GT5 Time Trial Demo

Archive: 28 posts

Downloaded first thing this morning (update was running a little behind for North America and I forgot all about my EUR account) and really, really dig it. Completely overhauled physics engine and the cockpit view is amazing. Finally some gyration and bumpiness while viewing things from inside the car.

I heard a lot of talk about Forza being the most realistic driving simulation a few months back and I had to bite my tongue because, well, I'm not privy to playing Forza. However, this new GT5 build blew me away as far as a simulation model is concerned. I've gotten fairly good at GT5: Prologue, but my skills didn't quite help me with this new engine; I was a full eight seconds off of the leader in the tuned car!

The graphics left a bit to be desired, but that's probably more to do with the track than anything. Bland to say the least, but Prologue alone shows Polyphony is up to the challenge from a visuals standpoint. Not that graphics are close to everything, but Polyphony set the bar high long ago and... GT5 with lackluster visuals would be just as heartbreaking if Square shipped FFXIII with Modern Warfare 2 grade cutscenes. "Disappointment" says it all.

Custom soundtracks would put this game over the top for me. I'm not above wearing headphones, blasting my custom Nine Inch Nails driving mix via the PSP. But it would be so much better if my neighbors were forced into submission by lossless, deafening 5.1 audio, Mr. Reznor screaming "I'M GONNA BURN THIS WHOLE WORLD DOOOWWWNNNN!!!", the industrial sound of NIN blending perfectly with the roars of engines and shrieks of tires.

shrieks of tires.

Which are way over the top in this. :/

Agree though the physics are great as is the handling.

Played this today. The drivers view has definitely improved since Prologue.

Thought I had done a good lap only to end up in 10,000th place.

The racing still isn't good enough to match forza, the tyre squeal is way over the top, and the cars just don't feel...right.....2009-12-20 10:28:00

Oh, the cars feel exactly right in my opinion. 2009-12-20 14:11:00

Still not up to par with Forza? Man, something must really be wrong then. Is it just realism or personal preference at this point? Because it sure feels "right" to me...

ha, not true, i prefer LBP on the PS3

It may just be personal preference, but the racing feels so much tighter on F3... And i don't like how when you overtake the Ai they just...stay there. They don't try to overtake you back, unless you go off.

The online was also pretty poor in the prologue... Which is a major thing for me... In forza i race in a championship and it is much more fun than racing the Ai - had a 20 lap race around road atlanta last night, it was wheel to wheel the entire race. You just don't get that with AI, and the online play isn't good enough to play for a long time after playing forza...

maid3n, why don't you wait for the full game instead of a time trial demo before making such comparisons? I have a feeling that GT5 will blow F3 out of the water.2009-12-20 18:24:00

I have a feeling they will spend ages making thousands of cars and tracks, and will think they make an awesome handling model. But the racing isn't like real racing.2009-12-20 19:19:00

Well I never played forza but I'm still slightly unimpressed. Then again I do think this is a rather old build of the game, and it's hardly the funnest car to drive in the game. So that might have something to do with it.2009-12-21 00:46:00

Myself, I'm still partial to arcade racers over racing sims (Burnout games being close to the top of my list), but I did give the time trial a go today. Made it up to about 37,450th place or so. Go me.2009-12-21 01:06:00

This is sort of about GT in general but i played the psp version and it seems sort of realism over fun. I know it's meant to be that way with it being a racing sim but games are still generally supposed to be fun

Not that i didn't have SOME fun though, it's really rewarding watching yourself finally pull of some 'flawless' corners towards the beginning of the game and adding a few more cars to your collection. Most likely it's the lack of career mode on the psp that didn't keep me playing, it's hard for me to play any game for a length of time entirely on skirmish mode

I'm sure i'll be fine playing GT5 once i get the practice in but i feel they should add a mini arcade difficulty for beginners who are just looking for a bit of fun before the full game

Either way i'm not sure how much i'll enjoy GT5 but i'll probably end up getting it at some point

I like the realism aspect of the GT series, I have a few entries (but not prologue).

I also like the feeling you get with maneuvering the vehicle or tweaking it to your specs, but somehow there was something lacking here. I don't know, maybe I need to give it another whirl..

If my xbox worked i'd give forza a whirl

Generally i consider anything MS related these days as low quality but i'm trying not to do that so much to get the moral upper ground on my friends xD
They hate on anything Ps3 related without knowing anything about it so i'd like to say i at least give Xbox games a go

I just downloaded and played it. Have to say I much prefer Forza 3 to this. The car didnt seem to have much weight, and the physics engine is a mile of what Forza can do. I wasnt impressed at all unfortunatly2009-12-21 12:43:00

Even if you don't like my opinion, everyone loves Grantos. So listen to him

You can't judge GT5 regarding those points on the basis of the time trial thingy, though.

I can judge the handling model and the racing - they aren't going to create an entirely new handling model are they? So it won't match up to Forza for racing, and it's a racing game.

Out of all the people on this forum, you, mr xbox himself, would be the last person I would ever dream of considering to be a fanboy.

I made a thread against fanboys once and in the console war forum game im the team that hates fanboys, I judge by the actual game not who it is made by or what system it is on
