"No-one should be alone on Christmas." Why?

Archive: 9 posts

Now, I'm sure someone is going to storm in here after reading only the title, but I'm here to explain it anyway.

There seems to be some sort of overarching theme in the media that it's sad, pathetic, and really rather tragic that someone has to spend Christmas alone. "OHNOEZ!" The media cries when it sees this poor whoever-they-are. "If they're alone on CHRISTMAS, then they don't get to see what CHRISTMAS is all about! We need to show them that CHRISTMAS is a time for LOVE!" I'm paraphrasing, obviously.

Anyway, the question I ask is, what makes Christmas so special? Why should we only care enough about the poor whoever-they-ares of the world to think it's sad that they have no-one on Christmas? What about the rest of the year? Are we just supposed to ignore them and hope they go away?

To me, we should have the whole "No-one should be alone on CHRISTMAS!" mindset every day of the year. Christmas is a holiday that has lost tons of meaning over the years (Christ was most likely born sometime in March!) and now it just seems like an excuse to see family, get free stuff, and feel bad for the poor whoever-they-ares. Why can't we live every day like that? Shouldn't we live every day like that? Maybe that's just my Christianity speaking, but I think we should.

Discuss.

What rubbish! Nothing ruins christmas quite like other people do!

Personally, I'd love to spend just one christmas without a hoarde of pie-munching, sherry-swigging relations and casual associates (aka "friends") invading my space and dragging me from the comfort of my internal sphere.

At first i wouldn't think anyone should be alone at christmas. There's just something slightly depressing about one person being alone on a day when everyone else is supposedly having fun
When it comes though christmas is just feels like a regular day most of the time.

Like you said it is sort of evident that people stop caring every other day. Hell i used to be depressed for months at a time because i was alone so much but everyone only takes the time to be caring on one day of the year. Really we should all be more considerate no matter what day it is, even if it's not to the same extent

Are you going to be one of those people that say Rudolph is a girl and he probably has a tumor instead of a nose 2009-12-21 15:16:00

^In all technicality, all of the reindeer are female because male reindeer lose their antlers in the winter, while the females don't. So ha!

Also, Ungreth brings up a valid point. A lot of the time, people seem to think that anyone who is alone on Christmas would automatically be miserable and thus we should go cheer them up. But, what if they're alone on Christmas by choice? Now, now only are we neglecting them most of the year, but now we're also imposing ourselves on them when they'd really just rather be left alone.

Dex pretty much just summed up my entire topic into a much more manageable paragraph, as opposed to my wall of text.
