Scanning data... Great designs - found! Fabulous gameplay - found! Thrilling levels - found! Searching database... Questions formulated! Answers deconstructed from binary source into English... Silicon coating vapourised... Prepare yourselves, mere mortals, mrsupercomputer is in the building! Read on... -------------------------- http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/images/creator_spotlight/mrsupercomputer/mulberrywoods.jpg If you go down to the woods today, you'll meet some scary lumberjacks! The Low-Down What video games did you enjoy playing before LBP was released? I play a little bit of everything, but right before LBP was released I was spending a lot of time with Halo 3, Skate, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Rainbow Six Vegas, The Orange Box, Braid, and N+. Occasionally, I'd pull out my old Gamecube for some Super Smash Bros. action as well. What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like? The first complete level that I built was Mulberry Woods. After scrapping a rather lackluster zombie apocalypse level, I decided to spend some time making random objects in create mode. One of those objects was a bull dozer, which I found much to wimpy, so I modified it into the deadly saw dozer! I loved it so much that I decided to build an entire level around it and that's how Mulberry Woods was born. In my opinion, it hasn't aged that well, but it still holds a special place in my heart and I'd love to do a "remastered" version someday. What levels have you published to date? Mulberry Woods Basilisk Bog Zephyr Valley Manufactured Madness Which of these is your own favourite? And why? While I really love them all, I'd have to pick Zephyr Valley as my personally favorite. I was really happy with how it all came together and I absolutely love the characters and world I created. Are there any other creators who inspire you? Oh, definitely! There are way too many to list, but I'll highlight two guys that I rarely see mentioned, Keldur and Javi Haguse. They both have just a small number of published levels, but I've found myself amazed at the talent that's on display in them. The mechanics and visuals in Keldur's level, Lafarge's Request, are insanely good and the atmosphere in Javi's Descent series is some of the best I've seen in any level. It's exciting to see them and so many other creators continually raising the bar, I just hope I can keep up! What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating? It has to be the "fail to load" error that appeared when I published Zephyr Valley. The error didn't prevent people from playing completely (players could usually load it on the second attempt), but it was extremely frustrating. In fact, it was so frustrating that I spent the next day frantically copying the level, piece by piece, to a new space on my moon. And then, after I spent all of that time rebuilding it, I discovered that the error was simply caused by a corrupted prize I was giving away at the scoreboard. What?s your pet hate in LBP? The limited profile space. I currently have four full levels on my moon and I am constantly prompted with the "Your profile cannot be saved because it is too large..." message. Because of this, I've had to removed a lot of prototype objects and even some half finished levels from my moon. In the last Mm podcast, I believe they said they would be increasing it in the future so that's good news. I just hope it comes sooner rather than later. PLEASE NOTE: This interview was conducted before the updated profile space on LBP! If you worked for Media Molecule, what tool/object/material would you have liked to see developed? I'd love to have the ability to turn material invisible or inactive, so that I can edit objects or switches located in the background without having to move the objects in the foreground. It'd also be great to keep them invisible outside of create mode as well, so that creators could make use of invisible material without having it become a major hassle to move and manipulate. I know some people dislike invisible barriers, but when used correctly, they can be very helpful. http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/images/creator_spotlight/mrsupercomputer/zephyrvalley.jpg The legendary "Zephyr Valley". Play it now! If you've already played it, play it again! Digging Deeper Your creations are a fabulous mix of technical know-how and design flair. How do you get the balance right? Well, I don't have a specific process that I go through when creating a level, but ever since Mulberry Woods, I've tried to plan both my visuals and mechanics of my level on paper before hopping in to create mode. Of course, some ideas don't translate well from paper to in game, so I also spend a lot of time developing small, "bite-sized", versions of my levels where I can tweak visuals and test my gameplay ideas. This allows me to explore the versatility of a theme or idea before I invest a lot of time into a full level. I believe it's this little bit of extra planning that helps me achieve the right balance of visuals and gameplay. Zephyr Valley is in my Top 50 favourite levels - did the level work out as you intended or was it planned differently? I'd say that about 95% of the level turned out exactly how I envisioned. There were a few areas where I had planned different platforming elements (specifically more timed platforms), but I just couldn't get them right, so they got cut. One area that was completely unplanned was the race through the stormy clouds at the very end. Because it wasn't planned out beforehand, it feels a little tacked on. It turned out okay, but I wish I could have executed it better. You managed to make 'gritty', 'moody' and 'industrial' genuine words to describe LBP levels. Is this an accurate observation? I suppose it is, especially when thinking about levels like Manufacture Madness and Basilisk Bog. I'm certainly not the first (or best) person to make gritty and moody environments, but when I do, I try my very best to pull the players into that setting. Without exception, your levels are great fun to play. What do you personally find fun in other creators' levels? Thanks, I'm really glad you had fun with them! Personally, I have the most fun with levels that keep the player on the go. Well designed jumps and a nice progression in difficulty is essential. And while I enjoy puzzles, I like for them to be relatively quick to solve, so that I can get back to running, jumping, and swinging through the rest of the level! You're the 'two-word-snappy-title' king! Is this a conscious thing, or does the title come to you right at the end of the creation process? I don't know about about being the king, but I'm certainly glad people liked the titles. I'm extremely picky when it comes to the names and in most cases, I don't come up with them until the very end. Sometimes, it would drive me crazy trying to think of a title, because I would have the level ready to release, but no name to go along with it! Thankfully, I have a wonderful wife who listens to her husband go on and on about the video games he loves and she was very helpful in selecting the names of my levels. Hmm, now that I think about, maybe she just helped so that I'd finally shut up about it! And finally, if there was an actual super computer building a level, what would the level be like? 01001001011101000010000001110111011011110111010101 10110001100100001000000110010101101110011100110110 11000110000101110110011001010010000001110101011100 110010000001100001011011000110110000100001 -------------------- http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/images/creator_spotlight/mrsupercomputer/manmadness.jpg The 'gritty' introduction to "Manufactured Madness" Our Conclusions Playing mrsupercomputer's levels again was like a guilty pleasure - much like saving your favourite chocolates or bottle of wine for a special occasion. I'm not convinced that 'levels' is the correct description for them. mrsupercomputer builds WORLDS, and these worlds are inhabited by fantastical creatures or amazing machines and contraptions. These worlds invite you in and absorb your attention, and it's only when you've reached the scoreboard will you feel like a complete amateur creator! These worlds are fabulous to play, and are among the true pinnacle of LBP Community Levels. Impressed? Oh, you WILL be! | 2010-01-02 02:03:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
A truly great creator to make a wonderful start to the 2010 Creator Spotlights. Thank you for posting, CC. Apart from his superb creations, mrsupercomputer is one of the most kind, gentile and most modest person you could ever wish for to interview. As we sometimes say in the UK, he's a 'bloody nice bloke'. Modern translation - he's cool! A wonderful creator who very much deserves this. Well done, B! | 2010-01-02 02:12:00 Author: MrsSpookyBuz Posts: 1492 |

Mrsupercomputer's levels are indeed fantastic. Combination of awesome visuals and addictive game play are second to none. When I play them, I'm torn between playing for fun or playing to study them. | 2010-01-02 03:00:00 Author: thanatos989 Posts: 248 |

I gotta agree with you... that javi haguse is something else! lmao Dude, thanks for the compliments! I'm truly honored! mrSC's is one of my favorite creators and has changed the way I build and see LBP. He truly has that Midas touch and I'm honored to play and build with him! ..keep an eye out! I can tell you that he'll be raising the bar once more pretty soon! Congrats! | 2010-01-02 03:56:00 Author: javi haguse Posts: 744 |
I loved mrsupercomputer's Basilik Bog. Tis one of my favorites from WAY back. Congrats to mrsupercomputer for the spotlight and thanks again to MrsSpookyBuz for another great interview. | 2010-01-02 03:59:00 Author: Kendan Posts: 56 |
All hail the best creator in LBP...besides Splapp-me-do. I reccomend Splapperz for the next creator spotlight. Tree Fortress 1 and 2 were the best two levels of the year. Zephyr Valley's enemies were incredible. The environment also felt very Prince of Persia-y to me for some reason. Oh, and Manufactured Madness is so G. | 2010-01-02 04:02:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
Another great interview! I've kinda been hoping mrsupercomputer would be the next Creator spotlighted, after playing Basilisk Bog for the first time he became one of my favorite creators, even after all these months that level still remains in my Top 5, I know his next level will be Zephyr Valley 2 but I still have my hopes that he will one day create Basilisk Bog 2. | 2010-01-02 04:13:00 Author: TheFirstAvenger Posts: 787 |
I gotta agree with you... that javi haguse is something else! lmao Really? I'd have to disagree. His levels are bland, and very short of effects. lol. Just kidding. MrSuperComputer, very nice move of shedding light on these two underrated but phenomenal creators. | 2010-01-02 04:14:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
Thanks for the kind words everyone and thanks for the great interview MrsSpookyBuz, it was fun! ..keep an eye out! I can tell you that he'll be raising the bar once more pretty soon! Hmm, I don't know about that. Best not to hype anything up too much... the pressure will kill me! The environment also felt very Prince of Persia-y to me for some reason. Well, the newest game was my inspiration so I bet that's why! I know his next level will be Zephyr Valley 2 but I still have my hopes that he will one day create Basilisk Bog 2. Water would work well with a Basilisk Bog sequel me thinks... | 2010-01-02 04:16:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |

I remember when I first saw Mulberry Woods on the level showcase, seemed like last week, look at you now =&apos. Mrsupercomputer's levels never failed to impress and deserves every bit of admiration that he receives. I definetely saw that coming, him bein spotlighted. I mean, the clues were clear enough to me: amazing aesthetics, nice paced levels, revolutionary elements in every level, dinamic gameplay (I do specially love this), detail filled gameplay and two worded titles. Yup, that's a pro. Besides, I love how in his levels we always end up kind of doing the same: rescuing; be it forests, swamp people, skyish towns or robots. Makes you feel like a little hero! PS: And thanks for the mention! However, I wish this interview had been done after you played part two, so your comment in there could have made my ego grow even larger! | 2010-01-02 11:12:00 Author: Keldur Posts: 628 |

Anyway well done Mrsuppercompurter, amazing levels. Loved all of them. Love the graphic too, I hope I'm that Goud one day | 2010-01-02 12:28:00 Author: Unknown User |
The following message has been converted from binary to hexidecimal for simplified reading: 47 72 65 61 74 20 43 72 65 61 74 6F 72 You're definately in my top 10 creators, man! (I won't mention which one because it will lessen the impact if I say it to another creator in the future). Not too many creators have the sense of visuals, gameplay, atmosphere, and story - you're one of those few people who can pull it ALL together consistently. Definately deserving of a creator spotlight! | 2010-01-02 12:44:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |

Grats to mrsupercomputer on the spotlight. Zephyr Valley and Manufactured Madness both rocked my face. I'm still puzzling out the logic that must be behind the jetpack boss. All in all, I think he shows a great balance between flashy additives and good-old-fashioned. Grats again. | 2010-01-02 14:25:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |

Exactly what I do. I have a friend that whenever she comes over, we almost ALWAYS play SSBM together. Never grows old. | 2010-01-02 17:05:00 Author: chezhead Posts: 1063 |

Congratulations on the creator spotlight mrsupercomputer! It just amazes me how the super creators are also so very modest. It goes without saying that your levels are just top-notch, awe-inspiring, brilliantly put together gems, but I also thank you for being such a great presence and role model as well. Thank you MrsSpookyBuz for another excellent choice and, as always, thoughtful and insightful interview. | 2010-01-03 02:53:00 Author: ScoutsBoo Posts: 63 |
Too cool!! Happy New Year and a brand new Creator Spotlight to make it all so much more special. A wonderful choice to bring in the New Year as well!! When I first arrived at LBPC, I got some feedback from mrsupercomputer and to honor my F4F I wondered if there was any particular level I could look at. The replay was "Nope, you can play which ever one sounds like fun to you! Hope you enjoy it!" Well.. not only is he humble, but I was hooked for sure and an instant fan once I started playing his levels. Incredible detail, great atmosphere and total fun. ...and a really great guy! He has really helped me raise the bar in my own creations with his advice and introspective thoughtful comments. Thanks mrsupercomputer!! MrsSpookyBuz thank you so much for the honor of reading these amazing interviews. You are a spectacular interviewer and I love all the extra goodies you toss in to kick them off as well as the follow up. Wonderful stuff! | 2010-01-03 07:36:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Aaaaah that computer with the super levels...who also happens to be a guy....Ugh, I'm messing up again!! Congratulations Mr. Supercomputer, you are without a doubt one of my favourite creators and surely one of those few creators that can actually transport players to other and dare I say "magical" worlds. Great interview once more, thanks for keeping up with these!! | 2010-01-03 08:24:00 Author: Zwollie Posts: 2173 |

So is that a confirmation??? It is something I would like to do some day, but we'll see. Zephyr Valley 2 has taken a lot longer than I anticipated and once I finish, I think I'd like to do something different than all my other levels. Maybe something simple that I can get published quick. After that, a Basilisk Bog sequel is definitely a possibility. My plans always change though, so who really knows!?! | 2010-01-03 15:50:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |

Definitely a must-do for creator spotlight. What took so long, jeeeeeez! Great read! It's cool to learn how different we are in our approaches, both to creating and playing. Thanks to both of you for another winning spotlight. | 2010-01-04 08:12:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |
Ah, I can finally comment on this after trying unsuccessfully from a phone for two days... Mrsupercomputer sucks and Javi Hagusi is waaay better! Haha, just kidding, MrSC. You know already that you were my creator hero when I started seriously creating! Glad you got your spotlight. And thanks to Lisa for the great read (even though it was dated!). Keep it up, girl! | 2010-01-04 08:38:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Probably my favorite active creator. I like that part about his design process. Working on things in a new slot before instituting them into the level was something I started doing with some of my last few levels, and I'm definitely taking the idea of sketching things out to heart. I've been drawing out isometric diagrams, logic and design concepts, and idea notations like crazy when I get bored... can't wait to put mrsupercomputer's philosophy to the pad. Thanks, Mrs. | 2010-01-04 15:04:00 Author: Unknown User |

Recently I was thinking of making a platformer in a factory. So my vision was checkered plate n iron material...in straight boring lines  Then I played Manufactured Madness. What a level, u can literally feel the iron and the heat of melted iron and smoke. The environment is bang on perfect, hell I cant even make boxes look that good with great use of tape. People up there in LBP truly deserve to be there and one of em is Mr. Supercomputer. Cheers | 2010-01-07 03:10:00 Author: Apu Posts: 17 |
