The Icarus Space Station: Sector 4Warwager

"Travel through the famous Icarus Space Station to solve the severe energy core problem that the crew has been having."

[Note: This level is intended for single-player]
all

This level is meant to be Part 1 of a 3-Part series on a Space-Station/Futuristic type of story I'm making.

I've been working on this level for about a week and a half, and it's only my 2nd level, but I gotta admit, I think I'm gettin good at this

The Level Start; The Space Station has a nice, slick feel to it.

The DNA Machine; Took me a while to get it figured out with all the logic and such.

One of the courses you have to pass through to open a door etc.

One of the many Communication Panels you'll come across which will help you through your journey.

The Space Station's shut-down led to glitchy security bots, thus you'll have to get rid of them to get any further!

Sector 4's Main Energy Core.

I feel this level is underrated, and I put in a lot of work, too. So please, any feedback and criticism is highly appreciated =D

Happy New Year's!

The intro thing kept squishing me for some reason. Seems the sensors don't have enough reach or something, so jumping causes the red "doors" to close on me. I also somehow got stuck in the DNA chamber (the elevator wouldn't go back up, and the doors closed and locked me in). Not entirely sure what caused that one. Probably my fault for not doing things exactly as instructed. There were a few times where some of the doors (also the one near the scientist didn't work right, and didn't let me through).

Everything was fine until the point where you need to get this main generator online. The turret thing (while a rather cool idea) is way too hard to dodge (it could at least use an infinite life checkpoint). Might wanna consider making it's movement much slower.

I think the level looks nice, and basically everything else was great, but these issues kinda ruin it. I had to restart many times just to get to the main part of the level.

It could use some work, but I think it could be a great level.

Thank you SO much for the feedback, I was really waiting for any kind of feedback, and the wait is over

I'll get to work as soon as I can (I've got my finals coming up and trust me, I won't be able to touch LBP for a looong time )

But yeah, a lot of the "events" such as the doors/DNA machine need to be performed carefully for them to work.

I played it over loads of times, and many times when I was playing with others, the glitches would appear over and over again, probably because multiple people caused the DNA machine to stop working.

And yeah, I've really got to fix the intro, because sometimes the doors frustrate me too. And for the DNA machine, you prolly moved around a bit, lol. I'll have to warn people a bit harder this time (I did make a bubble warning people not to move, for it would cause DNA glitching, but I guess it's too vague of a warning, I'll make one in the very beginning)

And as for the 2nd turret, yeah it's a lil tough, I think I kinda sped too fast on that one, and I need to re-do that part. The trick is to follow its pattern and to jump in between layers to avoid its plasma balls and such.

The ending is pretty neat though, seeing the Energy Core go back online. I'll just have to fix those parts.

Thanks very much for the feedback, I appreciate it tons, And hopefully those problems will get fixed soon =D

If there is one word for your level it's glitchy, My god, I had to restart numerous times in order to get past the first door.

First off, I had alot of trouble with the authorization sequence at the beginning, It kept crushing me. After i survived that mess, I went down to the DNA machine, it worked fine at first, but the elevator didn't work. I went right again to see if I missed something. I go back into the DNA machine, and it closes on me, I can't get out, I have to restart. After going through everything over again the level tells me that a door has been unlocked, however it hasn't opened. I assumed that it was set to a motion switch, it wasn't, i had to restart again. That was my experience, in what was supposed to be the first minute, it took me at least 10.

I can tell your level is meant to be incredibly cinematic, and that's fine, but make sure it all works. Your logic seems to be very complex, which I can appreciate and understand if one or two things don't go exactly correct, but that was ridiculous, I don't think it should have been so bad that had to restart three times in the opening sequence.

Granted however, after the first room, i had very few problems in terms of getting stuck and dying, nothing that made me restart.

The bosses were fun to play, as well as difficult, (you used some great motion tracking on the second one), and was probably the most fun part of the entire level. Those are all of my opening comments, I think I'll get more specific

Visuals: I always like VR materials and this time was no exception, I feel that they were used in good amount, I wasn't very fond of the large amount of Black Rubber it looked pretty ugly compared to the rest of the level

Gameplay: It took me a long time to actually get into some gameplay. After the opening sequence, which you read about above, I felt like I was walking for days until I reached something i had to do ( I enjoy playing the game not watching it.) The bosses were fun, and some of the complex logic really showed in some of the puzzles

Overall I think this level could have used a lot of fine tuning alot of the glitches could have been flattened out if you tested it a bit more, maybe getting somebody other than yourself to test it too. I also think that you should have used something other than black rubber for one of your major materials, I didn't really like the look of it all that much.

Rating: :star::star:
Your getting there though, you have alot of potential as a creator. I think you could make some really cool levels

Also, when you get a chance please provide feedback for my level "+x~Virus~x+"- the URL is in my signature

@ optimafrogg

Thanks very much for the feedback, it helps a lot to fix the glitches and tells me what I need to work on over-all

Yeah, the beginning is really the biggest problem I have now. It's also probably why people are playing my level and not completing it afterwards; I didn't know it'd be THAT glitchy, probably because it was me testing the level the whole time.

I think it's because of the timing logic I used; The way i set it up was exactly as you said; as a cinematic type of thing in the beginning. To follow along, the player can't really jump and fidget around, and has to read all the bubbles as such. Doing this, I didn't see any glitches myself, so I'll have to look at the logic again to find out how to deal with the timing and such. I'll have to tell players directly on how to follow along; I think I went TOO much into the whole story/Sector kinda thing, and less on what to DO.

I'll hopefully fix all these probs before moving on to Sector 5 itself!

Yeah, I think I used too much black rubber, and then I got accustomed to using different spacey/VR materials, I'm going to try to fit that in somewhere as well, and I'll also follow your advice and try to put in some extra things in between the battles and the cinematics.

I think I rushed it a bit too much, kind of like my first level, but the thing I love about LBP, is that it's a learning expierance, you gotta love it

Hopefully I'll get someone else to play it for me, and the feedback extremely helps, thanks

I'm gonna go play your level now, and try to give as much help as possible =]

UPDATE:

I've done some work with the time I had, and I fixed most of the glitches that players were experiencing in the very beginning of the game, which probably also threw everyone's moodset off about the level

But other than that, I made the timed obstacle course at the end a bit more easy and simplistic, but it's still quite a bit of a challenge. I'm going to be adding a neat introduction scene using Letters and explosions, oh, it's gonna be fun

Check in and see what you think, I'm also going to be adding more to the ending, as I think I rushed a bit finishing this level up to see the feedback. Hopefully I get all this done and perfect the level, so I can move onto Sector 5 with all the ideas I have
