ReviewBot: "Ninja Madness!"
Archive: 1 post
We were going to rest the ReviewBot until we found a severely underrated level here in the forums, but after stumbling across this gem, we just had to fire the droid up. It's by no means a Sackie shoe-in, but it is a nice little level. http://i46.tinypic.com/eb3l1f.png The level we're reviewing today is Ninja Madness! bu iOni. Though the actual name of the level is Ninja Madness! (with 2 different endings) 3D. But that wouldn't really catch on, now would it? http://i49.tinypic.com/157m0dv.jpg Anyway, what caught the team's attention is the crispness of the visuals. The level is a blatant love letter to the old Japanese paintings we've seen on the background of our favorite anime. The simplicity of it is wonderful as well; who needs glitches when you have talent like this? http://i46.tinypic.com/2dr6vxd.jpg What really amazed us is the use of fire as a scenic piece. It's also rather simple as well; the flame blocks are made thin and inserted between the floors so that the plumes will still reach up but be absolutely harmless. It's a really nice technique for those just starting off. http://i46.tinypic.com/zo86dj.jpg And now for the white, ugly elephant in the room; the gameplay. At first it's a nice little puzzler, then everything just seems to be more of a film than a game level. It's nice and everything, but on a level like this, it would help if the difficulty was raised jut a bar or two. And for the boss, it jumps way too high. Either attach the camera on the boss so the camera moves with it, or lower the jump so players don't have to rely on sheer luck to finish. What also disappointed me is the presentation in some areas. For example; when giving the player the choice, instead of diagrams, use the narrative to how the player, like a voice from the heavens telling the player that the choice is theirs. It breaks the whole atmosphere if you have to read something from an instruction manual. Overall, it's a nice, chunky piece of eye candy, but a bit hollow. The gameplay could be a bit more exciting, or if this was simply a visual level, extend the story. :star::star::star: Here at G-Corp, we support the community. Therefore, we think it may be detrimental to the community if we only review and show levels submitted by members of the forums. We want to show that not all wonderful creators come from secluded, relatively unknown forums, and these creators give as much of themselves as the creators we talk to everyday. If we simply reviewed and criticized levels that we see on forums, then these talented solo artists may lose hope and become another H4Her.
