Garfields adventuresBelweg
If you?ve waited to meet Garlfield in LittleBigPlanet, now is your chance
This is the first level I started to create on my own and it's
inspired from Garfield. One player recommended, because with two
people(or more) some parts may start malfunctioning sometimes.

Few thanks goes for creator LeuraZ who helped me with few logic issues.
all
Garfield is on diet again, because of Jon and he is very hungry as you can
guess. In the level you explore in Garfields house and try to make your way
trough different obstacles. In order to do that, you have to use your
surroundings. There?s different objects in the level that may help you.
Using some objects correctly might be a little clumsy at the start, so
be patient Also remember be careful when movin some objects, because if
they fall somewhere, where they shouldn?t, then you have to start over.

Hi, Belweg;

My first confession: I did not finish this level. I'll tell you why in a minute.

Second confession: I must admit that I really don't like Garfield, so I won't comment on the premise at all.

These two confessions aside, I think you did a really good job with the characters. Your representations of Garfield and Odie were spot on. I also always really like the "little-sackboy-in-a-big-world" scenario, which you have pulled off quite well here. In all, your presentation is quite good. In terms of gameplay, I applaud what you have tried to do with environmental puzzles. Rocking the plunger to make a ramp was a good implementation. Manipulating things in the environment to advance is the basis for some of my favourite games, as well as some of my favourite levels in LBP. It's also one of the things I have trouble incorporating into my own ideas.

I found a lot of frustrating parts in your level, however. There were quite a few jumps that I had to do over and over again. The one from the toilet to the toilet-paper roll to the top of the hanger to the top of the toilet was maddening! Try to have a less experienced player do a run-through so you can see which parts may be a little too challenging. The part with the slipper and the four drawers was also quite a hassle for me. After wandering back and forth for about ten minutes, I finally managed to get the slipper upturned so I could get up to the higher drawer. Then I dropped one of the pencils down onto the floor and had to restart. I dutifully did and finally got through, but another player would probably have quit long before. Some better markers or hints as to what you want the player to do would help a lot. Try, too, to troubleshoot your level, anticipating what might go wrong, and build in things to ensure that you never have a game-breaking circumstance. I know you warn the player at the beginning about this, but the truth is that most will opt not to replay your level, but simply move on. The garbage-can part with the egg cartons and the straws were similarly troublesome to me, and it took me a good twenty minutes to fiddle around with the stuff until I could finally reach the chair.

I did get Odie to the edge, and Garfield kicked him in the @$$ so he flew away, which was amusing. Unfortunately, that was the end of the adventure for me. I'm not sure if I was supposed to hang on to Odie as he flew away, or what, but I couldn't figure out how to move on beyond that part...Sorry.

The two big recommendations I have would be: 1. Tweak some of your more difficult jumps. Don't make it easy peasy, but remember that there is a fine line between a challenge and an infuriating experience. 2: Give the player some more hints about what he should do. Again, you don't have to spell it out exactly, but there are ways to indicate the steps one should take to succeed.

I gave your level three stars. If things were a little smoother, I'd give it four.

Cheers;

Thanks for the constructive critic. I know that alot of people will find my level hard, but I did it on purpose I know that some clues might be good, but I tested my level with many people and observed their progress. They figured out pretty quick how to get trough, so that?s why I kept the level like that. They also had hard times with few part, but they liked the challenge. Of course I don't have a bunch of whiny little kids as my friends, which are the majority of players I didn?t want to make a level for them, but for a more mature players. Of course the rating will suffer because of it, but that?s the risk I take.

The trick with toilet-paper part is to keep jumping. Just tap the jump button all the time and you?ll get quickly up. I didn?t quite understand why you upturned the slipper? You needed to push it near the lowest drawer and use it to jump on the drawer. Then you need to grab at the chair and get yourself to the second drawer. Pull/grab it out and then get top of it by using the chair again.

After Garfield kicked Odie, then you find him yammering at the top of the carbage-can. The point was to use Odie as a stepstone to get on the kitchen counter. After that the rest would have been is easy, no more tricking with the objects, hard jumps, or anything like that

But I understand your points, so I might do few changes

I see. I think all you need to do with the part with the drawers, then, is to lower the grabbable material on the chair so it's visible, or signal in some other way that you can hold onto it. I tried jumping from the lower drawer over while mashing R1, but he never grabbed on.

There might be a bug with Odie, since he never appeared on the garbage can after he got booted by Garfield. That's why I was stuck.

I also had a hard time with the garbage material in terms of their logical placement. What is the best way to get onto that chair?

It is visible, the bottom of the chair is differently colored, and there?s also R1 sticker on the leg of chair. It looks a bit fuzzy, but the grab materia is very visible. Hmm.. not sure about Odie, it have always worked when I've tried. Proximity switch is located on the edge of table. I wanted to have realistic obstacles on my level, not some stupid looking ropes, which pull you up Or some floating platforms that have nothing to do with the house nor realism. I found that manipulating the objects was the best way and that?s what I've also heard from everybody who betatested my level. Maybe it's not just suited for everybody. What was exactly hard with the garbage part? You just need push the egg cartons together, get the straw on the top and then the cork. I dont find it hard at all. Betatesters found it very challengin in a good way, since they hadn?t played any levels where objects needed to be manipulated like that. But like I said, there?s no one who can just like everything It's very understandable that using objects like that may be disruptive for someone.2010-01-14 16:46:00
