanks very much Ungreth! That's kind of you!
I also read your in-game comment on the super market level yesterday, so I'm glad you enjoyed both!

Yeah, I know, it's not the easiest LBP mechanic to control, but I like bouncing on those trampolines
But maybe I played/tested the level so many times, that it became very easy for me to pass this 2 sections...

I just hope that it's not the main reason why some people didn't complete the level

I finally played this last night - as others have said, this is some of the best animation I've seen. The horses were brilliant, and in general you have a great visual AND gameplay style. The trampolines weren't my cup of tea, however they were forgiving enough that I didn't mind them. LOVED being thrown up by the horses as well as the trapeze section.

Great job! 5 stars and a heart.
