Recommend a Film

Archive: 33 posts

Now, I am unaware if a thread like this exists, but I thought, it would be a good idea.

Now, I am always looking for new, entertaining films that I should see, as I'm sure other are as well. Perhaps a film that came out awhile ago but fell under the radar.

For instance, a friend recommended to me RocknRolla, which I had never heard of but I found to be fantastic. Loved the narrator, and the specific scenes with the two Russian hitmen who just would not give up, truly hilarious.

I recommend it to anyone

Now the idea of this thread it to recommend films you have seen recently that you think we should all watch at one point or another.

If you liked RocknRolla, then perhaps you should check some other Guy Ritchie stuff. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch are both really fun films.

Moon with Sam Rockwell was a fantastic gem from this year, but I don't believe it's out just yet on Blu-ray and DVD. And then there's always FIGHT CLUB...

Sci-fi movie earlier this year way way back in ought-nine called Moon, directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones. A followup is planned and I have no doubt it'll be amazing (a sci-fi "city film" similar to Blade Runner), so hunt this one down for sure.2010-01-04 08:04:00

I don't know if I'm going to be alone with this but I liked GI Joe The Rise of Cobra, is not a movie that went under the radar but I recommend it if you haven't watch it yet, also I liked X-Men Origins: Wolverine but there is a lot of people that didn't like that one, personally I would liked to see more of Gambit since he is my favorite x-men lol

Is District 9 good?

Oh yes. It's awesome.
Definitely worth watching, though the beginning is kind of slow and confusing.

Well the Academy awards are soon to happen, so I have been watching Academy screeners that I have access to.
I am a self confessed movie tragic.

I watched 3 movies yesterday, all of which have yet to be released in Australia.
Just as well, as it's been too hot to do much else.

Up in the Air - George Clooney - quite a emotionally up & down movie for the viewer, what with the subject matter of unemployment and it's effects.
Clooney is as charming and witty as usual, but also adds an underlying pathos to this well crafted movie.

Possibly might get a best screenplay.
Best supporting actress for Vera Farmiga

Invictus - Morgan Freeman - Freeman does an amazing,if understated portrayal as Nelson Mandela in this Clint Eastwood directed movie, the subject matter of how Mandela utilized the South African Springbok rugby union team in the 1995 rugby world cup to help unify the country ,might have limited appeal to the masses, and in truth is not one of Eastwoods best movies, but it certainly is one of Freeman's best performances.

Good chance for best actor for Freeman [I have a very good record for picking the winner of this category]

The Hurt Locker - Jeremy Renner - This movie is centered around a former US Ranger who becomes a team leader in a bomb disposal unit based in Iraq It has a lot of subtle inflections to it, somewhat similar to last years movie Stop Loss in the empathetic handling of the story's characters.
Renner does a superb job at portraying the risk taking troubled sergeant.

Relatively unknown Renner might be giving Morgan Freeman a run for best actor for this.

The last good movie I saw was Zombieland, took me by surprise as I had not been following its progress when in production.

Very entertaining with a great cameo by Bill Murray as himself.

Let's see....

I just saw The Princess and The Frog (call me a little baby) but it was actually pretty good! A solid 8.5/10 for me!

As of movies that have been out for a while I'd recommend all of the Jason Bourne movies:

The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Supremacy
The Bourne Ultimatum

All very great movies!

Armageddon is a really good movie, aswell is all of the Harry Potter films, but seriusly, the books are better. A shame they can't have all details and all the 'stuff' in the films, cause then they would be extremely long! - and they already are lol

Hmm, what more, what more.. The Hangover is also really fun with all kind of weird problems, cause they had a crazy night in Vegas.

Armageddon is a really good movie ...

Looks like someone finally beat me to that movie, haha. Along with that, I highly recommend Independence Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116629/), and I also heard Day After Tomorrow. Those three are incredible.

V for Vendetta. That is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. EVER. I still can't get over how awesome it is, after I've watched it at least 8 times. I showed it to my friends, and I think we've all made a cult. It's that fantastic.

The Hangover was an excellent comedy.

Hmm...

I'm pretty sure you've seen the Dark Knight.

Hmm...

I'm runnin outta ideas. OH! SHERLOCK HOLMES!!

Just watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven this weekend. Had seen the theatrical cut twice before (once for pleasure, once for academic reasons). Scott's cut answers quite a few questions and fills in some holes that were left gaping in the theatrical release.

Overall, I'd rank this one right up there with Gladiator as they're both historical action-type epics that just fall short of greatness. It's not at all historically accurate, but the commentary concerning religion is forever relevant and interesting. Sadly, Orlando Bloom is the weak link here. He's not as bad as Nicolas Cage, but he's no Gary Oldman either...

If you've got a spare 3+ hours, give the Kingdom of Heaven director's cut a shot.
