We love our lurkers. We really do. Guest can get a good feel for the site, look at threads, and so on.

But with the current load on the servers, I want to make sure our members are getting the better end of the stick. We average around 60% guest vs 40% members viewing the site and threads at a time. While guest haven't had the privilege to post in threads, with 60% of visitors (guests) viewing threads and our servers having some hiccups, I at least want to try and limit the bandwidth guests take up so users can hopefully have a better and more consistent experience for the more loyal followers.

So for a little while, I want to try to limit guests to just seeing the forums but not being able to open threads and see them. This will also hopefully encourage lurkers to jump into the fun and finally join. I appologize to those members who sometimes just want to view threads without logging in. But we have been getting slammed on the server lately, and we want our members to be getting the most out of this site. This also could just be a temporary measure until we figure out some more tweaks or find a better server.

Thanks guys and gals,

LBP

I was thinking about this exact idea the other day! I hope it helps alleviate the server issues and we get some more great creators to join up!

Good idea! Hopefully, some of the guests will then join, donate/subscribe, and we can have ourselves a shiny dedicated server.

Having to give up reading threads without logging in is a small sacrifice to getting the server to work a lot smoother.

Great idea, nice job.

Just checked things out from a guest's point of view. Quick suggestion. It might be a little less confusing to our regular lurkers if you updated the announcements with an extract from the OP of this thread considering they can't view this one to see what's going on.

Please reply. This drives me nuts. I've seen a guest post before on the Online create contest thread...2009-12-19 16:05:00

That was a bit of corrupted data that caused a user's post to appear as a guest. It was a rare occurrence - I'm not exactly sure why it happened, but I don't expect it to happen again.

Most of time I browse this forum from work, but I can't login from there because cookies are blocked. This change makes it more difficult (for me) to keep up with what's going on and to contribute.2009-12-19 22:57:00

Yes, that's a fair comment. I suppose it comes down to what members want compared to what can be achieved.

Is LBPC worth, let's say, ?4/$5 a month to you? Or could we look at different income streams, such as more adverts or sponsorships?

I wondered why it didn't let me view any of the threads when I had a look on my psp the other day, now I know

What is causing the added pressure on the servers? Is what MrsS says relevant at all, as in would more donations help?

Well, now that we've moved servers, guests are able to view threads again and the pressure on the server is no longer an issue. At the moment, we're fairly stable when it comes to server costs, but the new server does cost more than the old one, so more of that money is going toward server fees. We're able to afford it with the money we're making from ads, but every little bit helps. No pressure, though - if you'd like to donate, do it out of generosity, not because you feel like you need to.
