Donkey Kong - Preliminary Beta

Archive: 15 posts

Be advised that this is a my first attempt at a playable level in any LBP game, and given the numerous instability issues, it may not be up to par on what to expect from a Donkey Kong Remake or a sophisticated showcase.

Note: This is purely preliminary, a beta of sorts; I managed to take care of the platforms, but they seem kind of crude in my opinion...

ZR,

Have you tried this in play mode?

It looks like everything falls apart when I start the game.

I have tried playing this, everything seemed fine...

EDIT: I've republished the level; try re-downloading it.

I downloaded it and gave it a try, but the only part of the level I can see is empty. The checkpoint is rolling when you spawn, so I'll guess that it was supposed to be attached to something and has fallen. I ran all the way to both sides of the level, and on the left side I did see the bottom of some blocks, but they were way too high up for me to jump onto.

Definitely make sure you select "play level" and try it out before publishing just to make sure everything is working. Also make sure things stay in place when unpausing in Create Mode. Oh, and you should also pick a level icon... I suggest the red barrel - it's under "realistic" in the stickers section of the popit.

Let me know when you've got it fixed and I'll try it again!

Hey zeldarocks,

I'm sure I downloaded the most recent version, and I agree with all the others above. I start at the bottom of the level and see platforms after moving to the left. However, I did play an earlier version where you actually do land on the platforms.

And guess what? I get it! I originally thought you were going to do a more modern interpretation of Donkey Kong with barrel shooting as was done wonderfully on the PS3 version, but now I know you're going more with the retro version of jumping over barrels and climbing incline planes and ladders. I love the concept, and I know it will eventually be a fun minigame, but you have much more work to do. For one, the background is totally off...I think you can get away with the plain background, or perhaps cover the entire backmost thin layer with material and sticker it black. I think it would be interesting if you put pseudo-retro scores at the top too...

For this project to work, I think you have to create one epic looking Donkey Kong wrapping peach around his arm at the very top of the level. I think making him pixelated would be a good idea for creating the retro arcade look. I also think making ladders is imperative. Finally, I agree with Taffey to use the red barrel sticker as an icon and for your barrels that roll down as hazards.

This project excites me, and I hope you can persevere to finish the level...

Keeping an eye out,

I more than willing to finish the level, but I don't understand the whole sticker ladder thing... Also, hoe would I make a pixelated DK? I am a newcomer to create Mode... I was planning on using the actual flaming logs... you think barrels would work?2010-01-01 11:49:00

Use a thin back layer and put a giant black sticker on it - there's your background.

For the ladders, I would suggest using either the "bamboo" or "wooden post" stickers. You can make nice-looking (but non-functional) ladders that way. Alternately, you could create functioning ladders using actual materials, but that's a little more tricky. Still, you should give that a try as well.

Flaming logs are the way to go, but you should glue a thin layer disk on the fronts of them with barrel stickers to make them look better.

Eh.... I've never seen them so I couldn't tell you.

Fix your checkpoint and republish the level so we can all check it out.

Sorry if I was unclear...it was 4 in the morning. Anyways, I was suggesting the functioning, albeit trickier ladder version...although I like the fake sticker idea too. Perhaps you can use both! For the functioning ladder, you can create a one-layer thick rung and alternate between the two thick layers with subsequent rungs so sackboy/girl can layer-switch when s/he jumps up the ladder. You can then attach the rungs using string. Let me know if that was confusing...

Flaming logs are the way to go, but you should glue a thin layer disk on the fronts of them with barrel stickers to make them look better.

I was going to suggest the same thing, although I think an electrified barrel will give a cleaner look. I wouldn't have any problems with flames though...

hoe would I make a pixelated DK?

To get the pixelated look, I would just avoid any curves and stick with the square paint tool for the edges. I think the size of the square "as is" is a bit large, so you would have to shrink the entire figure after you're done. But this was just a suggestion to create the retro arcade feel...you can leave it out if you choose...

I feel a bit intimidated with the task of creating a pixelated DK by hand, I only know the basics of Create Mode, and some of these suggestions are Greek to me being as I am but a newcomer...

Also, I used the 'caution' sticker for the blocks, the black and yellow striped one... You think that would give it a semi-contemporary look?

I think an electrified barrel will give a cleaner look. I wouldn't have any problems with flames though...Electric would be a bit cleaner, yes, but one hit kill logs can get annoying easily. Although the original game's barrels were one hit kill, they were also on fire, so actually either choice has its merits.2010-01-02 00:16:00
