What Settings Do I Need To Make This Timing Work?

Archive: 5 posts

Remember the story level "Serpent Shrine" (I think it's called that) where there was a part in the level where you had to grab onto a grab material hanging by a wench, that then got pulled up to safety when the serpent was about to come through. I want to do somthing like that for my level but I can't think of a good way to do the timing.

This is a sketch of what my level looks like so far:

The top image is before and the bottom is after. The 3 long blue materials on the right of the first image is what I want to make go back and forth. I have grab materials hanging by whenches that pull up into the hole to avoid the blue materials. The second and third grab material can only be reached with the help of the boxes that I've made pop out of the ground using pistons that go up and down. My problem here is how do I time everything so that the grab materials and the boxes go back into their holes before the long blue materials hit them? Does anybody have any ideas? I figure I have to use some magnetic key switches. But where and how would I use them?

Do the blue things all move at the same time or one at a time?
Either way here is how I would do it:
Put a magnetic key on the blue moving thing. Then put a number of magnetic switches on the piece that the blue things are connected to. The number of switches you put on will depend on the number of outputs you need (however many times you want to measure the distance). the radius of these switches needs to be so that the switch will change state at the point where the magnetic key is when the blue thing is extended to the point you want to trigger something. You can then wire these switches up however you need them.
Note - if the blue things move at different times then you will need 3 sets (colours) of mag key/switches.
This may have made no sense at all.

Each long blue material is supposed to move at different times, but generally reaching the end within like 2 seconds of eachother. I tried putting a magnetic key switch on the bottom long blue material. Then just out of reach of the switches proximity, i put a magnetic key down. So that when the bottom long material moves to the left, it'll activate the key. then I have the pistons holding the boxes connected to it on "flip inwards" but i cant get it to work.

I try to pause it once the boxes get at its highest point, then i connect the key switch to the pistons holding the boxes. So theoreticaly once the key switch reaches the key, the next thing the boxes will do is flip inwards. But whenever I press "play" the pistons twitch and start halfway. I still need help lol.

On the switches it sounds like your problem is that you need to set the switch output to "directional".

What you should do is have a mag switch for each of the step/winch areas set to directional and with a large enough radius to move things out of the way in time when the rods come through. You can tweak the radius to make it as close of a call as you like. Then space mag keys along the rods so that when they are extended they keep the mag switches activated. (kind of the opposite of your 2nd illustration)

I'm fairly sure the serpent shrine level from MM used purely timing on the winches for this problem, but I haven't played it in a while so I might be wrong.

Thanks! I updated my picture with the mag switches, but where should I put the mag keys?

And why would I want to keep the mag switches activated after the rods have reached the end? Won't that make the steps try to go back up while the rods are in the way?
