Waters way to bouyant

Archive: 12 posts

Does anyone else find that waters to bouyant? For example a small cube of metal (about 2 small grid squares) should, in my opinion sink, however it floats to the top when dropped in water. Also materials like ploysterien bounce on the water as if it were jelly, you need massive amounts of it just to get it slightly submerged.2009-12-24 18:22:00

Well it really depends on what kind of metal you use. Different types have different properties.

I don't really feel it's too bouyant. Also note that in the LBP universe everything is tiny. When you think about how small the objects are that you're placing in the world, it makes sense.

All materials under the metal catergory are the same arnt they?

I just feel that even though waters great, its a bit 'light' and not fully 'fleshed out' with regards to the bouyancy.

be happy for what you have. MM put in alot of work in water, everything happends for a reson.
i like the way it is

I really do agree. You can't so much as jump on most boats without them swirling up and down madly. 2009-12-27 02:54:00

The games all a bit floaty, otherwise you wouldn't be able o lift huge chunks of metal, Or jump quite as well. Or drag things, for that matter 2009-12-27 10:43:00

Well it really depends on what kind of metal you use. Different types have different properties.

All the metal have the same properties, as does tinfoil, but that's clearly just in the wrong section. The all sink as well, regardless of size - I'm not sure what the OP is talking about metal floating for.

This is nothing to do with the properties of water. it's to do with the existing properties of materials. IRL metal is around 20 times denser than wood, in LBP it is twice as dense. The effective density of water had to go somewhere in between those so that wood floats and metal sinks.

If they made the water less dense to make metal sink faster, then wood would also sink, and people would moan about that.

Also materials like ploysterien bounce on the water as if it were jelly, you need massive amounts of it just to get it slightly submerged.

Similarly, polystyrene is only 1/10th the density of wood, so it's going to float very high. Although, I just ran off to test what real polystyrene does in real water... It sits on the surface, barely submerged, so this one's actually quite accurate!

Look, the water physics does behave like real water physics and it's perfectly consistant. It just takes a little getting used to and remember that the oddities of what floats and what sinks are simply based on the properties that these materials had since the game was released. It's not a "water is too bouyant" issue, it's that the phyics of LBP have always been skewwed and you've only just noticed that.

It's all with gameplay in mind really
Would you rather they made it incredibly difficult to make things float for the sake of realism?

And remember how small everything is in LBP

Well its just that i think things should be more heavier than they currently are. But, i cant really complain, water is after all just...awesome.

I think it's too buoyant too. When I was just messing around with it I made an object that was half sponge and half stone. I moved it to the bottom of my ocean and expected it to float to the top and mabey leave the water a little but it shot up into the air really high and I was like wtf.2009-12-29 06:26:00

I recall that someone once said, Media Molecule made the games physics to be realistic, but they were tweaked just enough so it was fun.2009-12-29 06:28:00

If I remember correctly, a Sackperson is only 8 centimeters high.
LOL, our Sackpersons are so tiny!
