Oooo! Looks like I have some competition with my future Jack and the Beanstalk level! I'll try to check it out ASAP and give you some feedback. 2010-01-02 03:43:00

Hey I played your level again tonight and I think I liked it even more than before. It's simple, straighforward and enjoyable.
I will not go into great details as I already gave you feedback on this one but hey, you thread needed a worthy bump.

I only have one real con towards the level. The secret under the coulds is very nice but there's no way to get out of there. If you fall from there you're also falling at the bottom of the level and need to pop yourself.

Anyhow, I like the other improvements and the lighting changes. An enjoyable level although I don't know how it fares against the competition in the contest. (didn't play the other stuff)

Visuals:

Amazing. Spectacular. The Beanstalk was AWESOME, the Giant was AWESOME. The Hen was.... well... it was pretty awesome... personally I see nothing wrong with the visuals.

Gameplay:

Lots of nice contraptions and puzzles and they fit pretty well. The Beanstalk platforms were ingenously laid out. The Giant was cool but I expected more than I thought, like the Giant's arm smashing through the wall and trying to grab you or somthing of the sort. The chase off the beanstalk was the icing on the cake.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think it will stand as a fine level and if I don't win, so be it! I may do more work on it up until the deadline, but I'm just happy I got the boss fight to work! lol, I've never had much luck with those sorts of things...2010-01-02 15:24:00

-The initial climb is good, but a little boring.
-For the dialog beside the money bag, I think it should not freeze the camera. I like to try and get as many points as I can and having to close the dialog right away to keep my multiplier doesn't help.
-Nice hidden area under bridge.
-The house looks nice. Maybe think of a way to interact with the goose and harp more.
-Was I supposed to lodge the shoe up against the chest to get the harp prize bubble? It didn't seem like an intuitive way to do it, but it worked for me.
-I got killed because of the "what are you throwing" dialog box during the boss fight. Make it so I can still move during this.
-The boss was nice.
-Nice visuals for the ending.

Overall, I think there needs to be more to do. It looks really nice, but if you take away all the visuals, there isn't much left. Just think if everything was made of basic materials and no stickers, would it still be fun to play? A level with good fundamentals should be. If you want to compete in a contest, you will need both fundamental good gameplay that would be fun no matter what as well as good visuals. You've got the visuals down good, but you need to add in more to do. However, I'm also judging it more harshly then I normally would since you said you are gonna enter it in the contest. Good luck.

Again thanks everyone! I've added a new ending, but I will look into making it more interactive! Thanks Waffledog! Hmmm, I don't know if that sounds delicious or not...2010-01-02 21:22:00

I wasn't aware that there could only be one level on each "subject"...

I thought that's what you meant with the whole "there has already been" part...

Not that it is applicable too much, but yes - "Julesyjules" has a "Jack, Sack & the Beanstalk" level.... check it out, it's a great level.

Ok, now onto my review of this level
PROS:

+ Loved the graphics and details... particularly in the giants house.
+ Very playable - nice placement of point bubbles makes it more than a "run-through".
+ I loved the fun dropping down the beanstalk near the end - great way to keep bubble chains going.
+ Nice puzzle getting the bubbles out of the chest.
+ Some nicely hidden bubbles (which I found!)

- The "goose" is a duck . That was the first thing my 8-year-old said as I was going through that part of the level. It may have been done on purpose for humor, though - so I'm not really judging based on that.
- The boss was fairly easy to cheat on. You could just get to the right side, stand out of the way, and shoot. Wait for his art to go to the right before finishing your shots and the points are easy to get. Not a big deal, though... making bosses too hard is probably MY biggest fault and younger players don't like my levels as much, but just mentioning it.
- There were some plane shifting issues in the initial climb which were a bit irritating. Maybe smear some invisible rubber or dark matter and keep the player from shifting to the back layer unnecessarily in a few areas?

I've played many of your other levels, and all of them are 5 star levels in my opinion. Comparing with your other levels, I would put this at 4 stars mainly because it's missing some of your trademark "throw you around" gameplay which I love... but I gave it 5 stars and a heart because it is really good compared to a general creator.

Great job!

A very nice, fun and all round enjoyable level.

The visuals were excellent as with all your levels. I especially enjoyed all the details in the giant?s house ? the harp was superb! The exteriors were also nicely done. Your clouds were particularly satisfying for some reason, lol.

The gameplay was enjoyable too and I liked the puzzle/secret elements. I agree with CCubbage though that it wasn?t perhaps quite as fun and challenging as in some of your other recent levels (I am very fond your Land of Crumb levels!). If this has to do with trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible because it's a competition entry, I can fully understand why you may have pitched it this way. I did still very much enjoy the level though and I?m sure I will be playing again!

Wow you make some real nice additions since the last time I played!!
I love the new beginning and the totally new end part! You made great changes to the with the level in overall too. Gone are the stilletos, your house is better in general now. Making the duck fall now serves a purpose, I love that. The part with the giant is also better. Not being able to grab it now makes the level more coherent and believable.

I still fell out of the level in 2 places though:

- If you drop yourself from the secret cloud.

- At the boss in the middle layer. (I walked toward him after dropping down for the back layer after I got the prize bubble there).

Great job man, keep up!

I think I fixed the hole in the second layer at the boss fight. I'll re check it though! As for falling off the secret cloud; hmmm... I'll have to think on that one! Thanks everyone!2010-01-05 14:00:00

Ive played a vew versions now, and I have to say that I really like your level though it might be a little short , and you can kill that giant with your paintgun just standing at one spot (if one doesnt go for scorebubbles).
I love the tree, mustve taken quite some time to create!

I do think it would have been a blast to see that tree grow all the way up to the sky, might be a little hard to do but I do think it would have added to the oompf.
Also, at the ending when you cut down the tree... why doesnt it fall down?

Compared to lands of crumb.. I do feel like this level was a step backwards, ( so now make that giant leep forwards!)

I think this level has the potency to win, but I do think there are maybe one or two maps out there that might have abigger chance..
nontheless have you played a few other fairytale levels? ther was one from a japan/chinese dude with cinderella and the three piglets that made me lol a lot.

my "opinion" might have something to do with how amazed i was by crumb though
4 hearts and I allready hearted u and the level!

Well, the beanstalk does fall, unless you played it within the half hour I published it when it didn't fall. it was stuck to a sliver of the clouds! That should not be an issue. As of right now, the thermo is full. I have 4 or 5 days to work on it tho, so maybe I'll see what I can do! Thanks everyone!!

BTW, I can't wait to unleash my new series on the LBP community!
It's a secret, but one of my best, imo!

Yes, a series! All at once. I built the second level first and while I was doing it I thought of a bigger story and I really like it! Working on the first one now. Maybe up to 5 levels, not sure yet! One is done though, but I won't release til it's complete...2010-01-07 19:26:00
