F4F: Cave of Legend [500XP up for grabs!!!]

Archive: 18 posts

Here's aother one from me. My third level after I made LittleBigAutumn and Desirable Trials so if you liked them, hopefully you'll enjoy this new direction I've tried to go in.

This level is based almost entirely off exploration. You're rewarded for looking around and finding secrets (ruins and golden flowers) as well as any extra bubbles I may have hidden in hard to reach places.

It's easy to storm through this level in two minutes if you know where you're going and you don't go off an obvious track. However if you stray off for even a minute, or take the opposite path or see a nice little opening then you could spend ages looking around.
I've put obvious secrets out - the ruins and the golden flowers. There are 7 ruins hidden throughout the level and 3 golden flowers. Finding each of these will give you more score at the end, which leads to the contest......

The top scorer on this level in a weeks time will get 500XP straight from my own pocket. So download it, play it and have a good time exploring.

Hey Coxy224,

What an interesting concept! When creators say "explore," they often just put it there to evoke adventure without actually meaning it. But this level forces one to squeeze through every nook and cranny for those "secrets," and I felt you manipulated the shapes and layers successfully to keep those areas well-hidden.

I liked the counting mechanism at the end that lets players know how much they've uncovered, and I think it's a clever way to promote multiple plays! I didn't understand the jungle concept though--I thought it was a bit out of place.

I also found an area where you can fall out of the game. On the second golden flower, you can jump forward and escape the map.

Overall, I enjoyed searching for those secrets...I still have to find one more!
:star::star::star::star::star: and hearted.

As soon as I read the description, I knew I would love this level. And I wasn't wrong. What an incredible experience!

Like I said many times on this board, Tomb Raider is one of my favourite gaming series, and my levels are heavily influenced by it. One of the best things of Tomb Raider is exploring every corner to find secrets.

And that is exactly what your whole level is about: exploring, with some nice puzzles in the way to reach the goal. You did a great job creating that intrincate caves, most of the paths weren't obvious and I didn't get all the secrets until my third try (or so I thought, because I'm #2 on the score board). Congratulations for mastering the corner editor.

The touch of adding a score board for the secrets was a welcome surprise.

5 stars and hearted.

So awesome. I love this level! I played it a half a dozen times but still couldn't beat Lleonard's score.... *shakes tiny fist at Lleonard* I did manage to find all the secrets, but I'm still shy of the #1 spot by a several hundred points. Must... play... again...

You have put together a very absorbing level that is a blast to explore over and over again. This is the first community level I've played that really gave me the desire to go back and find all the secrets like the story mode levels do. Your platforming is spot on - it's plenty to keep you on your little sacky toes but nothing near making you want to pull your stitching out. The variety of challenges is fantastic, and the corner editing... Wow! As much as I like your other levels, this is miles ahead of them. The mix of white materials with bits of color here and there is great, and your use of stickers is subtle but effective and easy on the eyes. Your scoreboard is masterful! I actually said "Yes!" out loud when I found it the first time.

I really don't have any complaints at all, but I suppose I need to come up with something. Hmm... Perhaps add sounds when you find the hidden areas? You really don't need them, but if you were going to change something I suppose that would be it.

5 stars and hearted easily. You already have a creator heart - no soup for you!! Now if you'll excuse me, I have some scoreboard climbing to take care of.

I didn't understand the jungle concept though--I thought it was a bit out of place.

For some reason I didn't want the level to end in a cave....I was going to have some sort of stoy behind it but I felt that might detract from the level. So yeah it's a random ending.

I also found an area where you can fall out of the game. On the second golden flower, you can jump forward and escape the map
Oh wow, thanks I'll fix that up then.

I really don't have any complaints at all, but I suppose I need to come up with something. Hmm... Perhaps add sounds when you find the hidden areas? You really don't need them, but if you were going to change something I suppose that would be it.

I considered this from the beginning, but I felt it might take away from the atmoshpere so I left it out in the end.

Thanks to everyone who's played it and given their feedback. I wasn't sure how an exploration level would be recieved but I'm very pleased with the responses - thank you all!

I liked the jungle ending - it was a clear indicator that you had reached the end of the level. It gave me a sense of accomplishment to know I had made it out of the caves.

Sounds probably would take away from the atmosphere somewhat. Great level either way!

Ah, once again Coxy, you outdone yourself.

Review
Coxy224 has brought out another level, and this time a lengthy. With stunning visuals and easly one of the best sticker users, Coxy has kept the cave atmosphere alive and very well, and has included a scavenger hunt which will keep you quite busy. With 500XP up for grabs, Coxy has also showed both a giving side, and a smart "play my level" tactic. So, I recommend you play this level, as it is the best level that Coxy created in LBP PSP.

:star::star::star::star::star: and well deserve heart. Wish I can heart you twice, but I can't.

Oh, and I said once not long ago that I love getting the highscore on levels I review, right? Well I did! Yes! Even though my PSP said I played it twice, I actually played it so much, I swear Sackboy was dying from exhaustion! So I finally beat fol1n[US] and boy do I feel great! So congrads to fol1n for the challenge. Now good luck to you all as I wait to see who can beat my "impossible" score.

Peace

Could you make the flowers dissolve cutouts? That dissolve when you grab them? Because then people will know they're secrets( I thought it was decoration at first). Also, I'd put a stack of points in every secret bit so people have a reason to go there. Also the rocket guy can come out it's hole and get stuck which blocks the path bavk to the checkpoint. Put 2 bits of invisible string on the bottom to solve this, also is the rock on top of it made out of dissolve meant to dissolve? It doesn't. There's also a part of the cave made out of paperbag material. There are tons of face stickers on it, which looks ugly. Use vine stickers etc. Instead.2010-01-01 10:33:00

i finally had the time to play this one and i really enjoyed it!
Nice concept and funf to play.
One question: At the End of the cave (above the rocket) there are 3 grabbable circles hanging. What do they do? did i miss something (ok thats 2 questions...)

btw: 5 Stars!

Ah, these are sticker switches, so just sticker them to get them to dissolve. It's just an easier way to get to one of the secrets
