Grid Shifting

Archive: 12 posts

I use the grid system quite alot as it helps keep everything in line so I don't have sticky-outy bits on building and objects.

but sometimes what happens is I will have an object set into the position of the grid, and then when I go to add more materials to it, the grid will have shifted slightly to the left or right, so when I go to add parts, they don't quite line up properly and have small parts which stick out on the object (Which for me (bring a perfectionist) IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING).

If you understand what I am talking about please try to give suggestions or help, if you don't understand, tell me what you don't get and I will try to explain in further detail.

Thanks, Pete.

There's already a thread about this somewhere. I can't find it though. All I do is turn the grid off, move whatever you want to place around a bit, and enter the grid again. That usually fixes it for me! 2009-12-26 16:20:00

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

And oh really, well if there is then I'm sorry, I did have a quick gander to see if there was a similar page but I couldn't find one. I apologise if there already is one, if so then mod please lock to let this thread die or delete it or whatever you moddy mod's have in your mod powers

The grid shift is a known, but very annoying problem. I'm not sure exactly what causes it. Here are the things that I've done to work around it:

If what you are adding is relatively small or simple, I will sometimes just add it, ignoring the imperfect lines it creates, then go in with the corner editor and remove the "excess" that was created, effectively smoothing the lines back out.

Other times, depending on the situation, I will just forget trying to re-align it, and I'll select some material in a block format, with the grid on, and I'll use it to delete (or trim - with the triangle button) the existing shape/wall/edge/etc. Obviously, this is not always practical though, so sometimes...

I'll grab an entire section or object that was once on-grid and has now shifted (with the grid still on) and just move it back and forth, up and down. In many cases this will realign it to the grid. But again, not always practical (and sometimes the shape as a whole no longer fits to the grid, because of unusual objects or corners, or because of resizing), so if all else fails...

I will make a wall or shelf out of dark matter (on-grid), then turn off the grid and select the grid-shifted object(s) and move them, pressing them up against my grid-aligned DM. This usually works, but can be tricky.

Hope this helps!

If you notice a material you are about to place is misaligned, just exit out of your pop-it until you reach the material selection area, then choose the material and shape again, that should fix it.2009-12-26 21:45:00

this is what I do, works ever time. At least most of the time it does

I'll explain what I know: if you create a cube with the grid on and turn it around with the grid on, it would never be non aligned.

but when you add a detail, for example yo cut off from cube a piece smaller then one unity of grid, when you move the whole with grid on the system do not know which part of it must be align with the grid.

advices

1) turn the grid on BEFORE OF SELECTING A SHAPE, not only before of placing it
2) when you have to move on object not builted with the grid, but you want to mantain the same alignment, just surround it with a bigger square builted with the grid and move them togheter

Ooohh... this is a really good idea. I'm going to remember this one. Thank you!

What about mag switches? I put em on a wall using the small grid with spacing, the next day those switches have shifted a little on the side which is sad cause i wanna add more switches to the board and the mis-allignment is really annoying. So do i have to remove n reattach all of them again?

Its about time MM introduces a material with a built in grid on it

I have tried using the graph paper sticker, wood n sponge material with squares on them, doesnt quite do the job for a perfectionist.

Have started to use grid more recently, but built first level without realising it existed, so clearly not essential to creation process. Helps when straight pistons needed, but pain in *** when building objects with irregular contours or placing switches/ bolts in specific places. Also, if needing to relocate 2-way/3-way switches, they cannot be moved until grid turned off.

Grid's not be all and end all. Shifting not major issue IMO.

I don't think the grid shifts. It's fixed to the level area. The object is shifting for some reason. Is it glued to dark matter? (even glued to DM I've seen shift occur when deleting pistons)

I had a few similar issues that i resolved either by gluing the object to dark matter or (in cases where it couldn't be glued to DM) capturing it and placing it in it's own level until the modification was complete then replacing it in the "production" level.
