Euphoric Physics

Archive: 55 posts

After much frustration I finally managed to get my first PSP level put together. It's entitled "Euphoric Physics". It is based on a level I worked on in the beta, but unfortunately never got a chance to finish. The basic idea for the level was to have all of the obstacles be physics based, only using gears and homemade pistons. I hope everyone enjoys it, it was certainly a blast to make!

Awesome. Really liked the visuals. Very Mm's intro level, which I've never actually seen anyone try and do before so that's cool.

The gameplay is really interesting when you consider how all the mechanics are working and such. Some really fun stuff in there.

Only problem is that up until near the end of the level there is a massive frame rate drop, and I think it takes away from the level quite a bit

However, although it kind of tarnishes the experience a little, I can still appreciate it for what it is and for that, 5 stars without question

Thanks Jack! I've noticed the framerate issues and have tried to fix it, but unfortunately to no prevail. I'll keep on working on it though, thanks for your feedback. 2009-12-21 02:36:00

Alrighty then - played it and it's cool!

Nice use of the pink and blue theme. Visually it's interesting. Ecletic and interesting.

The thing I really like is your experimentation with how certain combinations of movement affect things. It feels like a giant experiment. I think you were going for that kind of feeling based on the stickers you had with the graph paper - like a rocket scientist or physicist playing with Newton's laws.

It's more fun to figure out what's affecting what than to play imo but that's not a bad thing. I'd still rate it 5 stars and heart it

Darn it, I wanted to be the first to reply but I was skyping when you messaged me FULLGORR

Anyway, I had a blast playing the level. My wife was looking over my shoulder as I played it and she was commenting on how she loved everything.

I was going to mention the frame rate issue as well. I had the problem going on for the entire level, not just the start. That really is too bad, but I'm glad you did everything with the level that you did anyway. Without all the rotating objects, it just wouldn't have been nearly as good.

Hey Fullgorr,

What an impressive level! I guess the slow frame rate was merely the PSP succumbing to your superior skill and creativity...

Like others have mentioned, the visuals were impeccable, but I think the essence of this level lies on the technicalities. I love the gear motif and how you incorporated them into the platforming and gameplay mechanisms rather than just decorations. The lag was a shame, but the genius you showed more than made up for it.

Holy sh... uh, stuffing. Epic physics awesomeness here - it boggles the mind how you even came up with this stuff. How you even got everything to work together at the same time is crazy - glitch fixing must have been a major task. This is easily the most technically impressive level I've seen on the PSP yet.

I love the visuals. Everything from the material choices, stickers, corner edited shapes, to the camera angles is excellent. You've got just enough sounds in there to really bring everything to life without overdoing it. Great choice on the music as well.

Everyone here has mentioned the slowdown, and of course that's my gripe as well. This is such an achievement that I really can't fault you for it at all... Level optimization is something that will take us all a while to figure out. The only thing I can think of is to add proximity switches to all of your moving bits - assuming you haven't done that already that is. There isn't much to be done with regards to bounding box issues just based on the nature of the level, so I'd consider that a non-factor.

5 stars, hearted, creator heart without question.

I played this level, and I was very impressed.

It is unfortunate that there is a slowdown issue, but I think it's because you have too many moving parts off-screen. As Taffey has wisely suggested, putting proximity switches so that the emitters and motor bolts are only "on" while Sackboy is on-screen should help alleviate the issue. If you already do so, you could always lower the radius, as it seemed to me that objects continued to move about even at the very edges of the screen.

Regardless of the slowdown, this was well worth :star::star::star::star::star: and a ♥. Great stuff!

I really appreciate everyone's feedback and compliments! I took some of your suggestions and republished it. I added proximity switches to all the moving parts and also deleted some extra corners and bits n' bobs I found around the level. It seems (in my opinion) to run a lot smoother. There is still some noticeable chugging but it is much better than before.

Please check it out (and heart it) again and let me know! Thanks!

Uh oh! I went to re-download it and noticed it was spelled "Ephoric" rather than "Euphoric".

I'm having server connection difficulties right now but I'll grab it as soon as I can get the download to complete and give it another play.

Ok, I gave this another try and it's loads better! The slowdown is perhaps half what it was, maybe less. It's much more playable, and still very much worthy of 5 more stars and a re-heart.2009-12-21 22:08:00

No worries! It's fun to play, so it's been my pleasure. I downloaded it one more time, played it again, gave it 5 more stars (I believe that's 15 in total), and re-re-hearted it.

I forgot to mention it before, but I absolutely love the cart at the very end of the level. Also, right when you enter the large wheel the glass breaking and cat noises really make me laugh for some reason. It's all in the timing.

For a person like me, who has trouble making a single piston work, your level is pure magic. I can only imagine all the time and effort you put on this level, and all the possible glitches and bugs you may have faced while creating it.

The mechanisms and machinery are really impressive. After I completed the level, I quickly selected "Play again" to study everything. I still don't know how you made those things possible.

As for the visuals, I also loved them. The contrast between the machines theme (usually one thinks of grey, boring mechanisms) and the colourful environment was a welcome surprise. The selection of materials, stickers and shapes is fantastic.

Congratulations. And also, thank you so much for this technical master class.

Lol, I guess a big thank you is in order! In terms of the slow down, I'm glad you found it better, that proximity switch trick really does work.

It's kinda frustrating that you cannot republish a level without losing all of your play data. :/ I hope they fix it.

Wow, thanks! That means a lot coming from such a great creator! I would be glad to share the level with you if you like or even make a video showing some of the mechanics in greater detail. Just let me know.

Wow! Really awesome level. The only problem is that it was very slow, but the slowness made it seem like slow motion which to me makes it feel very similar or like its used in the right level... LOL. 5:star:, author heart and hearted! 2009-12-21 23:18:00

Personally, I didn't care much for the visuals, but the gameplay's really cool! About the slowdown (which I thought was acceptable), the optimization level by AceCreator mentioned it also helps to use a camera zone to zoom in (less stuff on-screen).2009-12-26 15:26:00

I've been toggling back and forth between searching the Community Moon and playing some downloaded levels this morning. I just re-connected to the Community Moon for probably the 5th time in the last 30 minutes and heard the characteristic "bleagh" sound that happens when you un-heart something. This also happens when a level you hearted has become banned, so I started searching around.

This level has been banned! ...literally just minutes ago. What the heck???

Upon connecting to the server it also bans your local copy.
This is stupid.

Well I guess I won't go online if it means downloaded levels I enjoyed will get blocked on my PSP, even though I hearted the level! Talk about a design flaw.

I sincerely hope it's just in a moderation queue and not actually moderated... and also that we don't have the same affliction of high-rated-level-griefers that the PS3 version has.

They have to remove the level from your local PSP, or else obscene levels with naughty words and male appendages created by 12-year-olds would live on our PSPs forever. No thanks. It's no good either way, but the real shame here is that good levels like this one seem to keep coming under fire from the ban-o-rator.

I sincerely hope it's just in a moderation queue and not actually moderated... and also that we don't have the same affliction of high-rated-level-griefers that the PS3 version has. I'm with you there. We are all in danger of "jealousy griefs". I hope they get this figured out soon. In the meantime, I'm just really glad that we have someone like jackofcourse around the boards to help us out!

The levels don't automatically get banned when someone griefs them, nothing happens to the level until the moderator actually checks it over and then decides whether the grief report was accurate or not. Obviously in this case something has gone wrong as this level has nothing ban worthy in it.

I've asked and they will be investigating what's happened here first thing tomorrow, I'm sure it'll be unbanned asap just like Poo's levels.

Update!

Cambridge know about the issue, they've played the level before and agree that there is absolutely nothing offensive in it and are currently sorting it out with the moderators. I'm sure it will be unbanned as soon as the crossed wires become uncrossed

Another update!

It turns out that the grief report was actually legit, the moderators feel they have found something that is against the EULA. Cambridge are currently using their own moderation tool (it allows you to view the level zoomed out and see if there is anything naughty hidden away) to see what the moderators are seeing because they cannot understand why it has been griefed.

I'm still 100% confident that this will all be resolved. Cambridge are as baffled as we are as to what the moderators think they have found.

Legit? Oh no! Fullgorr, are you hiding something from us? Naughty....

Just kidding. I'm sure everything is kosher--the moderators probably just have a wild imagination. If this remains banned, well, then I will have a permanent frown on my face. But here's to an optimistic outcome!

Thanks again jack. I'm very confused as to what was found. The only thing I can honestly think of is the inclusion of the first bar of "Jingle Bells", but isn't that song public domain? And why would anyone have a problem with that?!

If it helps for Cambridge to talk with me directly, I'll provide my e-mail.

I love this level, it is really stunning and very clever - if it does remain banned then it will be such a shame. I don't think you should worry about the Jingle Bells bit though - think how many music based levels there are out there (on PS3 too) that play entire songs let alone a simple phrase. I really hope this gets resolved soon, and for the better!2010-01-26 20:16:00

The only thing I can think of is that if you put "Euphoric Physics" into a free online translator and bounce it around different languages 10 or 20 times, perhaps it comes back as "beer bong" or something like that.2010-01-26 21:13:00

I am told the level is back online!

The reason for the grief was that someone had stuck stickers all over it and then griefed it. The moderating team didn't realise that was a possibility, it is something to do with the game not having online play, (don't ask!).

As I stated back with Poo's griefing problems it is clear that their system needs to be revised and luckily that is exactly what is happening. Due to the errors and mishaps that have happened over the past few weeks the moderation team will be re-evaluating their procedures to ensure something like this doesn't happen again!

Go and re-download people!

I assume nothing was done to punish those responsible?

It's hard enough making a level with the imperfect create mode. Having to deal with unfair griefs would only drive away even more creators.

Awesome! Thank you so much Jack for keeping on top of everything. And thanks to everyone else for the support, to be honest, I was starting to lose hope.

What upsets me is how the moderators did not even review the level after the submission was made. What kind of system is that!? They should know where the good grief was made and should double check said area. People put in countless hours into these levels and they need to realize that.

The reason for it taking so long is because the moderators were adamant that what they had was grief worthy, which in actual fact it was, it's just what they had wasn't what FULLGORR published!

Both the person that passed this on to the right people (who you should all mysteriously thank by the way, she may see it ) and myself have tried to work out how they could make such an error, but it just doesn't really add up! They presumed that because you cannot play the levels actually online, that there was no way anyone would be able to deface the level and grief it. Absolutely crazy, I know.

The only thing I can possibly think of is this: You know when you don't really think about something and just presume you're right, and then when you actually think about it it's like 'Oh hang on, that's just totally wrong'. Well that's what they must have done! haha. But I suppose when it is regarding something that is your job, it basically just translates to incompetence!

Anyway, after this error they have clearly realised that their system and procedures are heavily flawed and are currently in the process of amending them. So hopefully we won't have any more problems like this!
