The "Free Water" Situation

Archive: 23 posts

There is a certain level published by thi766 that contains only water. No switches/sensors from the PotC pack. For some strange reason, users who do not own the pack can copy and edit the level. At first, it seems logical. You can't edit the water in any way without the appropriate tools. If any of those tools were in the level, it wouldn't be editable. But since they aren't it adheres to MM's policy of "Playing is free, creating is not". So in this sense, editing the water level isn't any different than simply playing a level with water because in both cases you cannot edit the water and its properties, only play with it.

Now here's where the wrench in the works comes in. Despite the above scenario, anyone without the PotC pack can place any non-PotC objects, materials, and so forth, being theoretically able to create a level around the existing water. At first I was thinking "Yeah right, you can't edit the level without the pack," but I'm shocked that you can actually create a level around the water for free, although you can't edit the water in any way.

So, is this really "free water"? I'd say so, but to a limited extent since you can't use the tools. What do you guys think about this? Did MM make a screw-up here?

Yeah, this was an oversight on Mm's part. The "payment-restriction" is obviously not something we were able to test in beta, and it looks like they missed a pretty crucial little tidbit.

They'll figure it out and patch it out in the next update I'd be willing to bet.

But if you ask me, I think water should be available to all creators everywhere for free, similar to the Creator Pack that came out a while back. I understand if you want to charge for the PIrates pack - charge for the pirates pack - but water should be free anyway. So I say, glitch away. Glitch away!

Of course, in the short term all this really means is even MORE crap being published.

Actually, it's a viral level, so I think thi766 just copied and republished it. But it's an easy name to remember, that's why I brought him up. 2009-12-23 19:55:00

Well, it's the same thing as if you create around a level that was copyable and had paintinators objects in it.

You pay for the LIBERTY to use them more than "any use". It's the same with anything else really, same rule. I could preserve stickers, materials, anything really.

You should pay for the POTC pack. This and the MGS pack are like the only DLC packs worth your money in the whole PSN store... .

This "other half"... what, is it the return of the Krakken?! My best intentions is we should leave this "Krakken" in its cage. Give it some cheese or something (lol, cheese), then turn our backs and run.2009-12-23 20:10:00

You can't edit levels with water if you don't have it i tried before water came out in the UK and it said that i need the pirates of the carribbean pack to edit the level and took me too play mode...2009-12-23 20:54:00

The level you were trying to edit contained the water tools. Right now you can build in a level with water only, no switches/sensors or anything else from the PotC pack.2009-12-23 20:58:00

I was playing with water with one of my friends from England before it came out in the US. I asked him if we could play the levels and he told me he didn't buy them. Apparently, there's some issue with the tutorial levels not locking objects to DLC owners...
Yeah... Pretty big issue.

Great job, ARD! Now I really want to know what he said.

I think it's kinda messed up to take advantage of this, but it's the internet. If there's a way you can get this for free, people are going to find out and use it. Me, I'm going to actually buy the PotC pack. I'm still waiting for someone to release a good level with water implemented nicely.

ok i was going to buy the potc pak. butt.. it turns out that i allredy have water in the tools popit. its on the very right where the fog and the color correction and stuff is.

my hypothesis on how i got the free water.
is to find someone with the water pack and play all 5 levels. you may not be able to use the tools of the objects. but in the tool menu there is an option to adjust water color. water waves. water level. and change the amount of sparkels or whatever.

i dont know how i got exactley. but i got it for free. this may be a way to get it. so you might want to get on it!

Even if you did get it free, I'd still buy the pack. It comes with many awesome materials and epic music. And a few other neat things.2009-12-24 10:30:00

At such a limited scale, I don't think this is much of a problem.

It's like someone capturing a paintball as an object, not a paintinator powerup, or a paint switch, just a paintball.

I really don't see it as much of a problem. These guys are going to be very limited and there are other ways to get "free water".
