If I try to build a level while my creative vibe is at low ebb, it usually turns out rubbish. At such times I think it's best to quit the game, play something else instead, and then come back later to see if the vibe has returned. Assassin's Creed is my "secondary" game at the moment...a great diversion from creative burnout!2010-01-01 13:13:00

Here's my Step-by-Step guide to being inspired:

1. Get a dictionary or any book. (Dictionary works best though. However, if you want the level to be a specific genre, use a book of that genre.)
2. Flip the Ditionary/Book to a random page.
3. Search for the first Noun on the page. Write it down. (Don't use words like he,she etc)
4. Repeat Step 2 and 3, but this time look for an adjective (or a describing word)
5. Write that down as well.
6. Put the words together and SHABAM! You have inspiriation!

If you need extra help for the story of the level or something, ask yourself questions about the phrase. E.g. Bored Wizard: Why is he bored? What will he do to not be bored? What will this mean? etc

The great thing about this level is that you can do it again and again if you don't like the outcome! Then just start planning the level!
Hope this works for you! It did for me!

I usually go for a walk, read a book , look at pictures, or watch a movie.
While outside i may see something inspiring, like a big weird-shaped tree. If nature doesn't help, i read books and watch movies, and slam some story together with my own twist on it, and tadaa! A story!

I quite rarely use these techniques since i rarely run out of ideas...

Wow really useful advice i might try this!

What i would do is just don't make a level! After playing other levels you will have picked out tiny ideas from other levels and eventually come up with a new level! but plasmavore's idea is better!

These are all great ideas for getting those creative juices running! I for one just look at what interests me. If you spend time on what you yourself enjoy the most, you'll find that it is much easy to think of things for your level. What I also like to do is put together a rough blueprint of my level. This allows me to "map" out what im going to put into my level and plan ahead any things that could happen during the level. I usually draw on a piece of paper because its easy to erase and edit and such. It also doesnt hurt to do research on somethings to get ideas or concepts. Your creativity is only limited to what you limit yourself to.2010-01-04 07:28:00
