What Is So Good About Fallout3

Archive: 17 posts

Well I rented Fallout 3 and i played it for a good 2 hours and i find nothing fun about it at all. Its not that it is boring i just dont find it fun. I know A LOT of people really love this game but i just dont see it.

Can someone explain to me what people like about this, ( I would take Oblivion over this any DAY!)

It's basically oblivion with guns.
No really. It just got a slow start, all fallout games start out slow (killing rats in 2. Eeeughhh..).

There's no instant fast travel like in Oblivion, so you have to find each area you want to FT to.

It's the type of game people will really love or hate. I have the game and eventually you would grow into it. You get better and better eventually until you can be the life out of ANY wasteland critter out there. It's a matter of patience.2010-01-03 06:14:00

You mean the school? The school is pretty lame. Also try some other gun other than a shotgun. I like the guns that cause moar gore better, such as rifles.
But yeah it's very much a love or hate thing. I didn't think very highly of it at first, but it's an allright fallout game.

But it's fine not liking it, it has flaws and repetitive enviroments. Boring dungeon crawls (haet subways!) and the weaponry isn't a varied as oblivions, with whatnot all the enchanting and such.

There's a Perk called Bloody Mess and every time you get a critical and kill the enemy they splatter gore everywhere!2010-01-03 06:18:00

I don't like it much either :/
Just thought it depressing if anything, and the dodgy ps3 graphics gave me a headache.

It did get a lot better once i started using a hdmi cable but it didn't draw me in for long, at most i got an hour or 2 out of it

I've seen it played at a friend's house, and from what I saw, I don't see how it can be superior to Oblivion. Then again, I'm always in the mood for an epic fantasy adventure and rarely in the mood for a post-apocalyptic FPS, so... Yeah.2010-01-03 16:42:00

Well gee. I booted up my FO3 on my computer.
I forgot how much of a trainwreck it actually is.

I mean yeah sure, modding's fine and all that. But uh... it gets silly when you're able to summon disco balls (and your PC doesn't exactly look... very good.)

Also it seems I increased the gore. A whole lot.
I'ma get it back to vanilla state and pour some hours into it later.

Also about Snrm's decision: Yeah, I often return to oblivion/morrowind, but FO3 is rather rare. I'd honestly, as unbiased as possible, give the game 6 out of 10.

Well I liked the game the first few days but later I got tired of the post apocalyptic environment. I think that I like medieval fantasy stuff better and yes, I would play Oblivion over Fallout3 without even think about it, but I'm an Oblivion fan so....

Anyway I think is just depends of what the person likes. I don't like it too much, I give it a 7.5/10 but again, this is just my opinion

Fallout 3 is cleverly handled due to the wasteland and the ambiguity of the moral choices that have areas of grey, rather than the atypical good/bad. The dungeon crawling and combat are far from the games strongest points. However, I would say it is a little early to exact judgment upon it when you are only two hours in. I hated Oblivion yet loved Fallout3, both seem to be very divisive games.2010-01-05 20:39:00

I'm really surprised at how few Fallout 3 fanatics are here trying to hold down the fort for this game!

I LOVE Fallout 3. It's one game I've actually picked up and played through - mostly at least - a second time. I love it. Granted, if you're totally uninterested in exploring a world blasted by Nuclear apocalypse, it may never be your thing.

but here's the catch - it's not just a blasted world. It's an INTERESTING fantasy of the post apocalypse. The world envisioned here is not the world we know, but the world of the future people imagined back in the Eisenhower era. The new suburbia, kitchen appliances and vacuum cleaners, front yards and white picket fences with rose gardens. Advertisements, corporations, cola bottles and breakfast cereal. Tvs still looked kind of like radios. This was the age of the Nuclear Family. And they imagined a sci-fi future hilarious and wonderful to behold.

So Fallout 3 is the future imagined by that world. hovering cars look like our own 50s models, and people still go to drive-in movies. The twist is that the world has been annihilated by nuclear war. The concept of the vaults, where remnants of the old days live in safety in huge underground vaults beneath the earth, is wonderful. The unimaginable atrocities that have taken hold of the world outside make their bored ignorance even better. these "boring" vault scenes early on were exciting to me because of the context of where I was - safe and sound in a vault underground. you know what lies in wait, because you bought "Fallout 3". These safe, mundane, blissfully normal early scenes make the emergence into the wasteland all the more fantastic.

The world of Fallout holds so many incredible images that all tell the story of the world, and it's always a blast for me to go in and explore some more. I wish you could use the still cameras in game and snap photos. Not long ago I was playing and I was totally struck by this one area - It was a small cesspool, the "pond" of the blasted land. Toxic waste barrels were floating and lodged into the mud. on the shore, a "brahmin" - a wretched, mutated 2-headed cow, was drinking from the pool of sludge. This image tells the story of Fallout. It's not just the post-apocalypse - it's a wonderful cartoon fantasy of the post apocalypse.

Every nook and corner of this game holds another surprise, and the world is so fantastically imagined. And NOBODY who plays this forgets the first time they see a Deathclaw. It usually goes something like this - you see it from a distance, probably at night, and you say to yourself "WHAT THE **** WAS THAT????"

Someone mentioned the moral grey areas of the game - that's another thing that holds a lot of recurring interest. The choices you have to make in the quests in this game are usually never black and white. Doing the "right thing" may mean violently massacring people. If you think you've done the right thing, it may prove to have horrific repercussions. Your karma will still be positive because your intentions were right, but in the wasteland, "good" doesn't truthfully exist anymore. Wherever people kept their "good", it seems it too was ruined by the bombs.

I think it's more the presentation that ruined it for me, and in a few places it seems to of chosen realism over fun.

For example they take the whole scavengy thing a bit too far. Sure it adds to the atmosphere.. but i want to be able to afford ammo. I don't want to have to shoot as carefully as i can and still have to go melee after 3 enemies. And when you do gather a lot of stuff to sell the shop keeper never has enough money to give to you.

The game overall seems horribly unpolished. Even with hdmi the graphics were still ruining the immersion every second of the way.
And on top of that i never thought there was enough variety in the environments, there are a few cool landmarks but in the end it's all just a big brown and grey blur.

I think it had potential is all :/

Fallout 3 is sooooo good, because you can explore and level up just like Borderlands. Which is very addictive. And Bethesda already released about four add-ons for it.

If you are planning to buy it, then go to Gamestop and buy Game of the year edition. Which includes all of the current add-ons.
