Optional costume tutorial at beginning of level - good or bad idea?

Archive: 3 posts

I was thinking, to add a little bit more to a level's story, to put in a little optional tutorial at the start of the level (before the level actually "begins") that players can follow to customize their sackperson to go with that level's story.

Since there are many levels out there with a moderate to strong emphasis on story, featuring a particular character and his/her journey through the level, it might help build the story a little better to actually play as the character intended instead of one of the player's own costumes.

What do you all think? Good idea, bad idea?

I think it really depends. If the basic idea of the level is clear from the title/info, I think it's unnecessary. The people who would appreciate getting more involved in the story are already going to dress their player appropriately beforehand, I'd imagine. If I find a level titled "Ultimate Ninja Challenge" and I'm crazy for ninjas, chances are I'm going to throw on my best ninja outfit before or immediately after loading it up.

Those who don't feel affected by it one way or the other are more likely, in my opinion, to just feel irritated at being told what to wear for a level they just want to run through and move on to the next. Being prompted to change their outfit might seem to them like just a waste of the level's thermometer and their time.

Plus, unless it's done properly, something like that could almost do more to draw you out of the level. I played through the Little Dead Space levels and never realized I was dressed as a roman soldier because I was too drawn into the level's atmosphere. If he had broken that attention he nailed right at the start by saying "dress as a scary space man for this," it probably would have felt... well, gamey.

Now a way around that might be to have a reason for prompting a costume change. "Ar, matey, in order to get past the guards in this port, it mightn't be a bad idear to dress like a lady, arrrrr." Then play off the character's decision in wardrobe (hopefully) by having another character compliment his/her dress or something, I dunno.

In summation, it could really go either way. It all depends on how successful the creator is at drawing the player into the illusion of their level.

As long as it's optional just go for it. Anything is great as long as it's optional.2010-01-02 13:23:00
