Does anyone think the thermo might be extended?

I was thinking, and if MM continued to improve their online code, it could increase the capacity for saved data in levels! What do you guys think?2009-12-26 04:06:00

The thermo doesn't represent level size, it represents the limitations of the PS3 hardware. The thermometer isn't some arbitrary limit Mm decided to impose - it is literally a visual representation of the capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Mm did a video (http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/09/24/lbp-tips-special-3-%E2%80%93-the-thermometer/) about it that explains it in more detail.2009-12-26 04:30:00

I'm *pretty certain* some of my early levels take up slightly less thermo now then when I originally created them. So it's probably more accurate to say that the thermo is a visual representation of the limitations of Mm's software running on the PS3 hardware...but it's unlikely we'll see a significant increase. I think the thermo isn't so limiting now...and without it how would I know when my level is done? It would be nice to get some better diagnostics, i.e. see the status of all the individual thermos before you max one.2009-12-26 05:44:00

I still don't understand why water is thermoless, that's outrageous to me.2009-12-26 05:54:00

I see that's where I missed the point. I always thought that it was based on what the LBP servers could handle, not the PS3. My mistake

Oh, don't worry about it! They don't really go into detail about why the limitations are in place, so many, many people end up believing that it's a limit that could be increased if Mm decided to do so. As others have already mentioned, I'm sure they will find ways to refine LBP and lighten the load on the hardware, thus opening up more thermo room, but I highly doubt any changes would be incredibly significant.

This is quite a tough one... But depending on the hardware of the PS3... I think Mm Are doing their best to let you add as much as you can to a level. The thermo may be all the PS3 can take before it.... goes KABOOM!!! Im not sure but maybe if the PS3 were to recive a hardware update.... Im only 13 so dont ask me!2009-12-26 08:28:00

While it may represent hardware capabilities, the software can always be optimised so that the hardware doesn't have to do quite so much work.
So there's always chance it can be improved, even if just by a fraction.

THere is strong evidence of optimisations having taken place at cornish yarg and leerdammer. However, most people are oblivious to these so that should give you an indication of how marginal they are.

Most creators completely misunderstand what the thermometer represents and so don't get anywhere near as much out of it as they could. Look in the tutorials section for the comprehensive thermo guide (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=16840). Once you start to understand the thermometer better you should find you can get a hell of a lot more out of it than you previously thought

I always find it strange that I can load my levels with lights that cause terrible slow down but the thermometer can be barely off the bottom.2009-12-26 11:14:00

It's not really "thermoless" it just doens't show up in the regular thermo.
I reworked an old level of mine (which was running perfectly smooth) but by adding water it runs really slow and has framerate issue's

cheers,

I do believe they have optimized it a little bit. I made a level in January that took up the whole thermo, but recently I was bored so I went into edit mode and noticed there were still a couple bars left. Not much, but an improvement nonetheless.

I don't think we'll see any major improvements, though. It's mostly hardware limitations.

Well, they might manage to improve the thermo after some while, always finding a little thing they can update to make everything better.

Though, unless you cable up two PS3, so they work together, or a something else that exceeds PS3 in working, I don't think we will see any of a major thermo expanding.

We will just have to wait for a LBP2 on PS4 or something...

I think it's impossible to extend the thermometer, but they could lower the amount of thermo stuff takes up by making the code more efficient.

But maybe that's just me fussing over semantics.

I dunno, there's a good couple of inches at the top of the screen they could extend it into
