F4F: Super Duper Sack Jump!: A LBP PSP Mini-Game

Archive: 11 posts

One of my best levels in LBP PSP to date. It's a mini-game perfect for those who need a quick dose of fun! You get 4 tries before the game ends. So feedback please, and I'll feedback your levels, hence feedback-for-feedback (F4F). Screenshots coming soon. 2009-12-21 18:15:00

Nice! I had fun with this one. This level is built solid and everything works perfectly. I like your use of event-counting logic. The visuals are simple but enjoyable and fitting to the nature of the level.

Some people may not like spinning/flinging types of game mechanics, but I do. I have a prototype level on my PS3 My Moon I made a while ago that is very similar, so I can appreciate the fine-tuning that goes into something like this. It plays very well and I find it quite fun. I'm going to keep this on my PSP at least as long as it takes me to crack the top score.

As far as improvements go, I'd say you could add some more visual interest to the level. A few stickers here and there is really all you need. Also, landing in the chutes seemed a little uneventful... I like your use of the different crowd sounds - definitely keep those in there. You may want to add a few additional sounds here and there like clunks, boings, or maybe some xylophone sounds. The last thing I noticed is that the scoreboard area is a little rough around the edges. Corner editing around the scoreboard is a major pain, so I can appreciate the effort that you took to try and clean it up.

Regardless, this is a very fun mini-game level. 4 stars and a heart! I gave you an author heart as well, because I like all of your levels. More mini-games please!

As for F4F, you've already played my other two PSP levels, so I figure we're even.

Edit: Just noticed that you reviewed Apollo 13.5, so I think I owe you one now.

You don't owe me anything, that statement above just did it!

I couldn't corner edit the scoreboard more because the editer won't pick up the material. Also, the sound effects thing is a great idea! I'll see if I can add visuals to, so I think you might want to re-download it soon.

Finally, I had a goose chase when messing around with different ideas on how to make that "tries counter" mechanism, so thanks for the comment! So overall, thanks for you're review, and thanks for you levels.

P.S. I think I did wonders in my "Buy LBP PS3 Box".

P.S. I think I did wonders in my "Buy LBP PS3 Box". You did do wonders with that! I can't believe I didn't mention that before... Very cool - I loved it. My 3rd or 4th play of your level was actually just so I could study the box a little. 2009-12-21 22:43:00

Hey CyberSora,

Yay, I'm currently ranked 2nd...right after you! But I have a sinking feeling that will be beaten really soon. I too love flinging my sackboy around, and it was a simple and enjoyable minigame that just made you want to shout "Wee!" everytime you let go.

The fun factor is there, but I agree with Taffey's comments about the potential for making it more beautiful: a few stickers wouldn't hurt, right? And I think I found a way to cheat. I somehow landed on one of the triangles, right where it meets the cardboard, and was able to jump to the next chute despite its slipperiness for a higher score. And once, I accidentally fell back on the lift, and one of my tries disappeared

I loved the ending, and I thought it was a clever and funny way to advertise the PS3 version.

For making me say "Wee!" but also imagining its full potential, I gave it 4 stars....for now. I also hearted you and the level.

Wee!,

Thanks! And I quite understand the level not being "pretty" enough, but sadly, when I went to edit it, the "Save Bug" kept moving around the counting mechanism, so I couldn't add the stickers and other eye candies.

Overall, though, you falling in the pit by accident is nothing serious. I mention in one of the magic mouths that if you want to end the game early, just fall down the pit until your tries dissapear. So other than that, thanks for getting second place!

Downloaded this one for a long journey and I've had fun playing it. It's had quite a few plays from me, but the best I could manage was a 6, 7, 6, 6 which I thought was good.

I loved the idea of flinging you sackboy, and it was actually harder than it looks, actually requiring some skill. I thought it was wierd that the bolt wasn't exactly in the middle, which kinda ruined it for me. Other than that though it was good idea and well executed.

Ya, I hate the bug that keeps moving the bolt around. I aim at the middle, but it automatically goes off center.2009-12-24 03:14:00

Aesthetically speaking, the off-center motor bolt was awkward, but in practice, it actually made the gameplay more exciting for me. I thought strategy was more elaborate this way because I found out that grabbing the longer radius (if that makes sense) launched you further than the shorter one. Thus, not only would you have to time when you had to let go, but also plan where to grab to get the maximum fling.

In fact, it never even occurred to me that the off-center bolt might have been unintentional. If it was a mistake, it was a happy one. I say don't change a thing.2009-12-24 06:40:00

Wow, all of you wanted that bug to keep it off center? Hmm...
