About Advertising: A general discussion

Archive: 10 posts

Hello All,

I'm creating this thread to hear what others think about the act of "Advertising" in LBP, and to see if others agree or disagree with my opinions. That is, posting a short and polite add on another level. This thread is meant to be a discussion only, as I want to hear what others have to say. So please, no flaming, trolling, etc.

What is advertising?

Advertising is a way of getting others to play your levels. Most creators prefer not to advertise, because of the bad reputation that follows advertisements. A "good" advertisement is a post on a level that quickly states the level you are advertising, and a a polite request to play it. A "bad" advertisement is a rude, awkward and blunt statement demanding plays, and is often followed by a "H4H" or something else along these lines.

The "Pros" of advertising

Advertising is a way for lesser known creators to get their levels out there. It lets levels that would otherwise never be played, get played. This benefits the creator.

Advertising is also a way of leading others to a level you think they will enjoy. We all have seen the endless bomb survival missions, and races that are consistently on page 1 of cool levels. The point here, is that it can be hard to find good levels to play without the help of a great site such as LBPC. This lets others who would have no way of finding other levels find good levels, enjoy them, perhaps even inspire them. This is beneficial to the community. I have personally followed advertisements to levels that have been absolutely great, which i would have never known about otherwise.

The "Cons" of advertising

Advertising can be looked at as a cheap or lazy way of getting plays. It takes up space on other peoples levels, where they would normally receive feedback on that level. The creator will have to filter through these advertisements to get to true feedback, and once again, without the help of a site like LBPC, it can be difficult to get good feedback on your levels. Advertising can only make this harder.

Conclusion

In my opinion, advertising does more good then it does bad.it allows creators to be seen, and allows players to enjoy levels they would have no idea existed. Another, more arrogant, point is that "feedback" recieved in the comments section on levels often does not have enough context to help. even without advertisements, the feedback received in the comments section is very minimal, often just stating if the level was good or not, and not giving any helpful hints for the future. Personally I don't mind advertisements on my levels.

Hopefully this thread has given you all some insight into what advertising is, how it is helpful, how it is harmful, and what else can be done. Lets hear your thoughts on the matter!

Seems that even you don't really think it's a such good idea since you subconsciously called it a "threat" twice instead of "thread".

I really don't see how this works...only the people leaving comments will see your blatant advert...don't know how many will actually follow it to your level. And if it's a popular level it's just going to scroll off the bottom quickly...even less people will keep hitting <next> to read other people's comments.

Don't do it...it's just annoying to the level creator. I suppose it's ok if you actually leave positive feedback and then suggest a level of yours if you think it would have similar appeal to the level you're reviewing...seems pretty dubious however...

Lol thanks for pointing out those typos. they're fixed now.

You're right Fullofwin, that posting feedback followed by a level advertisement is dubious and sneaky. I don't that's any different from a simple advertisement itself.

I think you should only add advertising as a last minuete (<spelling? I can never spell that word :blush after feedback.

Like: This is a good level, I really enjoyed it. Please play mine.

Instead of: Good. PLEASE PLAY MY LEVELS I MAKE THE COLLECTOR VS TEST SUBJECT.

Or: Please play my levels.

Otherwise it becomes annoying from the creator, especially if you do it over and over again.

I'm against it in every way possible.

Even if someone asks in the politest way possible, it's still annoying. It's my level and I want to read the comments to see what people think about my level, not to see a list of other levels to play. Even if someone leaves some nice feedback and then adds a quick "Could you please play my level?" at the end, I still find it annoying, because it gives me the impression that they're only saying nice things so I'll play their level. Which obviously may not be the case, but it's how I see it.

I was much more likely to take a look at someone's levels if they left good feedback and didn't advertise.

I am against it. I think it is horribly tacky to be honest.. What's worse is where you see flame wars between several people on a level comments. What are they thinking??? Be respectful and take it to PM's!

I feel the comments on a level are for the level feedback and to the creator, not for an add to play levels. I ignore them for the most part and sometimes delete them if there are several in a row that are repeats.

Folks should post their levels here on LBPC and take advantage of the F4F system and be proactive in it's use. Go out and play other F4F levels and have them play your's for their F4F agreement.

A good way to go about it is to compliment their level, make a suggestion, or something along those lines, this generally makes the author want to check out your levels. I know I usually look the levels of those who leave good comments about my levels.2009-12-21 19:53:00

So by advertising you mean posting comments on levels?

Well, that would have been a good idea but since you can post a comment without having played the level, it becomes a bad idea in my opinion. The comment section is in fact meant to be for receiving feedback. Now what happens in the game now, since its badly designed, is people using the comment only for begging their stuff to be played or getting their trophies. You comment section automatically become a spam box because people simply go into cool levels, click on the levels of the first page and leave comments. This without playing any levels. It's bad.

The only thing I like to do (and that it proves the person played your level) is when they come up with something interesting like "I see you like exploration levels. I made a similar level named X if you want to try." Sometimes, since there's no categorisation of levels in the game, it's hard to find a certain type of level you wish to play. So sometimes I will leave this type of comment in some people levels. You know, when I realise they are looking for levels like the ones I do. Otherwise, I would not ask to play my levels in the comment sections. It's for feedback.

Lastly, I know its not intuitive for many people (badly designed game here again) but when someone leaves feedback in your comments, you can click on his name and see his profile and levels. This is the intended way I can understand that we are supposed to use this comment feature: People leave feedback, author clicks on their name, play the levels, receives feedback. Its basically like the F4F system we have here in the forum.

I'm sorry, you call it advertising, I call it spam. What you describe is ignorant, inconsiderate, disrespectful and rude, as far as I am concerned.

Just leave feedback. Any genuine comments or feedback and I will play your stuff. Spam me and I'll ignore you.

Like RTM said, its spam to me.

If i get advertisements on my levels, i'll delete them with the H4H comments. Advertising is only acceptable if it actually has any RELEVANCE. If i made a level about flamethrowing chickens, and ARD told me that i might be interested in seeing the one he made, i might actually check it out. Similarly if they actually leave some feedback i'd be more inclined to return the favor. Comments like the "play my level plz" aren't going to get you anywhere, but "I really liked the way you designed that flamethrower, I also made one would you mind taking a look at it?" actually might.
