Top Games of 2009

Archive: 35 posts

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but I haven't found a thread like this yet.

So, what do you think the game of '09 is?

I think it's gotta be Borderlands. Seriously, this game has brought me so much fun. I still haven't beaten zombies, or my second playthrough for my first character for that matter.

My top games of the year would have to be:

1. Borderlands
2. Resident Evil 5
3. LittleBigPlanet
4. inFamous
5. Uncharted 2

Okay, first off, I know LBP was released in 2008, but over half of the content was released in 2009! RE5 released to mediocre reviews, but I absolutely loved it. Oh, and I haven't finished inFamous and Uncharted 2, but so far, inFamous is a blast. Every thing controls so smoothly and I love how the acrobatics mesh with the fighting. Oh, and it's actually pretty hard. Or at least on hard mode. Uncharted 2, to me, isn't as great as everyone says it is. The platforming sections are just frustrating because it's often hard to distinguish between something that's climbable and something that isn't, especially when looking for the treasure, but the shootouts are exciting, the characters are likeable, and there is tons of variety. It's no MGS4, but for a linear game, it is fantastic.

You guys?

LBI!

Nah, but otherwise...

Tied between Uncharted 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum. Uncharted 2 was a blast and only improved on Uncharted in every single way- but Batman was just so unique, FUN, and a great joy to the Dark Knight. I loved every second of playing through it twice and getting all the medals in combat (not so much predator, but hey). The combat is just so fun, especially when you figure out how to get 20x combos easily.

I just hope Batman 2 has some better bosses- Killer Croc was done right although I hate him, but i'd like some more bosses that are more... bossy. Especially Joker. He would have rocked if his fight was more of a chasing through a maze thing, kinda like Killing Joke, methinks... missed opportunity. Ah well.

But yeah, this is favorite games. So

LBP
Uncharted 2
Batman

And I love how I can legitimately say Batman is an awesome game on it's own .

1)Fifa10 - i have had so much playtime out of this, more so than any other game this year.
2)Forza 3 - especially as i race in a league, this game provides some of the best, closest online racing i have ever had.
3)Borderlands- Not so much singleplayer, which i haven't touched, but it is so awesome in multiplayer, i loved it, which surprised me.
4)Left 4 Dead 2 - Wasn't going to buy this, but 2 of my mates on XBL said i should, and i tried it. Holy crap is it addictive! Wasn't expecting it, but Co-Op is just as much fun as the versus modes, all round awesomeness. Needs DLC...
5)Crackdown - Absolutely brilliant, i re-bought it from Games on Demand recently, it's just great.

Yes, all those were on 360, purely because i haven;t bought a PS3 game this year, at least, not that i can remember...

Here's a few of my current favourite games in random order. With a mini review too i guess

Uncharted 2
No other game that i've played has been more immersive or cinematic. It doesn't bring much new as far as gameplay is concerned but the dialogue and acting draws you right in - it's done better than in most movies

Dragon Age
I'm playing through this now and it's pretty the game i thought Oblivion should of been. You're thrown headfirst into an amazing fantasy landscape, if the awesome characters and story don't pull you in then you can at least expect a good amount of time to be spend admiring the scenery!

Infamous
I had tons of fun playing this, it becomes pretty much like a sandbox game but it never loses it's challenge. I won't ruin anything for people that haven't played it, but there's some amazing platforming sections and the more difficult missions where you have to go tactical are really fun.

Disgaea 3
Personally i love HUGE games and this is definatly one of those!
This is good for a lot of the reasons that Patapon was. Other than the gameplay being amazing you get to build up a team from scratch, and they're only as strong as you train them to be. The massive level cap makes it practically limitless and there are a load of seemingly impossible goals to strive for.
It's great seeing your team growing from a few lvl 1 characters to superpowered lvl 9999's fighting through the world of carnage, or wherever you might get to in between

Demon's Souls - Most rewarding game and the first game that actually wants to be a game and not a movie in ages.
Uncharted 2 - Great movie! ^.^
Flower - All the colours missing in 90% of this generations games in one single joyful gem.

in no particular order. because they are all really good.

Uncharted 2
Monster hunter freedom unite
Professor Layton and the Pandoras box/ Diabolical box

I would say LBP PSP but it is too glitchy so it gets an honorable mention.

1. Assassins Creed 2 (How am I the only one who has mentioned this game?????)
2. Borderlands
3. Uncharted 2
4. Lego Indiana Jones 2 (Haha I know, its classic with a friend co-op)
5. MW2, only played this once on co-op missions for like an hour, but its the only other game I thought suitable.

I'll jump on the Assassin's creed 2 bandwagon. Add to it uncharted 2. Both incredible games. But then I run out of games I've played that aren't quite old or little big planet.2009-12-31 11:37:00

It sure is a bummer to be released early in the year and forgotten about, huh, Killzone 2?

I'll go the way of the genre; it's the fairest after all.

Best of 2009:

FPS

Killzone 2: not your typical "run-n-gun" shooter at all. In fact, you won't get away with any of that even on the easiest difficulty. Enter that lovely cover system...

The gameplay - due to the aforementioned cover system - was as intense as anything else on the market. Multiplayer was solid as well, but was doomed from the beginning as it's far from a "twitch shooter" and - in turn - it just wasn't the style people wanted. And then there was that whole debacle about how the control scheme was too unlike that of every other FPS (see Modern Warfare). Along with a few map packs, Guerrilla released a patch for the controls nevertheless as it's what the fans generally wanted.

A single-player campaign that ran around eight hours, had beautiful graphics (not even counting the CG stuff here), a passable storyline, and challenging multiplayer. Again, overlooked as it was released so early this year, but it was a step in the right direction for the usually stale FPS genre.

TPS

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves: I'd love to give this one to Infamous, but it just doesn't compare. Heck, maybe it's not even fair for other developers to be measured by the Naughty Dog scale. Infamous was loads of fun and gave me a tremendous amount of gameplay, but it's not Uncharted 2, the game that had my jaw on the floor and literally gasping as Drake came ever so close to biting it time and time again.

There's really nothing more to be said except that you haven't truly experienced the game until you've played it on an HDTV with the lossless LPCM 5.1/7.1 track blasting through your HT system.

Sports

MLB 09: The Show: I won't go into great detail here as it doesn't seem like too many of you care about the average baseball game. That said, it's far from the average baseball game.

Overall, an in-depth simulation style baseball game that has unlimited playability. Whether you're running through the gauntlet that is "Road to the Show" (create a player and take him from the minor leagues to the major league) or playing "Franchise". Just lots of great stuff here for baseball enthusiasts.

And, as always...

LBP

This title which we love deeply just keeps on giving. It's so great to look back over a year from its release and see the impact it continues to have on the gaming community. It's even nicer to know I - like so many of you - have been here since before launch and know that we were right about what this game could offer on so many levels.

Whether your drug is create or play, LBP has it all. Again, we've said all there is to say about this masterpiece really, but I want to go over something that probably isn't touched on quite enough.

As LBP neared it's release last year, news came out that there were some gameplay elements "missing" from the finished product. Now, we know that it really came down to Mm wanting to get things ironed out on their end rather than shipping a broken product (I'm looking at you, Fallout 3). That said, everyone took it in stride and - here's what I wanted to talk about - managed to simulate these missing elements with features already included in the game. The level of expertise and creativity that goes into these levels truly astounds me. It's remarkable that so many amateur creators have managed to surpass the in-game levels laid out by Mm and they do so with their unbelievable, ingenious originality. This was something I thought I could bring to the community early on, but - as time has revealed - I should just stick to the "play" part...

The game that keeps on giving. There's truly no greater compliment that I can give to a game.

Killzone 2 for sure. It's really unique, with the turrets and all. Sure, the repairgun is a pain to get, but if you do it right it's really easy. I always placed turrets in the lowest floor in Corinth Crossing, on the beams in the middle of the map. It's out of sight, but the turrets hit players really well there :hero:
Not to mention the revolver which just truly kicks *** (I haven't got it unfortunately, but I've played with it at a friend's).
However, I think the saboteur could have been done better. It's annoying that if you get hit the camouflage immediatly goes away. And camo'd saboteurs are just too easy to discover aswell.

And of course Uncharted 2.

I'll add Monster Hunter and Mario Wii to my list too ^^

They're really milking the franchise with Mario but Mario Wii still manages to be just as great as the rest. I'm yet to try the multiplayer features but i can imagine it adds a load to the game. I can't help but feel this is as far as the 2d Mario's will go though.

And Monster Hunter is just extremely rewarding for anyone who wants to put the time in.
There are tons of moments, from getting the sword that you've spent so long getting the materials for, or figuring out a strategy for a tricky monster and finally managing to defeat it.
Nothing in this game is an easy ride, but that just makes everything more rewarding in the longrun

Batman: Arkham Asylum. Absolutely loved this game. Was everything I was hoping it would be and more... the replay value wasn't brilliant but there were enough little extra things to find in the game to keep me happy... and many of them weren't stupid useless collectables either, they were pretty interesting and well done.

Infamous... was good enough... I liked it and finished it but it could have been better. The biggest problem was that will the climbing and stuff was good it was a little too "sticky".

Demon's Souls... love it... I think... only at 4-1 at the minute, I'm pretty sure I'll love it by the time I've finished it though. It's pretty much all I'm playing at the minute.

Uncharted 2... strangely enough I still haven't finished the single player... and I bought it months ago... didn't play anything while I was in college and I've played bits and pieces since the holidays started but just haven't really got back into it. Didn't really get into the multiplayer either though I did really enjoy what I played.

AC2... got it for Christmas, finished the first section and then Demon's Souls took over. Again really enjoyed what I played but not in the mood to play it at the minute.

Weird... I barely played anything this year.

Hmmm..

1. Assassin's Creed 2
Go buy it. Simple as. So much fun.
-Great story
-Amazing visuals
-Combat is awesome
-Side quests galore
-Character is so cool
-You kill a..... (Not ruin it for you)
-The Sandbox is excellent. Florence and Venice are huge... and it's fun to adventure through the countryside and 2 other towns and the villa.

2. Modern Warfare two
Not as much to say as most people have it and don't need to make any sort of persuasion. Story lets it down a little. Multiplayer is untouchable.

Let's see...

Dragon Age (Top of a list that is supposed to be in no order. That's how good it is)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (I may complain about the length, but I loved this game)
Demon's Souls (Showing people that "Nintendo Hard" games are actually good)
inFamous (Played it through twice in the span of two months)

For my money its Lbp... I remember having a few titles to obsess over but once little big planet got in my blueray drive it wont give up its driver seat... I still havent opened Uncharted2, had it for months...

Tell me this you AC2 fans... I played the first to death even through all the monotony... how did the change up the campaign for the second as to not be repetitive?

Thinking my next purchase may be borderlands...

Was I the only one not uber-impressed by Uncharted 2? The shooting was good and we all know about the visuals, but the platforming made me want to headbutt a controller. I could not for the life of me tell what was climbable or not, but maybe it's because I'm just not very smart

Anyway, here's my list, in order.

Assassin's Creed 2
Infamous
Modern Warfare 2
Uncharted 2 (too amazing to leave off, even though it was frustrating)

But I still played LBP the most

Uncharted 2 was definitely one of the highlights of the year, though I wish they'd either make the puzzles harder or just get rid of them altogether. Was a little disappointed in the stealthy museum heist at the beginning, too. The urban warfare level was amazing, though. Made me want to play the first level of MGS 4 again!

Mario Wii is sweet, sweet, platformin' bliss!

Can't believe nobody mentioned Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Those of you with a Wii who like anime-flavoured, arcade-samurai action should totally check this out!

@Rabid-Coot: I totally hear you about Fallout 3 for best 2008 game bought in 2009. I beat that badboy twice in a row, searched every nook and cranny, did every side-mission. What a fantastic experience!

Still must've put the most hours into LBP...

I really hate to say this, but no game really impressed me this year.

I'll agree with some of the choices like Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Arkham Asylum... but nothing impresses me to an amazing degree.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Love this game. Everything is the best. One of my choices for GotY. Story, graphics, multiplayer, acting, EVERYTHING.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Yeah, I think you know why. The SP campaign disappoints a little, but still. The multiplayer is one of the best too. So, yeah.

Batman Arkham Asylum
Yeah, actually pretty good Batman game. Wow, that felt weird saying that. The Batman game is great. Wow, still weird. Yeah, ummm, it does a good job of engaging the player in exciting stealth modes and battles.

Assassin's Creed 2[B]
Great job of getting the capturing various spots in Italy in the game, great SP, open world, combat techniques, and graphics.

Preview of Biggest Games of 2010
[B]Bioshock 2
Much talked about multiplayer. Awesome singleplayer.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Singleplayer a little weird, but the main thing is multiplayer. new maps, squad deathmatches, perks (yeah, I know...), and other things.

Mass Effect 2
Yeah, don't know much about this one. My cousin likes the series and can't wait for the next one.

Yup! That's it!

Dragon Age: Origins

For PS3, mine would be LBP (Just got it New Year's Eve lol)
For 360, I would definitely say Assassin's Creed 2
And for Wii, Animal Crossing: CityFolk (2008 release, I got it in 09)
