The Interwebs by tsr13 (PSP)

Archive: 60 posts

It is the question that drives us: What are the Interwebs?

Join forces with a mysterious character and discover the true nature of the Interwebs... or something along those lines anyway. This is my third PSP level; It is an assortment of light platforming, challenges, and silliness all wrapped up in a Matrix-flavored tortilla and served with a side of random things I found amusing.

I started writing down ideas for a Matrix-esque level several months ago but never had enough to make a whole PS3 level. It worked out to be about the perfect size for the PSP however, so I adapted my ideas and just had fun with it. It took me forever to come up with sticker-based characters that I liked (as usual), but the hard part was narrowing down what specific parts of the movie I wanted to parody.

I hope you like my abstract brand of humor. Enjoy, have fun, and thanks for playing.

Oh, and happy new year!

Hey Taffey,

Another level already? You're spoiling us.

Well it seems your meticulousness with the characters paid off: they were quirky and crudely adorable, burned with your brand of humor. My favorite was the one in the mail room.

I loved the introduction with the computer and the office setting. I really enjoyed the maze and listening to all the coughs, ticking, and other cubicle sound effects...I know it wasn't the centerpiece of the level, but it actually ended up being my favorite. Details, details, details--the environment was realistic, and the seriousness of the professional setting contrasted with the light-heartedness of LBP stickers and your humor made me smile.

That aside, I didn't understand the transition to the abstract interweb in the context of the whole level. Right after the euphonic maze, we traverse metallic, wired platforms and meet a funky cow. I wasn't too impressed with the design of the cow, but the amiable personality compensated for it. I loved the Mirror's Edge section and spamming the search engines...I thought your humor shined there the most.

I know this section was intended to be abstract to embody the random datastream of the interweb, but it just didn't work for me. It just seemed random. If you have any pink mercury left in your thermometer to spare, perhaps putting more program windows in the background, a "01001010" motif, or somehow implementing a computer screen would help? But it could just be me being nitpicky and/or not understanding the relation to the Matrix as I am not a huge fan of the franchise...

Another spot I found interesting was the pills. Being the sucker that I am, I grabbed the blue pill, but was disappointed that I actually didn't have a choice. Wouldn't it be interesting to have alternate endings that would warrant multiple plays? But then again, I think I'm demanding too much.

Sorry if I'm rambling...just got back from a crazy New Years day party with family, but was so excited you posted a new level that I decided to play it at 4 in the morning...

You completely obliterate the rating system, and I hope my feedback was more valuable than any amount of stars. But for the sake of promoting your level, here's 5:star:'s, a level heart, and of course, I hearted you already! Thanks for the New Years present: that's an amazing foreshadowing of levels to come...

Thanks jeffcu28. As always, your feedback is thorough and insightful. I really appreciate you taking the time to relay your impressions in such detail.

By design (or accident?), this level is very random and off-the-wall. There were many times throughout the build process I stopped and asked myself, "What the heck am I doing? This makes no sense at all. I'm putting sunglasses on what??" I went forward with it anyway, largely for my own amusement but also to see what people thought of it.

Another level already? You're spoiling us.What can I say? I had a week off after my vacation and decided to pull a marathon session in Create Mode. I'm sure my next level (Space Corps part 3, name is classified) won't arrive nearly that quickly, but you never know.

I really enjoyed the maze and listening to all the coughs, ticking, and other cubicle sound effects...I know it wasn't the centerpiece of the level, but it actually ended up being my favorite. Details, details, details--the environment was realistic, and the seriousness of the professional setting contrasted with the light-heartedness of LBP stickers and your humor made me smile.Glad you were able to appreciate that part of the level. I've spent too many years in cube farms, so that's a little social commentary on my part.

I loved the Mirror's Edge section and spamming the search engines...I thought your humor shined there the most.I settled on the cow early on - just having it around made me laugh, so I knew it was the right choice. I tried all sorts of things with it... After hours of experimenting, I came to the conclusion that it is very easy to make a cow look creepy simply by adding human face parts. Less turned out to be more, as they say. I also wanted to have it wearing a leather trench coat, but I got totally stumped on how to do that. Black stickers ended up looking like... a bunch of black stickers. Oh well.

But it could just be me being nitpicky and/or not understanding the relation to the Matrix as I am not a huge fan of the franchise...I had a lot of trouble coming up with transitions I liked for the red pill section. In the end, I decided to save thermo and keep it simple. One of my earlier designs took up so much thermo that I would have had to end the level immediately afterwards. I digress. You're spot on with your feedback - I'll play around and see if I can improve that area.

Another spot I found interesting was the pills. Being the sucker that I am, I grabbed the blue pill, but was disappointed that I actually didn't have a choice. Wouldn't it be interesting to have alternate endings that would warrant multiple plays? But then again, I think I'm demanding too much.Great minds think alike! A branched path was in the works but never happened because of that darned thermo.

I hope my feedback was more valuable than any amount of stars.I couldn't have said it any better myself - it most definitely was. You're a brilliant creator yourself, so seeing this level through your eyes is extremely valuable to me. Thanks as always for the stars, heart(s), and honest opinions. Glad you enjoyed the level!

Hey Taffey,

I didn't mean to put down your cow...it was hilarious. I just thought it was less elaborate than your other characters. And a cow with a trench coat? That would've been amazing if you could pull it off, and that would explain the sunglasses! A cow version of Neo...wow...that just blows my mind. But I'm glad you used your better judgment...

I'm not playing LBP PSP these days, but as soon as I read you had uploaded a new level, I rushed to my PSP and inserted LBP. Let's be honest: I didn't enjoy this level as much as I enjoyed your 2 space levels, which are two of the best levels available right now.

The start is brilliant: the screen with messages appearing (wow), the office environment, using chairs and stuff to open your way... It was amazing and I was enjoying your level as much as you can enjoy anything. Congratulations for that part.

But then, it all turned weird and random. Reading your posts on this thread, I understand this was entirely intentional, but I don't know, I didn't get it. Matrix is one of my favourite movies, and I laughed with the parody bits, you're a master of humor and I always have some laughs with your quirky characters and crazy dialogues. But overall, the level feels awkward. Not rushed, because everything works fine and seems polished and well-thought... but awkward nonetheless.

Mixing the Matrix jumps with Mirror's Edge was a stroke of genius, though. That section was fun, and I would like to praise the intrincate pipes: nice work there.

Anyway, I gave you 4 stars and for the help of promotion of your other work, I favourited the level. I can't wait to play your next project.

Thanks Lleonard for the play and the honest feedback! Every creation is a learning experience, and I'm very happy I can count on all of you to tell me what you really think. Of course every creator wants to hear "100% awesome, no issues!", but that doesn't really help a person become a better creator.

Let's be honest: I didn't enjoy this level as much as I enjoyed your 2 space levels, which are two of the best levels available right now. This statement alone has made my day. The fact that you loaded up this level simply because you saw it was one of mine is a huge compliment - you have my sincere gratitude for that. For what it's worth, I've done the same thing with all of your levels following the first one I played.

But overall, the level feels awkward. Not rushed, because everything works fine and seems polished and well-thought... but awkward nonetheless.Weird and random is exactly how I would describe the level myself, so you are definitely right about that. I wanted to try out a trippy Kubrick kind of vibe for the second half of the level just to see how it would turn out. It's definitely one of those things that either you get or you don't, and to be honest I don't even get Kubrick films myself most of the time.

Mixing the Matrix jumps with Mirror's Edge was a stroke of genius, though. That section was fun, and I would like to praise the intrincate pipes: nice work there. Thanks! My original idea was to make that section lame and annoying to poke fun at the many terrible community levels out there. I then decided that, even if people understood my joke, it would still be lame and annoying. So, my better judgement took over and I did my best to make it fun but extremely cliche.

Anyway, I gave you 4 stars and for the help of promotion of your other work, I favourited the level. I can't wait to play your next project.Much appreciated kind sir - I'm looking forward to your next publish as well, regardless of platform.

A great level. This may seem like a stupid question but I don't get what you do on the Spam bit? It's a shooting gallery type of thing. Use your Spam sticker (aka "pink doodle") and stick it on the search agent icons.

This was a good level, but not as much fun as your space levels, that aside, I liked having your humor still there to smile at. My favourite Part was spamming the search engines, a nice addition to the level. Good Work 5 Stars, a level heart, and, since I played "The Right Stuffing", an author heart. 2010-01-07 14:22:00

Nice level again. Not quite as good as your others, but still very playable.

You seem to be able to use stickers alone and make a level look pretty detailed and work for you. I think the stickering has pretty much become your 'style'.

Good points:

- The intro, I don't really like intros on the ps3, but because I hadn't really seen it before on psp so it worked quite well.
- Stickering (obviously)
- Sound effects (Brilliantly used, it is something that adds a great deal to a level but is easily overlooked by both creators and a players)
- Control of music (always fitting and always used well) something I'm terrible with, I usually just stick one track on and that'll do. Not something I like messing around with at all!
- Humour! The big one! This is what is bringing people back to your levels most of all I think, it's that sense of fun that you're instilling on everyone. Without your stories I don't think your levels would be half of what they are (and coming from someone who despises story levels in LBP...that's a compliment!)

I think the overall geometry and aesthetics could be improved. Your sticker work is evidently your most important tool, and as a result the shapes and structures of the actual materials tend to take a back seat. I think in the interest of self improvement, possibly try and incorporate more material structure detail and less sticker usage. Even if it is only when messing around in create mode.

By no means am I trying to pull your style away from you, but I think by changing it up a little and trying new things it can only lead to improvement!

Without your stories I don't think your levels would be half of what they are (and coming from someone who despises story levels in LBP...that's a compliment!)Thanks on all points! I agonize over all of that stuff, particularly the sound and music selection, so it's good to see that it has been noticed. I think sounds and music are crucial aspects of a level that makes it feel "right" or "wrong", whether or not a player consciously realizes it.

I think in the interest of self improvement, possibly try and incorporate more material structure detail and less sticker usage. Even if it is only when messing around in create mode. You're definitely right here. Complicated shapes combined with complicated stickering can make a level overly busy, so I try to avoid that. In the case of The Interwebs, however, I think I went too far the other way and made the shapes of the materials too simple. As I was getting ready to publish the level I decided I didn't like the stairs in the beginning, but it was really a bit too late to change it at that point. I also don't like how Sackboy's office and his boss' office turned out so empty. That was unintentional and something I didn't even notice until a few days post-publish. I think I did ok with material shapes in the kitchen, but I agree that I fell back on sticker work elsewhere.

By no means am I trying to pull your style away from you, but I think by changing it up a little and trying new things it can only lead to improvement! I was actually playing Clambering Crawlway earlier today, along with a few other community level favorites, for exactly this reason. It's not so much to get gameplay ideas, but rather to help shift my state of mind into seeing something in a different way than I usually see it. It's also very inspiring to see how the creative processes of others come together and helps me come up with random ideas for new level elements.

Thanks again for the play and the thoughts!

Hi Taffey, this is my first time in a forum, and well i?m from M?xico and I use the google translator and some basic english courses to give you a congratulation for your levels (specially the Space Corps series waiting for the third part!!!). I enjoy too much your levels, and also, i want to invite you to try my two levels in LBP PSP, i?m a noob but i?m learning fast
. They?re "R.E.T.R.O." (my first one) and "LBP Christmas", my PSN is indie_r3cords.
And well, as i told you, they are my first levels, but thanks to the LBP comunity, now i have some cool ideas for other levels and i?m working in a better level that I hope to become great.

Thanks for this amusing Behind the Scenes bonus content.

I thought this one was funnier than the space levels, maybe because I'm more familiar with The Matrix than with The Right Stuff. Anyway, about the blue pill: I was expecting to be tossed on a score board, but I went ahead and grabbed it anyway, I just had to know. Does the PSP allow multiple score boards like the PS3 does?

Not much else to comment on, except... The Matrix part could have been longer, but I expect you ran out of thermo, so never mind.

Does the PSP allow multiple score boards like the PS3 does?Yes, actually it does. Woesme Kingdom (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21240-Woesme-Kingdom) by SirPaper is a great example of multiple scoreboard use, and the PSP seems to handle it quite well.

Not much else to comment on, except... The Matrix part could have been longer, but I expect you ran out of thermo, so never mind. This boiled down a resource management issue on my part. When the level was done, I realized that the player should have spent far less time in the office and more time in the Matrix, but I really didn't want to redo everything. I usually prefer to construct the later parts of my level first, both to see if they work and to reserve space on the thermo for them, but I didn't do that here. Thanks for the play and the feedback!

Should work without a second scoreboard (one could use a moving checkpoint instead... ideas, ideas...)I briefly considered something like this, but I didn't want to force the player to restart the whole level just because they were curious about grabbing the blue pill. There's some humor in it yes, but I personally would find something like that kind of annoying. I did consider adding a whole additional scene that you unlock by taking the blue pill, and eventually you'd end up in the Matrix anyway. As with a lot of other stuff, I ended up leaving that out because of the thermo.

Yes, it would be risky, making the player restart, but I think you of all people could get away with it.

Since you didn't go that way, I think the current implementation the best alternative. If the player doesn't have a choice in the matter anyway, best not to drag it out but say it straight away.

OK so im at the spam part right now, and first theres no pink doodle stickerAh, I see now what the problem is. You probably haven't found the pink doodle sticker yet in the story mode levels. If you had the right sticker, it would show up at the top part of the sticker section of your popit menu, which would be clearly marked as "switch triggers".

Hmm, this is an issue I just never thought of. Oops! Well, lesson learned I guess. Sorry about that. I searched around online and couldn't find any completion guides for LBP PSP, so unfortunately I don't know where to tell you to look for it. Does anybody else here happen to recall where they found the sticker in question?

how will putting a sticker on the letter help me get pass the letters? because theres no sticker key (or whatever the'yre called) on the letters. and ive tried putting all the pink stickers on all the letters, and its still not working! There actually are sticker switches on the letters (aka search agents), but they are are set to non-visible. None of the other stickers will work - only the one called "pink doodle" will do it.

Sorry for bugging you like this, but I just really want to finish this level! it sounds awesome! Hey, it's no problem at all! That's what this forum is for, after all.

Well, if it makes you feel any better you are right at the end of the level. The very next thing you do after getting past the search agents is arrive at the scoreboard. So, you're really not missing anything, but it's too bad you can't post your score.

If we were on the PS3 version I'd meet up with you online and get you through that part.

I think the pink doodle sticker is from Down Under, probably the one with the sheep (Gift of the Grab) 2010-01-18 13:19:00

Ah, I see now what the problem is.

There actually are sticker switches on the letters (aka search agents), but they are are set to non-visible. None of the other stickers will work - only the one called "pink doodle" will do it.

Hey, I just had an idea for fixing the spam challenge. I think if you put a bunch of "spam" stickers in the background somewhere (for instance in a "spam filter"), people can pick those up with the sticker edit tool, and use those against the agents.2010-01-20 22:52:00

So far it doesn't seem like too many people are having this specific problem though - I'd definitely rather not republish if I can avoid it.2010-01-20 22:56:00

Congrats Taffey! As I said to Arrestor, I am very happy that the two people who made it onto "Sack it to Me" were two of the greatest members of the LBP PSP community! Keep up the great work!!!2010-02-06 05:57:00

Hey kitcheninja! Thanks for playing, and I'm glad you had fun with the level.

Ah, you found the sticker... You beat me to it. I had to look it up in a FAQ.

For anyone else who might be wondering, you can get the pink doodle sticker in the second Down Under level. I'm not exactly sure where, but it's in a prize bubble pickup somewhere.

Very good level hah, and taffey is Tsr? If so I have a few questions for you! I've become a bit of a fan these past few days, after suddenly finding and playing some of your other levels. Your humour is great.

Yeah, this one was published quite a while ago. If The Matrix and Office Space had an illegitimate child and got it looped on cold medicine, that's pretty much this level.

Glad you liked it!

And thanks everyone for playing. It's good to know this level still holds up, even if it is "that weird one" of mine.

Don't try to make humor. That's impossible. Instead try to realise the truth - There is no humor .

Hey Taffey,

I was about to leave you feedback for this awesome level when I noticed... OMG, it's a total rip-off of my level Imagi-Corp! I don't know how you travelled back in time by 9 months though.... Shame on you Taffey you will not be receiving a heart nor cookie from me! Good day!

Joke! I was just giving you the feedback you wanted!

(And just for the record, Imagi-Corp is WAY AWESOMER than Interwebs anyway!)

wooooooooooooaah, i cant believe that this thread has been ressurected... unbelievable! but well, since im already here posting off-topic stuff in one fot he older threads around, i'll feedback
(BTW, my feack may not be accurate becouse i dont play this level like, in 2 months, so i'll make it right from my memory!)

the good:
-the boss's voice is a donkey-like sound, and that already maes me heart the level
-the part were you grab the red pill is like 30 seconds of fun just to watch the scenary change into a lots of colours very fast!
-i liked the part where you had to kill some random enimies with stickers, becouse i like random stuff!
-why in the sack did the cow had glasses?!?!?!?! BRILLIANT!
-the possibility to ace the level, i like aceable stuff
-i dont remember well what was it, but i remember there was a thing in the office that whenever you get closer it bumped you into some bubbles in the air (that amused me a lot back that time becouse i didnt know what were pistons for )
-the "cofee quest" was simple but it gave me 2 minutes of fun just to get it, simple yet effective, just the way i like it
-i dont remember any good stuff , but i believe there is a lot more

the not-so-good:
-it didnt have spaceships me<3spaceships
-something more dramatic should happen if you grabbed the blue pill, like a spaceship coming to kill you
-the mirror's edge part was WAAAAY too easy, it should have more obstacles (in my opinion)
-i think thats it

overall:
it had a cow that haz glassez, awsome
87,5/100
