How NOT to create a level (aka Taffey's list of community level pet peeves)

Archive: 107 posts

jackofcourse has impressed me with his excellent Guide and Tips to Creating on PSP (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=20588), so I felt inspired to create an anti-guide of sorts.

I have played hundreds of community levels so far. Many of them are good, some of them are great, and a vast army of levels are absolutely terrible. Many of these dismally inadequate works of creative inability share the same characteristics, and I thought it would be fun to list them out here. Surprisingly, many of these awful attributes are unique to the PSP, but there's still plenty of oldies and goodies that can be found on PS3 user-created levels.

Just for fun, I'd like to consider this guide an encyclopedia of all the icky things we've all seen over and over on the Community Moon. Have you found something that annoys you that's not on this list? Post it here and I'll update my thread. With luck, perhaps an aspiring creator or two will stumble across this post and spare us all a little bit of pain before publishing their masterwork 5 minute creation.

Without further ado, and in no particular order, I present you my (slightly sarcastic) guide on how NOT to create a level:

Grid-painted stairs: Select a material, select a brush shape, and hey there's a grid. Wow, it creates some great-looking stairs!! The chore of running down miles and miles of fabulous stairs is almost as fun as jumping up them. What a great workout for the thumbs.

Don't name your level: Regardless of what language it's in, nothing says "play me!" like a work of art named "Unnamed Level". Be sure to also leave the default Cambridge Studios level icon in place as it helps distinguish your creation from everyone else's.

Unglued jetpack: Let's be honest for a moment. Nobody really enjoys that whole "gameplay" thing, so what better way to bore the ears off of someone than to give them a free ride through your level with a loose jetpack? They can avoid all your carefully crafted obstacles and see parts of the level they were never intended to see. It's extra annoying if you make the tether really long - that way you can't see what it's snagging off-screen.

Off-center wheels: Why place a motor bolt in the uninteresting dead center of a wheel when you can create exciting, random physics by placing it off-center? Rocket cars are that much better when they remind you of broken shopping carts.

Huge piles of score bubbles: LBP is all about reaching multi-million point scores, which is why we all like diving into giant buckets full of bubbles for no reason. It's so fun to watch your multiplier flip from 100x back around to 2x, you'll hardly notice the unbelievable slowdown caused by 500 loose score bubbles on screen all at the same time.

Rocket powered camels:Ah, the PSP equivalent of the rocket-powered cheetah. It's such a cool game-provided item that I'm sure nobody else in the world has thought of adding it to their levels. Go ahead, use it. You know you want to.

Rocket powered red sports cars: See #6.

Glokenpop: OMG, teh song i have nevar heard befor! Do as the lyrics suggest and let us hear it over and over and over and over again.

Unseen high-speed impact explosive emitters: The easiest kinds of obstacles to dodge are the ones you never see. To guarantee death and the inability of a player to complete your level, hook them up to proximity switches.

Race gates that you overshoot: Finishing races gets boring after a while, so help players avoid this drudgery by making sure they fly right past the finish line. Rocket powered anythings are a great way to ensure this. Not only will a missed finish marker negate any race score earned, but it also helps lend a sense of pointlessness to the whole experience.

Scorpions: Ah, the game-provided scorpion creature. They are beyond entertaining in swarms of 100 or more. It's best to advertise them in the title of your level, and you'll get extra plays and hearts if you spell it "scorpians".

Use only the back layer: Everything gets easier with this fantastic trick. If you don't feel like playing, just jump forward a layer and walk out of the level! Yay! [Arrestor]

Don't test anything: The element of surprise isn't just for players, it's for creators too. There's just nothing quite as thrilling as play testing your level for the first time after it's been published. Will it break? Probably. How exciting!! [Arrestor]

Sponge lifts that get stuck: People love restarting for silly reasons, and nothing is sillier than a one-way sponge lift. D?j? vu is a wonderful feeling and increases replay value, because people love restarting for silly reasons. Oh! D?j? vu! [Beed28]

Lack of magic mouths: Story? Screw the story! Your players come here for game play, not fancy words, so don't bother to explain anything. Players can read minds, so I'm sure they won't need to waste 5 hours figuring out how to solve your random puzzle. [Beed28]

Empty levels: Just don't bother putting anything in your level and leave it empty. Ah, the artistic purity of a clean canvas. Tell players that you made a stealth bomber, and they will spend hours looking around for it. [Doopz479]

Copy someone else's level: Nobody will guess that you didn't create Super Sackball! all by yourself. It's extra fun if you put a bunch of fart sounds in the level and break the mechanics before republishing. [napero7]

Advertise anti-H4H: Well played! In a game that no longer has a reason for hearts other than their own merit, it's best to discourage people from leaving comments that request H4H. Now, if only they could leave any kind of comments at all, you'd be in business. [Darth J464]

Checkpoints miles away from several hard obstacles: You took time working on that obstacle to make it extra difficult, so stick the nearest checkpoint as far away from it as possible. Repeatedly suffering the same death at the same spot is extremely relaxing. [Coxy224]

Fill template levels with random premade objects: This technique takes skill, but it's well worth the effort. It's best to electrify everything in sight to make sure the level is impossible to complete. [napero7]

The creator advantage: Don't you hate it when other pesky players beat *your* high score on *your* level? Just add a hidden emitter with tons of score bubbles that only you know how to activate, and you'll be the king of your own little world forever. [KernelM]

Endless corridors: Nothing says fun more than running down a corridor for half an hour! Be sure not to put anything remotely interesting along the way or else your players might actually stay awake by the time they get to the end. For added annoyance, combine this with #19 and make sure the last checkpoint is waaaaaaaaay back at the beginning of the marathon. [Fastbro]

Hoardes of enemies that gang up on you: Everybody loves popping brains, so make sure your emitted creatures never stop coming. Force your players to flawlessly execute dozens of your uber-tough creatures in order to reach the end of a section, only to be killed within sight of the next checkpoint. It's best if your creatures pile up on each other to make the experience that much more horrible. I mean enjoyable. [Domik12]

LLLLLLAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGG: Things that happen in real time are boring. Ttttthhhhheeeeyyyyy aaaarrrrrreeee mmmuuuucccchhhh bbbbeeetttteeerrrrr wwwwiiiiiittttthhhhhh llllloooootttttssss oooofffff llllaaaaggggggg. To ensure your level plays like that last sentence reads, spawn a swarm of loose objects somewhere in your level. Lag: It's the gift that keeps on giving.

abbrev spch bubls: typng things out al th way is hard so don do it. ppl wll b able 2 figur out wut u mean anywy. an don use captl letrs thyre dum. [theswweet]

Unappealing level description: Nothing makes me want to play a level more than a description that says "My first crappy level and some other stuff I made on the bus today." There's just no reason to make your level sound appealing, because everyone will know how awesome it is after they play it. You'll get even more plays if you include "FREE PRIZES!!!!1!!" somewhere in the description as well. [Rogar]

Corner editor? What's that?: Complicated shapes can hurt your eyes, so just make everything out of right angles and universally appealing little squares. Congratulations, you're the mayor of Block Town! Be there and be square. [CyberSora]

Spare me the details: Oh, so you've got a level that's all nifty and has complicated stuff in it? It's just because you want to show off to your friends. Who needs "quality" (whatever that is) or stuff that actually works? Just make a cardboard block, add a rocket, and now it's a Super Space Sled. That will wow the crowd. [CyberSora]

Art is soooo yesterday: Art is for losers. It's easier to see when everything is the same color, so just choose one sticker and use it on everything. Nobody really likes scenery anyway. Besides, it's like hard to do and stuff and I don't feel like trying. [CyberSora]

Ambiguous Icon: You've decided to take the plunge and actually select a level icon, so why not make things as confusing as possible? Your level is about robots from outer space, so use something abstract and nonsensical like alphabet sticker "N". It could stand for "nice", "neat", or "no idea". Most likely though, it will mean "never played". [BlueBulletBill]

Don't glue down switches: Everyone loves accidentally shoving a switch off a ledge. Who cares? It probably didn't open a door to the next part of the level anyway. When you see your 1-star rating, remember: It's opposite day! [PaddyJ]

Don't glue down checkpoints either: Nothing is nicer than an unglued checkpoint that just so happens to roll off a ledge and into a nearby hazard. Wee, endless deaths! It's ok, all checkpoints in LBP PSP are infinite, so you'll be fine. Just try to ignore the fact that by the time you get done reading this you will have died 17 times. [Arradi]

No scoreboards: You know what's wrong with scoreboards? Players leave when they reach them. No, don't leave me! I want you to stay FOREVER!! Make your level scoreboard-free and soon you'll have your own little colony of permanent residents desperately searching for a way out. The fun will never end! [CyberSora]

Checkpoints over lethal materials: You know what's better than dying? NEVER-ENDING RECURSIVE LOOPS OF DEATH!!! Simply place a checkpoint over a pit of gas, and if the player is silly enough to activate it they'll die over and over again. Fun, fun, fun! Fastbro

Use sponge for everything: Ah, sponge. You can stand on it, grab it, drag it, swing from it... maybe even eat it. It's the most universally awesome material in the game, so use it for everything! Nothing beats basking in a sea of splotchy yellow goodness. flamingemu

To Sony: A great idea!: There's no better way to communicate your deepest desires to a large corporation than by publishing it in a LittleBigPlanet level. First, make sure your PSN is boldly displayed on a large chunk of basic wood. Next you need to add a magic mouth that explains your awesome water/paintinator/lighting idea, and don't use punctuation! Periods and commas only serve to confuse video game executives, so leave them out. End your request with "plz plz plzzzzzzzzz!!!11!", make your level copyable, and before you know it your dream will become a reality! Maybe. CyberSora

no 4 is unfair. You CANT center wheels automatically like ps3. And if you try REALLY hard to get it in the middle, it's usually still off center2010-01-02 22:59:00

I'm referring to motor bolts that have 20% of the wheel to one side of them and 80% of the wheel on the other side. I've even seen a few instances where the bolts were located directly on the edges of the wheels.2010-01-03 01:50:00

Well, I think you did indeed have the very, very first community level that ever featured that song. That definitely means everyone else copied you!

Oh, and I added #11 to the list as well.

12. Only use one Layer: Everything gets easier with this fantastic trick. besides that everyone can see your roxxor mechanics (or just walks out of the level)!
13. Do not test anything: This adds a massive amount of suprises to your level (even for yourselve)

15. Lack of Magic Mouths: Story? Screw the story! Your players will come here for game play, so do not explain anything to players. They will then need to waste 5 hours figuring out how to solve this puzzle.

I meet several times in community levels such sad thing:

somewhere in level there is emitter, that do unlimited number of enemies , that you can kill. That enemies just after its appearing go to you side. And when you come to them there is a long line of enemies. Problem is that after you kill one, two or three enemies there is some enemies in front of you and you will die with its help. So you must kill big number of enemies without single mistake in you moves, if you do mistake - you must start the battle with long line of enemies from the beginning. Yes, in some case there is checkpoint not far from this place, but its only save you time between unsuccessful unlimited tries of win this battle. Yes, maybe you can go through such place after defeating ten or twenty enemies, but how many tries you do before it? And will be you so patient or just turn off such level?

Thanks for the suggestions. There are a couple on here that I've broken to a very minor degree. (I used ONE scorpion and maybe 3 square high grid staircase, but those shouldn't be too annoying.)

I also have a question, should it be acceptable for me to have a lack of magic mouths if It makes sense that nothing talks, and I find other ways of implementing story and puzzle hints such as a short story explanation in the description and visual cues?

I also have a question, should it be acceptable for me to have a lack of magic mouths if It makes sense that nothing talks, and I find other ways of implementing story and puzzle hints such as a short story explanation in the description and visual cues?Absolutely fine. Magic mouths are totally optional, and if you don't need 'em then don't use 'em! Some people may say that they want more of a story or a purpose, and if that's what your level needs then yes, use them. On the other hand, other forms of hints and directions can be quite elegant if done right,

Look at jackofcourse's levels - he uses zero (or very few) magic mouths in his creations and they're totally awesome.

Be careful with information in the description. I always read them to see if the level appeals to me, but many people won't. So make sure there are enough clues in the level itself.

I agree with Taffey, it's fine if you don't have any magic mouths. In fact, I think if you can tell a story or explain a puzzle without any, all the better. As they say: show, don't tell.

(I learned 27 the hard way. "Moon Meteor Madness" anyone? )

27. Don't Use The Corner Editor: Why use that silly little thing, when you can be the creme of the crop in "Block Town"! Nothing appeals to a player more than dull block shaped circles. Hey, you can even be mayor in "Block Town 2: Circle or Square?".

28. Spare Me The Details: Who needs those show-off sceneries, or those "quality" contraptions? Why not make a simple make a cardboard block, add a rocket and call it your cardboard box mobile? That will wow the crowd.

29. Art Is Soooo Yesterday: Seriously, art is for losers. Who needs stickers when you can just wing it and make "Boring Ville" the life of the party. Hey, for even more fun, why not make EVERYTHING the same color? Your fans will love the uniqueness of each object.

Hope this helps the community.

30. Abbreviate It!
Why bother looking for a sticker that will tell us anything about what you've made? Just use those handy letter stickers! They can stand for anything! Use N for nice, neat, or in most cases, never played!

When you see your 1-star ratings, remember, It's opposite day!LOL - That's perfect! I should have thought of that one a long time ago.

well this maybe kinda strange but these are all the things i try to avoid putting in my created level because i know how ******* annoying they ******* are!!!!!!!
i might just start doing these things just to annoy people (especially no. 31) !!! there is no bigger frustation than jumping and running round a 1 hour level trying to find a switch that opens a door 4 millon levels above your current position and you knock it off screen then the slow relization that because of this action you are never going to finish the stupid ****** level anyway....

i might just sart NOT gluing swithches to floors or buttons - that rminds me of something else - people dont glue down buttons on rocket cars and put the boost up too much so when you step on the button the button whizzes off so you have to get of the jet car walk a million miles and step on the button when the linked jet car is ages away which is quite funny

so, yes number 31 is gonna be out on my brand new levels very shortly MMMMWWWWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOL

Don't forget:
Not gluing checkpoints down:
Nothing is nicer than an unglued checkpoint that just accidentally falls off to a nearby hazard. Wee, Endless deaths! Especially since in the PSP version all checkpoints are infinite-life

I laughed a lot, great fun to read! I haven't come across a lot of thim during my happy gadding but I'll be sure to exclude them from my own levels. Good work!

I found this new one, mainly because some noob did it.

#32. No Scoreboards - Who needs a scoreboard? We already know you're the best. How about you make your level without adding a scoreboard, that way the fun will never end!

Place a switch right next to the thing it activates. Who needs to glue a platform to the wall and add a swing to get up there? Just have the switch that opens your door right beside the door! It's realistic, and easier than actually doing something to advance through the level! If anyone suggests just having the door open, or not there, tell them that that's removing the "gameplay".

Darkness: Who doesn't love an adventure through King Tuts temple or a pirates cave. Just remember to bring your own flashlight because the creator has made it sooo dark that you can't see the swing over the flaming pit or that enemy who keeps poking you in your sack behind. Not to mention the switch to open the door to the next room. But hey, that realism for you! It just doesn't make for a fun level when you can't see anything 2 steps in front of you....2010-03-28 22:55:00

I think he means a lack of puzzles; as in instead of working to open a door, there's simply a switch right next to it that opens it.

Many people have switches to doors with no puzzles to unlock them. Not really a peeve to be honest.

True, but it's still uninteresting and unoriginal. They could make their level actually have something to it. Most press-a-switch-open-a-door levels I've seen at least make it a little more complex--the switch isn't right next to the door, or you need to do something to get to the switch.2010-03-29 02:23:00

Oops, I have done a couple of those things... but a few that are less annoying.

Anywho, I've got one.
Don't you just love it when you have challenges and puzzles you don't need to do? Who wants a challenging level, when you can just run through all the obstacles without having to do any of them?

Another one just came to mind...

Placing checkpoints over lethal materials: Don't you love dying in a level over and over again? So why not place a checkpoint over a pit of gas? That way, if someone activates it they'll have to start over again! Fun, fun, fun!

that is soooooooo annoying!!! sorry to be so negative but do you actually know howmany community levels do that? it gets on my nerves but after a while you just get so fed up of it you start to see the funny side of it all!

Okay, now that this thread is back on, here's one.

34. Copying "To Sony a great idea": Hey, why don't you start a retaliation and copy the level "To Sony a great idea"? Not only will you fill up the Community with nothing but spam, but you also get the opportunity to fill your Memory Stick with a useless level just for being such a gullible person.

I agree, I hate that in levels.

Another thing: Undecorated Dark Matter. Everyone loves that deep blue of dark matter, so when you're making a floating platform just plonk a slab of DM there.

The beginning to Taffey's levels often have a Sensor Switch near the door. I don't think that's unoriginal at all to be honest.

Look, this thing depends on the circumstances. If this was a sacred tomb, then sure, make a puzzle for that "Ooh! Shiny door with abnormally large lock!". But, if this is plain out realism, say a super market, then the door should open when a person nears it, not when you figure out a puzzle. If this was true in real life, then I would never leave my local supermaket! Well, so long as the puzzle is fun.

Oops.

And regarding switches that open doors; I have nothing wrong with a sensor switch being used, in fact I like that feature a lot. It's button and pull switches placed right beside the door. I just feel cheated when I see that, as it just isn't gameplay.

Ughh... these people won't stop! They think that making some "great idea" level that we should all copy will make them more special. I think I'm getting more annoyed by these then "SuperSackball" itself.

35. Revolution, Baby!: Why put up with the PSP's terrible Create Mode? It's bad enough that we have to create our levels, but now they expect us to earn our hearts? Well, say no to that, and instead, start a revolution! You know you're the best when your 1 star'ed level gets copied by nobody but people like you. Yes, Sony is bound to listen to you and you only.

Seriously, these levels are wasting space on the Community Moon. I can say for a fact that this "revolution" idea is just a complete load of croc.

no 4 is unfair. You CANT center wheels automatically like ps3. And if you try REALLY hard to get it in the middle, it's usually still off center

Centring Motor Bolts is as easy as 123 or ABC! LOL

Here's what you need to do.

1). Select your wheel with the PopIt Cursor and place it where you want it to be on your vehicle.
2). Back out of your Cursor by pressing the O Button once and go to the Motor Bolt.
3). Place the Motor Bolt exactly where it is.

There you go! An exactly centred Motor Bolt on your Wheel.

Hope this helps,

It's also important never to add any sounds anywhere. Especially after doing something important you must make sure the player doesn't get any feedback from doing so. Using weird or unrelated sounds will also be extra exiting. Who knew that a fart-sound actually indicates a time limit. These rules could also be applied with music. Glokenpop for a chase scene? An excellent idea!2010-07-12 13:23:00

Unreasonable Jumps You mean that Sackboy is supposed to make it across the gas pit? I thought I was supposed to make the gap just slightly longer than the distance Sackboy could jump. I even made it cooler by adding a neat little wall at the top of the far end so that you have to make a perfect arc to get there safely... but you'll never make it across in the first place.2010-08-29 06:10:00

37: Don't use logic gates! Why use logic gates? They're boring, complicated and unfun to make.
Just slap in a grab switch on dissolve material and skip the hassle of making a stupid vehicle respawner for whenever people die on your electrified ice!

38: Don't use decoration! Decorating isn't useful, it just makes your precious totally not obvious spike and dissolve trap be easily avoidable and lag your level a lot!
Levels are for playing, not art!

39: Spam Story Mode characters! Everyone loves the story mode characters! So why not return the feeling of Story Mode by adding everyone's favorite characters?
They'll get you instant 5 star + Heart!

40: Scatter Community Objects around your level! Your level will be better the more community stuff you add to it! Sharing is caring, and the creators will be glad to see their creations used in totally not lame levels!
