People have no Patience!

I'm sick of my levels getting crappy rating because YOU can't complete it.
Just because you gotta use some braincells to complete a level doesn't mean you are authorized to put crappy ratings!
Why a good level must get 1-2 stars just because people want everything handed to them?
Go play "OMGWALLAZORZ 40 JUMPZ OF DEAHT" (ironically, these levels are very easy) if you want easy levels, there's something called challenge, ya know?
The rating is the overall quality of the level, not the difficulty!

I get crappy ratings just because i like to do challenging (they are not that hard either, people are just lazy!) levels, this is really boring!

The mass is forced to rate all the levels they play so of course this will happen. It's just how badly designed the game is. You'll have to cope with this.

I personally make harder levels than what the masses expect and also levels that are more niche and particular. I still to find an audience (especially here on this forum). THERE ARE players who wants a challenge out there. It's just that they aren't the majority.

I suggest you publish your hard levels more during the late evening and the night. There seem to be less kids at that time and your ratings will suffer less. Also, you might want to bunch up with people at the launch of your level and you rate it 5 stars together so it renders it less spamming prone.
Because reality is that more people speed through the rating and simply gives you the number of stars that appears by default. Therefore, when your level is rated 3 stars, it will receive ALOT of 3 stars because people aren't changing the rating unless they were really deceived or frustrated.

I know the feeling... just finished my level, which got bad rating, because it's
kinda hard. Most of the players are so simple-minded. Many levels happen to
get bad rating no matter how good they are, If you actually have to use your
brains to get further, rather than just jumping forward like brainless monkey.

There's a term for these people, TC. They're called ragequitters. Ragequitting is all the rage these days (haha, unintentional pun). The only real advice I can give you is not to let them get to you.2009-12-22 19:42:00

Many who play LBP are young or non-gamers, OR even don't care about ratings and just leave it at the default rating when they leave the level. LBP attracts quite a few of them. I've been able to bypass quite a few by people from this site playing them.

It's the way its going to be unless MM adds more level genre and difficulty abilities to steer people towards the right types of levels.

Before I became a member here at LBPC all my efforts were 4 star and 'beautiful'. After I became a member and reached a slightly-- and i do mean slightly --larger audience I can't seem to achieve greater than 3 stars for the most part...

Now to some degree I accept this as I'm dealing with a more demanding audience, savy? But my robot 'Vincent' for Wex's competition is three stars! presumeably the raters have all been primarily drawn from this site... I love this robot... It may not have been what Wex was looking for but for the criteria: made of dissolve, fires plasma, 1 layer thick, 1 layer thin. Its 5 stars! Definitely FOUR! I mean I only know a handful of people on LBPc who could have done something akin to it...

I wouldn't put to much faith in the ratings... I'm hoping I haven't deluded myself... but I don't think even the people around here care very much anymore.

Unless 'Vincent" was rated comparatively... that could be a possible why.

i have a series of... lets say "long" levels. 'Mythicos' it has recieved criticism at all angles for being too long and "storyish" i LIKE MY LEVELS STORYISH!! thats how i meant it to be, so dont comment on its storyishness as though i didnt mean to put it there. go play something by RUSSELSMUSCLES if you cant handle a little creativity and storyline!!2009-12-23 02:46:00

Part of that I think is generational Gravel. Vincent reminds us "oldies" of his inspiration. Kids - not so much

Happens to me too, I just dumbed down my recent level to an insanely stupid level except the boss and it's got 2 completions and still tagged frustrating. Very hard to find people that are actually willing to try a difficult level, unless you're a well knwon author already.2009-12-23 05:33:00

fires plasma

But I tried my best D=

Yeah, those kids who give low rating becuase they can't complete a level are really annoying. I know of some excellent levels that have about 3* because some people can't finish them.

Most kids on the LBP community expect everything to run smoothly for them, they always put themselves first, and the creator second. They do not care about how much work was put into the level, they only care for who they think is number 1.

Just ignore them. Believe me, one of my levels got played by one of these, "ragequitters". My level got tagged "lousy"!

Saying that people suck and are small-minded because they don't like your level (for whatever reason), is rather... small-minded. This isn't about patience, a lot of people simply don't enjoy difficult / challenging levels.

Out of curiousity, what are you guys doing to market your levels to an appropriate audience? In addition are you republishing, and if so when are you republishing and how often? If you are making levels that are not mainstream levels and then throwing them out without any consideration for who might be playing them, then they are gonna get played by the wrong people and this will be reflected in your ratings. I don't agree with people downrating out of rage, or for kicks or any form of non-objective rating, but it's gonna happen. I also don't agree with the way the game lumps all levels together, but that is the way it is. You need to be pro-active about dealing with the scenario, rather than just lashing out and moaning about it. Hate me for saying it if you want, but be honest, this thread is worthless and will achieve nothing if all you intend to do is complain.

@gravel, I dunno about your case and I'm not really referring to that, more to the difficult levels as per the OP.

Well, there's little i can do. If people like easy levels, then go play those. But at least don't give 1 star at my level!2009-12-24 12:25:00

But that's what I'm saying... we all know it's wrong, but it's still gonna happen! But simply moaning is like shouting at the sky for raining on you. You can't stop the rain, but you could get an umbrella!

There is plenty you can do, release strategies, timing your publishing, level naming and considering how you promote the level. That's what I mean by being proactive.

I hate bad layer switching and I hate hard and challenging levels. I prefer easy levels with good gameplay.2009-12-24 14:37:00

When it comes to long levels. It is not necessary that they give it bad ratings because it is to long. Maybe because it doesn't keep the intrest allive ? When it comes to story. A good story does not make a level and it is extremly hard to make a story that ppl will actually care about in lbp for some reason.

A good idea would be to have the story telling optional. have some logs like in bioshock were players can rush trough our read the story. When it comes to difficulty. If you want to make a difficult level make a survival level. Because players are very unlikely to get frustrated over dying when they know they will sooner or later die. And you can make it insane and so.

Or have some kind of highscore challenge like a race ( that is actually challenging but not frustrating) Even the simpliest thing becomes impossibel if you are compeating with thousands of other players. This is what makes survival levels, The desire to reach the top of the scoreboard.

It is easy to make a hard level, It is extremly hard to make a level with a good difficulty level for a wider range while still making it challenging. And it is even harder to make a hard level that isnt frustrating for the whide masses.
