DarkSiders- codes equal cheap Red Faction, giving away a code

Archive: 47 posts

Yes... Finally, a Zelda game that isn't Zelda.

DarkSiders, to be released January 5th, is pretty much a Zelda type game, but with more actiony combat, kinda like God of War. But it has six huge dungeons- Zelda style. Yes, finally, someone decided to make a game like Zelda.

http://playmagazine.com/index.php?fuseaction=SiteMain.Content&contentid=1989

10/10, there are a "Few" spoilers (not really spoilers, basically all it tells you is it has some plot twists and some hints on what kind of plot twists they may be).

The story revolves around- eh, I don't feel like explaining, that review gives a pretty good idea.

I honstly can'ts wait the twenty or so days till it comes out, and it doesn't seem to be getting enough attention. So if anyone likes Zelda style dungeon/puzzle type games, then this may just be it. Especially since Zelda has been going down the toilet to me, but meh.

anyone else extremely excited for this?

I'm fashinated by the character design.

Zelda is a bit meh to me, I don't trust the franchise. Maybe when its a bit older it will get a good reputation.

The same for me.
Zelda and Mario are completely unappealing for me (as well as almost everything branded Nintendo), and extremely overhyped.
I see a bit of Soul Reaver into it.

I got this yesterday, am currently midway through the first dungeon (got the first item there).

It really does seem like a mesh of God of War and Zelda... You buy new attacks and moves from the shop, along with some weapons (I bought a scythe ).

The Zelday portions aren't too puzzling- yet anyway :/. I haven't explored too much of the city ruins but yeah. Pretty decent so far, methinks.

Apparently that Scythe can be gotten with a gamestop promotional code which is the same for everybody :o

This comes out in Europe today, i really can't decide whether i should get it.

I have like a backlog of 50 games that i'll probably never complete so i hate myself wheneverr i give in nd buy something new xD
with the amount of awesome new games coming out all at once i'll probably never complete anything!

Guess i should try to complete at least one game before i get something new

Still excited about this though, i thought Zelda TP was awesome so i'm kind of expecting something similar here.

The game is really cool.
I'm in search for the second heart.
Still Bayonetta is on another level of fun.
I own the JP version from early December and prefer to play Bayonetta over Darksiders.

I picked this up yesterday along with Bayonetta, loving it so far. For me it feels like 60% GoW and 40% Zelda and that really is an equation that equals greatness lol.2010-01-09 11:37:00

I think i'm like at the entrance of the first dungeon now.

So far it's pretty average. There's too much mashing square to kill enemies, gets dull really quickly.
The larger enemies are great, i just wish there were more of them.

I've heard it gets a bit better in the dungeons so maybe i should just shut up for a bit longer

I'm stuck at the first "main" boss (Tiamat)... It has a good Zeldy battle thing you use twice, and I manage to get her down to fighting me on the ground... Is there anything special I do while she's down other then beating her up, because she ain't going down, and I didn't buy any potions from Vulgrim ;-;.2010-01-09 13:58:00

Had a dilemma in the store yesterday. Darksiders or Bayonetta? Bought a copy of Bayonetta in the end. It's absolutely bloody mental!

From what Ive been reading though, the Darksiders = Zelda comparison is highly overexagerated and nothing more than wishful thinking by PS3 fanboys. Aside from featuring an open world game structure (that's not actually open at all until you have collected the right gadgets and power-ups), many people are saying that Darksiders feels quite sparse and generic compared to Zelda's rich and diverse worlds. The game structure is "more like Shadowman", according to my mate who's got it. Is that true?

lol, uhhh, no. Although it's true that the structure is not open-ended like Zelda it really doesn't affect the fun factor of it all. The Zelda comparison is definitely warranted now that I have completed two puzzle dungeons. In short, the way the dungeons are constructed and the various puzzles in each of them are exactly like the Zelda ones we know and love.

I cannot praise the visuals enough. Joe Mad's art style is very vibrant and unique and if you are a fan of his comic book work (X-Men being the most well known) then for that reason alone you will fall in love with game. There is some fantastic use of color throughout the environments which really help the visuals pop and do in fact make the environments feel rich and diverse. I personally like the story, there are some great character/enemy designs and the voice acting is of the highest quality.

I am loving Bayonetta as well but if someone was considering this or that then my advice would be Darksiders.

Do charge up attacks with your Boomerang, move in close for short sword combos, use dodge liberally. Eventually she will get into a dazed state allowing you to move in close for big combos. Do this a couple of times and enjoy the amusing finishing move I am playing on the hardest difficulty setting and so far it feels like "normal". Funnily enough there is a trophy for beating it on EASY...

Yeah, I managed to beat her finally half an hour ago <_>. Now I guess I need to go to the Subway (since I remember reading there was a subway dungeon in GameInformer, and I need to go down below according to Samuel).

But since you brought it up... I HATE the fact the three gold trophies are ALL for ebating the game on a certain difficulty <_<. Kinda a problem I have- the big trophies seem to all be rewarded for just simply beating the game

Ah well... Anyway, the combat may not be as good as GoW or whatever... but it still messes that with the dungeons, which I like, so THERE, Darksiders is better by my logic

I just finished dungeon 3 and wow! Multiple boss battles, some insane finishing moves, new gameplay elements and the best "upgrade" thus far. I am really loving this game and I genuinely hope it becomes a franchise. Although it does borrow a lot from GoW and Zelda it really does stand on it's own two feet and has it's own identity. It would be pretty cool if they made 4 games, each featuring a different Horseman of the Apocalypse...2010-01-10 23:53:00

I'm just past dungeon 2 now ^^

This game gets a ton better as you get more weapons and learn new moves.
For a while you're just mashing square a lot but with more moves and harder enemies you start trying out new combinations of moves, and the dodging is always fun

There's a lot that could be improved to put it on par with games like Zelda but those are just things like level design. It's still a really fun game.

I have to take the heart of the 4th Ancient One.
The game is really good and really well done, I absolutely love the character design, especially Samael.
And this one is taking me away from Bayonetta, a game where I already put 60 hours of plays and that I've finished at least 10 times.

Really a good way to start the new year.

Yeah I am on my way to get the 4th heart as well.

As I said in a previous post, I am a big fan of Joe Mad's art style and to play an entire game filled with his wonderful creations is really special. I love Samael's design too but really every character in the game is so well done that it's hard to pick a favorite.

I am on chapter 9 in Bayonetta, having a lot of fun with it. I am amazed you clocked in 60 hours, I can't see myself playing that style of game for more then 25 lol (that's about the amount of time I spent on DMC and DMC4, DMC2 got a lot less playtime, never played 3).

First of all I imported Bayonetta from JP at the end of November...then I really want to unlock everything (and do the same in Darksiders)
I'm a really old timer, I like single player experiences, and these two games are pure gold.
Engaging, with a good replay value, lots of secrects...they're worth the price you pay.
I feel really supportive for this kind of games.

Then speaking about Bayonetta, the harder difficulties are totally new experiences.
At Hard a lot of enemies are on fire (like the beginning of ch.3) and in Non Stop Climax, you don't have witch time, so the gameplay changes a lot.

Hopefully I will get back to normal gaming habits after some long online create sessions to complete 2 levels.

Well I just finished Darksiders yesterday and I enjoyed every minute of the epic journey. I have to reverse one of my previous statements and say that the game feels 60% Zelda and 40% God of War. The first couple of hours are very GoW-esque but the more you play the more it distances itself from that style of game. I loved a lot of the cleverly designed puzzles towards the end and the entire experience was well worth my money. The ending also hinted at EXACTLY what I was hoping for...

I am an old-school gamer too, began gaming on the Atari 7800 and owned every major console from the NES on. I really value the single player experience and agree games like this really need to be supported and deserve to sell well. Speaking of old-school, how did you like the Space Harrier section of Bayonetta? I remember playing that game for countless hours on my old Master System lol.

The Space Harrier segment is fun, until normal difficulties, then it begins to be just as hard as 80s games.
Anyway it was cool, especially since it had inverted controls, like old games.

Anyone mind sharing how you beat Silitha?

2 hours just to wittle her down to her 2nd attack phase is just plain ridiculous, and i even used my chaos form during that.
Everything about this battle just seems completly random and unfair, the first time i tried it took 2 minutes to get her to phase 2 and now i'm slashing away at her face for hours even starting the battle with less health than i had to begin with.

Dodge, dodge and dodge. When she stops teleporting use grappling hook to close gap to her and combo. Rinse, repeat. Should not take more then 10 mins, I was playing on Apocalyptic difficulty.2010-01-16 01:47:00

I was doing exactly that and it was taking over an hour. It's not so much that i couldn't dodge her attack either, after that amount of time you're either gonna have a tired hand or give up xD2010-01-16 06:55:00

Use L2 to see what Silitha does to avoid her easily.
The fourth time when I avoided all her attacks I had her in 3 section of combos, while the other times I don't know how many times I hit her, even 2 times transformed in Chaotic form.

Yeah i'm getting the same as you Omega, the first time i got her to phase 2 really fast, second time it took a chaos transformation and the 3rd time not even that did the job :/

Maybe it's bugged and her health stacks every time you die.

Edit:

Yeah it definatly must be bugged. I just tried again and she died in like 10 minutes, her first phase was over after 3 hits.

If anyone else is finding that her health keeps increasing every time you die then try restarting the game

Now I got stucked.
Soon after Silitha you enter the Dark Tower.
I entered one of the doors but I haven't got the powers to complete the puzzle.
This time Samael didn't gave me any update.
In the room where I'm blocked there are 3 light buttons, a wall that goes up and down when you push the buttons and several teleport round windows, but I haven't the power to go through them.
And I can't exit the room.

Hey i was stuck there, there are holes in the wall that are really hard to see.

Can't describe it really, but when the walls are up/down there are probably more doors than you thing. You don't use the teleporty holes til later.

Yeah, I pass through that section and got the Astral Gun, now I have to bring back the light beam through that door, but yesterday I had a serious headache, and solving the portal puzzles didn't help me at all, so I quit.
I hope to get soon out of the tower since I want to take all the power ups that I forgot.

Do you ever find that entering the next dungeon can be a bit abrupt?

For like the past 3 dungeons now i've been meaning to train my weapons a bit more and find a load of the secret collectibles like the abyssal armour.

Every time though i'm like "well i'll just go to samael to see where the next dungeon is" or "i'll just go near the dungeon and get the serpent hole for later" - and then i find that the dungeon entrances are becoming more and more abrupt and i end up entering without potions.

Hey i just found out that you can leave the Black Throne dungeon between starting a new laser section.
I suppose each laser has it's own mini dungeon, once you've started one you can't get out, but you can take a break in between.

----------------------------------------
re-edit:

Decided not to mention a lot of stuff so you can have as much fun exploring

Though i'm still short of one gadget annoyingly and i think i know where there might be some sort of sidequest to get the rarest artifact or something, i just need that gadget to get to it.

This is a real fun piece of gaming journalism...stuff like that should be written at least every day.

EPICNESS!
I hope they don't mess the second.
I had a lot of fear that Vigil, being a new software house could fail with this one, and now I fear they can mess the second

I higly fear the devs will divide the powers of War with the other Horsemen instead of inventing something new. The scythe is Death's weapon, Strife has guns, the other a whip/chain...I don't know, as well as the idea excites me, I...fear

With it being a new franchise i can see they probably didn't want to take risks. That's the optimistic view anyway, either that or they just aren't very creative xD

Hopefully they'll be a bit more risky with the sequel. I don't care much whether it turns out better or worse, if i see that they're trying out new ideas i'll gain a lot of respect for those developers

Dividing the existing powers between the horsemen without would be just about the worst thing they could do, as you said.
I'm not sure what to expect from the next game, i'd probably like to see a game dedicated to a different horsemen with some new combat.
Strife could perhaps have a more stealth-based style, Fury could have a combo system where he gets stronger the more he links attacks, Death could possess enemies and gain their attacks.

Not sure if i'd want all horsemen being controlled in one game though, that could overcomplicate things. I'd rather they take it slowly and have a sequel for each one. If they don't finish the series because of financial problems then i'd rather be left with 2 or 3 good games than a really bad one.

EPICNESS!

My thoughts exactly. I literally started laughing out of joy at this part because once again, it was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. The best thing Vigil could is make three more games, each featuring a different Horseman. I found an old interview with Joe Mad, apparently Strife is everyone's favorite: http://comics.ign.com/articles/892/892449p1.html

anyway, I unno if anyone saw, but the codes in preorder boxes now have a purpose:

So, you could get Red Faction for 5 bucks with shipping if you have the code and in America...

However, I kinda don't want that game, so...

If you're in america and want Red Faction for 5 bucks shipping, then tell me and I'll give you my code for free :/
