Why water will suck

Archive: 15 posts

Ok, so we are all excited about water right? I can't exactly say I'm not. Yesterday, I was excited to see that it is coming out today, the 22nd of November. However, then I looked at MM's website, and it clearly shows you how limited water is as an object. Here is the site link, scroll down to the very bottom, and click on the questions.

If you can't really be bothered to go there, here are some of the badd things water CANNOT do:

Water cannot be poured, carried or placed as a material, it is a GLOBAL OBJECT (means it is consistent throughout your level from how you tweak it. Sorry guys, no waterslides, pools, etc. can be made.

But,

WATER CAN BE TWEAKED WITH THESE OPTIONS:

Waves - Choose between as still as a lake or a rolling ocean

Water Colour - Choose the colour of the water

Water Murkiness - Choose how murky you want the water to be

Water Bits - Choose how much confetti you want in your water

Additionally there are some tools in the Tools Bag that can be placed within a level that can be used to interact with water.

Global Water Object - Allows you to change the water settings in different parts of the level.

Scuba Gear - Allows Sackboy to breath Underwater

Bubble Machine - Emits bubbles of air to help you survive underwater

Water Switch - A switch that activates when submerged in water.

So it depends, I'm kinda dissapointed because I wanted to be able to physically move water around and stuff, but oh well.

Maybe this is the first step to water, and there is more to come? I don't know.

This has been posted in SO many threads already, and as its been said there being able to pour water etc would have a ridiculous strain on the game engine. Please search other relevant threads before posting

But regarding your opinion that water will suck... we'll see. If you ask me, the tools are only limited by the creativity of those who use them, I expect to see a lot of new takes on LBP levels with the addition of water.

Maybe what you should have done is watch the initial video from aaaages ago, that pretty much let us all know what to expect. That way you wouldn't have disappointed yourself by imagining features that weren't coming. As someone who's actually played with the water extensively, I can tell you it doesn't suck in the slightest. It's awesome. You just need a little imagination is all

How very, very true this is.

Edit - I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but as BV says, this has been covered over and over again. We basically knew it before the beta started, or at least had strong suspisions at that point. And you're also passing very negative judgement before even taking the time to look at the tools available.

Was just about to post that myself. Not sure why so many people made assumptions about it when right from the start there was a video almost proving them wrong.

The sad thing is that over these next few days I reckon there'll be a lot of hate towards Mm for not making water the way everyone wanted, when as you way, everybody disspointed themselves by expecting too much.

With any luck MM are strong enough to not let it get them down. They had this in the beta too, but they've also seen some of the incredible creations from the beta using the water features, so they know how well water can capture the imagination of the community. It'll die down once people start producing awesome water levels and everyone realises how wrong they were 2009-12-22 10:29:00

Well if anything, players have been given warning. MM has made it very clear with various trailers and information about how water will function. It may not function entirely as people want, but its a new feature, honestly why complain?

And even then, things that people wanted to do aren't always impossible. Wanted to fill up a pool with water? Just make the pool dip down below sea level. Want to make a submarine? Just put a bubble machine in your vehile so sackboy doesn't run out of air. You may not be able to fill up a cup whenever you like, but it still opens up a vast ocean of possibilities.

Whoops! Sorry guys, completely forgot to search for this before. Will do next time

To be honest, I am really just saying what I saw, and I had in mind that water is still going to be a huge breakthrough in little big planet, it's going to be great.

Sorry for wasting time with another water post!

By the way though, I just checked to see if it is out yet. Does anyone know what time it probably will be released? Can't wait!

I played a level where a guy was emitting bubbles up through the water near his scoreboard. It created a rain / waterfall effect. I'm sure we'll see more of that...2009-12-22 11:56:00

Well, you're not along as people that will burst their bubble and come back into reality.

It's not liquid, it's a water level. And it's been known since day one for people how paid attention and didn't themselve slide into could pink candy world of dreams.

Seriously though, I think Media Molecule should have been more clear because "water" is a pretty wide and vague term. They didn't explain stuff at all and many people will realise that it's not liquid.

However, have you notice that there's like NO game with real liquids? This is for a reason. Calculating such physics is EXTREMELY extensive and hard. There's like no engines out there truly capable of pushing this much of calculation and the PS3 and 360 will have a hard time doing it anyways. There is however some middleware business doing an engine for real liquids called "Hydrophobia" (or is it the name of their game?).

But yeah, real water will be common only next gen, sorry. Also, the LBP engine is FAR from being able to handle it anyways, don't even dream of it. It's the (maybe sad) reality.

PixelJunk Shooter does a pretty good job. Admittedly only in 2D, but still. 2009-12-22 14:28:00

indeed, i love the water in shooter aswell.
Actually i thought that the hydropobia game (with a water engine that looks pretty realistic) was developed for current gen consoles and pc's, i could be wrong though, the whole thing seems to be a bit of a mystery... on the other hand, i kind of refuse to believe that a machine capable of doing more then 200 gflops couldn't simulate somekind of fluid...

cheers,

Water is a wonderful new mechanic. Utilize it for what it is rather than being depressed on what it is not. I think you will be much happier.

..and as they said this really is a repeat thread, but you are new here and no biggie and thanks for the apology. Perhaps the mods can merge this with one of the others and then all things will be happy again. LOL!

Well that's the thing. It's completely different because it's 2D. Doesn't take 1/1000 of what's needed to make 3D one.
