Now and Then by amazingflyingpoo

Archive: 87 posts

I just published my first PSP level, so I wanted to let you all know it is out there and see if you can let me know what you think of it. The idea behind the level is that you have invented a time machine, but you were so obsessed with building it, that you have neglected more important things in your life. Your son was killed because of you, and your wife has left you. All that is left for you is to try to use the time machine to travel back in time and save your son.

The game mechanic in the level is that you must travel between 3 different time periods (one time period is the one in which your son is about to die). You must do things in the different time periods to open up a path so that you can reach your son before it is too late.

My PSN is: amazingflyingpoo
The Level Name is: Now and Then

Hey amazingflyingpoo,

When I first heard the story in your post I was afraid that it would be too serious to be enjoyable. But boy was I wrong! That was probably the best story level out there so far! Gameplay was original and thought-provoking, and the design of the houses and trees were quirky and beautifully cartoony enough to offset the seriousness of the story.

The opening storytelling sequence was also amazing! I usually get bored with too much text, but your story was engaging enough to keep me interested. I also love the challenges you presented. Finding that seed was amazing, and the coal game was also challenging without being frustrating.

All in all, I loved the story and I thought the game layout, scenery design, and music complimented it really well. I guess my only gripe about the level was the time machine design. I thought it was simple and practical, but your story suggests that the sackfather spent copious amounts of time building it, and I think it should've been more elaborate (at least in visuals) to stay cohesive with the story.

But that was an amazing level, and I am in awe of your creative talent. Superb job!:star::star::star::star::star:, author and level heart.

Jumping down the cement well,

Wow this is really the first level of this calibre I've seen attempted on the PSP. I'm glad you stuck to it, as this one must have been horrible to try and make with the slightly broken create mode
It's really paid off though, lovely visuals, geius story and the mechanic works everytime.

This is a masterpiece. It took me back to the good old days of graphic adventures. I enjoyed everything: the puzzles, the changing scenario, the dialogues, the cartoonish setting... Without doubt, this level has the best story and the most innovative gameplay of all LBP PSP! Congratulations, it must have been a hell to deal with the Editor, but it was worth it.

5 stars, hearted level & author.

Wow, thank you all so much for playing the level and for the awesome feedback I was a little worried that I would put the time I did into making the level, and then it would never get played since I'm not really sure how LBP PSP works in terms of levels getting noticed, but after hearing that all of you liked the level so much, I guess I am happy whether or not the level gets a lot of plays.

@Jeffcu: I decided to make the time machine very simple above ground because I wanted to put as much thermo as I could into the mechanics and scenery of the level. I was hoping that the player would just assume that all of the mechanics were below ground, but since I never actually stated it, I guess that there was no reason for you to think it. Sorry about that In my defense, the thermo was completely maxed out, and it took me 2 days just to fight with the thermo before I could publish. The game seemed to have let me put out a lot more switches and objects than it wanted to, so all of a sudden it got fed up and wouldn't let me do anything. I tried deleting around 10 switches and 3 objects, but I still couldn't do anything (not even hook a wire up), so the thermo is maxed way out I guess(?).

Now that I am finally done with my first level, I plan to play through the levels posted on LBPC and give some feedback of my own. I am excited that LBP PSP is so young, because it means that there aren't 20 levels posted everyday on here, so I can actually check them out and be an active member

Thanks again

Now, as we've discussed many times Poo, you know this is not my kind of level! But as I've always said, that does not mean I can't appreciate it for what it is, and with that in mind, it is aboslutely fantastic.

From a playing point of view, it is not my thing, running backwards and forward tends to get me a little tedious, but that says more about me than the level

However, subjectivity aside, what you have accomplished is fantastic. The story is great, I too thought 'woah, that's a bit heavy' from your description, but it doesn't play like that at all.

From a technical stand point what you have managed to create is out of this world.

5 stars without a doubt.

Thanks so much for the feedback Jack! I owe you a big thanks on this level, because before I had talked to you about the problems with LBP PSP's create mode, I was unaware that there is a way to avoid the issue with items floating out of place. The level would have never been possible without your input, so thank you so much for that.

I really appreciate that you would still play the level and put a good word in for me even though you know that my style of levels are not the type you enjoy.

Keep up the awesome work on LBP PSP, and I hope to see a new level by you soon

WOW, this level really gets into my head.
The story is so depressing and deep D:
That's not a general statement, it's just how I feel about it.
TRULY an epic level, five starred, hearted, and player hearted.
Keep up the work, this was INCREDIBLE.

I'm really at a loss of where to begin. There's just so much I like... I guess I can sum it up in saying that I had a very hard time figuring out how you did everything. When I play a level, especially a complex one, my mind just automatically dissects everything. I like figuring out how illusions, logic, and gameplay elements were constructed and seeing how other creators' thought processes work. This level had me completely stumped for a good long while, and even now I'm still not 100% sure how you pulled off some of the gameplay. Troubleshooting all the possible paths and ways that players can approach the level must have been craziness.

The concept and story are fantastic, unique, and I love your approach. It's sobering without being depressing, deep without being preachy, and serious without being corny. Plus I like how spoilerthe somber message and sad nature of the tale ends up with a happy ending. I can honestly, truthfully say that this level has my favorite original story of any LBP level I have played on either platform. There are longer stories out there and ones that are more detailed, but for my money this one takes the cake. Really.

I could go on and on. The intro, the great cartoony visuals, the fun puzzles... As far as I'm concerned, this is the best LBP PSP level out there, bar none. This is the first official community permanent resident on my PSP.

5 stars - I'd give you 10 if there was an option for it. Hearted and a creator heart. Tagged (in my mind) Brilliant. This is the whole can of awesome sauce.

Brilliant level, amazing!

The story was great, and the time-travel mechanics worked flawlessly. The intro was really well done, it reminded me of retro games that displayed the story shortly before starting.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. It is very encouraging to hear that all the frustration of fighting with the PSP create mode paid off.

@Taffey: Thanks a lot for the long feedback. I absolutely love "The Right Stuffing", so it means a lot to hear that you enjoyed the level so much I am thrilled that we have awesome creators like you, FULLGORR, and Lleonard on LBP PSP, because with levels as good as yours, I really don't miss LBP PS3 at all

Oh no! This is a real shame. Why would Cambridge moderate this? This level was certainly one of the landmarks of the game, and I can only feel sorry for future players who can't play this fabulous level. Amazingflyingpoo, perhaps you can edit and republish once you find out why it was moderated?

I just played this today, but I downloaded it yesterday. It's a fantastic level, and I hope it's not moderated. I hoped they figured out the moderation junk from the PS3 version, but I guess not. It's still "pull first and investigate later, if ever" eh? That's sad.
Can anyone verify that it has been modded or not?

My wife and I had to move apartments, so I was without internet for 4 days. I was excited to get on and see how Now and Then was doing when I finally got internet today, just to find that the level have been banned???

I really don't think that there is anything that could really be considered ban worthy, or even slightly offensive, in the level. My only guess is that the file size was too big, but that is sort of a funny reason to ban since I didn't do anything to break the system, I just filled the level to it's maximum size.

If anyone has any idea who to contact about this, then please let me know.

Ungriefed and back online!

Anyone who had it on their psp will have to delete it and redownload it but that is all. Rating, hearts and plays have all been restored!

'Human error' is the reason I received for it getting griefed.

At least it is all sorted now!

First of all, thanks so much for your help Jack! There is no way in the world I could have figured this whole ordeal out on my own since I just didn't know who to even go to. I cannot express how much I appreciate your quick response in this!

Also, thanks so much to everyone on the forum. I'm sure that you can imagine how unpleasant it is to have a level banned for no apparent reason, and have no idea who to go to since Sony Cambridge doesn't have a forum (that I know of). It was very encouraging to hear from all of you that you liked the level and were sad to see it go.

And lastly, thanks so much for playing the level

You must be in the know with someone. I am sure you cannot talk about much, but are they aware of all the little bugs in the game and are they working on fixing them?

I heard of confirmation of them fixing some things, but didn't know if that was before the patch we already received.

Don't mean to rush them but I think they would have gotten a fix out by now. Some games get patched really quick, just hope it doesn't get put on the back burner and forgotten about.

Yep, it was moderated. The copy of it in my Downloaded Levels says "This level has been found to be in breach of our Terms of Service and has been banned." I saw this change I think on Thursday and checked again just now.

I've played through the level before. There is nothing AT ALL in it that would violate any kind of normal Terms of Service and the level couldn't possibly offend any sane person. It's frustrating that you're having so much trouble with this level because it's honestly one of the best and most creative levels out there right now.

[Edit] HA!!! Apparently I have the unbanned version of the level in one of my historical backups so I can go back and play it. Now the question is whether or not there's a way to extract level data... hmm... I'mma try.

Hi I found this post on LittleBigWorkshop from a few days ago:

http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=120651&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

If you are a member (I am not, so can't) maybe you could message Sam_protagonist like it says and explain what has happened? It definitely seems odd that it would be moderated again so soon after it was un-moderated after what was admitted to be a mistake.

Yeah, I said in my reply to Poo that it could possibly be something to do with the moderation changes. They did say that certain things were going to be clamped down on. I suppose the subject matter in this level could be deemed not suitable for under 7 year olds!2010-01-17 23:01:00

Alrighty, thanks for the advice T3natrix. I sent Sam a message of at LBW. While I understand that death could be presented in a way that is unsuitable for LBP, I sort of thought that it was handled fine in Now and Then. Not only is the level very light-hearted, but the issue is also resolved in the end. Movies like Lion King involve death and don't resolve the issue and it is fine. Since you cannot die in Now and Then, there is no way to NOT save the child, so there has to be a positive resolution unless the player decides to quit playing. But I guess it's up to Sony on this one, so I'll just keep hoping. Thanks a lot for the help everyone 2010-01-18 02:28:00

The level should now be back up. Apparently it gets grief reports sent in far more than any other level.

Possible reasons:

Your PSN name (ridiculous, I know).
The story (obvious reasons, but again it doesn't really make much sense).

That obviously doesn't give reason as to why they actually listen to the grief report after knowing about the level. Clearly poor communication is an issue and they obviously have some improving and refining to do of their system.

However, it isn't Cambridge who deal with the grief reports so they are not to blame. They've been pretty helpful and efficient in getting the matter(s) resolved really!

Hopefully it will not happen again.

Thank you so much Jack! I am very relieved that the level was not banned because of the new rules on banning that were implemented, plus I am very thankful for the detailed answer as to what happened, so now I will know for a fact that the level is most likely going to be un-banned if it is banned again (LOL, I would have never guessed that it would be the most griefed level on PSP ). Next time you talk to your contact, please give them a big thank you for me if you think of it.

@Arrestor: Thanks for the news on being a featured level I've been so worried about the level, all that I wanted was to get it back up. I would have never expected to get it up and be featured!

[EDIT- I just had my first chance to check on the level and I noticed a few things: First of all, I lost probably 50 or 60 hearts, if not more when I got the level ub-banned. But that is really fine with me, I'm just curious as to why that would be the case. Also, I went to check on my level in Featured Levels, and saw that it was not there. After reading the thread Taffey made, I noticed that I was featured in EU. I'm on the NA servers so I'm not sure why that is? Maybe because I am in China right now? Either way, I guess I'll just have to take your guys' word for it since I can't see the EU Featured Levels]

It could be 50-60 is the number of people who went online and had your level automatically removed from their PSP for being in a banned status.

A downloaded level isn't automatically removed from your PSP when it's banned. It just shows up on your level list as being banned and your only options are do nothing with it or delete it. I need to check though, I can't remember if the level kept my heart status on it when it was unbanned. (I wasn't really paying attention)2010-01-19 16:38:00

It was banned before, admitted as a mistake and unbanned, then banned again, and admitted as a mistake again and now it's unbanned.

Apparently the level just gets a large number of grief reports for some unfathomable reason. :/

This was one of the most incredible LBP levels I have ever played, for PS3 or PSP. Your ability to tell a story through a LBP level is unprecendent, and I think it will encourage other creators to incorporate more story elements in the future. Thanks so much for your awesome feedback It makes me so excited to hear that people are enjoying my levels! Thank you so much for checking out "Now and Then", and for taking the time to leave feedback

@rimmonhouse: If you have any specific questions, or just want something super general, just send me a PM and I would be glad to tell you any thoughts that I have, though I certainly wouldn't consider my thoughts as anything special I am just a LBP lover like you are!

I thought it was about time I got around to commenting on other people's levels and I might as well start with yours, since it's incredible. Really well done with the mechanics - it's still totally unlike any other levels I've managed to download so far and the storytelling is really impressive. I feel like I want to be a bit more gushing with my praise but I can't really think what else to say about it. Anyway, I gave it 5*s, you're probably sick of hearing that from people.2010-02-01 11:13:00

Thank you so much for you feedback smurficus (awesome name BTW) and salieri! It wasn't until I read that you liked my level that I went and checked out yours (salieri), and then I immediately went to make it the LBL PSP Level of the Week #2 (http://www.littlebigland.com/little-big-planet-user-level/lbl-psp-level-of-the-week-week-2-colossal-calamity-by-salieriaax/), so I ended up forgetting to even reply to this (that would explain the 2 week gap in the reply). It always means a lot to hear that someone gave 5 stars, because it's great to hear that even 1 person really liked my level. But to hear that an awesome author (who has made one of my favorite PSP levels) has given me 5 stars, well, that is a huge compliment

Thanks so much for taking the time to play my levels and for leaving feedback!

Gah, you have GOT to be kidding. Again??

Oh wait, you said you downloaded it ages ago? Well, the Ban Monster has eaten and subsequently barfed up this level about 4 times, so you may have a previously blacklisted version. I can't get online with my PSP right now, but I just saw this level on the Community Moon last night when I was downloading showcase entries. I'm sure it's up right now and available to re-download.

Cripes.

Can anybody else take a look and confirm? We may need to light the Jack beacon again.

Jesus. Yup, it's banned. Again.
Seriously, after the 3rd, why not put it on some sort of 'Never Ban' list? I too have had my first level eaten by the Ban Monster too much (Though my level sucked compared to this, so this is a much bigger loss.) and I really wish they'd do something.

Light up the beacon!

I don't think they've worked out how to talk to each other yet. I think they're still trying to communicate using rocks and sticks2010-03-26 19:42:00

This is sad
After the third time, you'd think that they would make a list for levels that can't be banned.

I think this will clear things up. I found this tossed away by Cambridge.

Noooooo! Thanks so much for noticing this guys! They waited until I left town without my PSP and banned it again! I really appreciate that you all would bring attention to the issue so that it can hopefully be resolved very soon. As I have been told, this is not cambridge's fault, it is Sony's. So don't get too mad at Cambridge for it thanks so much for your help everyone, and maybe if I'm lucky the level will be back to normal by the time I head home!2010-03-27 06:02:00

Alright, I finally got around to playing this level, so here we go!

Story

+ Well thought out story
+ Time travel and tragedy collide to create an interesting experience
? Your son is extremely fat for some reason

Gameplay

+ Creative gameplay elements
+ Time travel system is implemented well via 2-way switch and "portal" well
+ It was cool to see the same place in different time periods and how they've changed, but...
? ... they didn't change a whole lot
- Gameplay seems somewhat drawn out, making you constantly go back and forth through the time periods. This adds length to the gameplay, but can seem quite tedious after your 4th time back to "5 years prior"

Final Thoughts
Though not perfect, the level is designed very well. It is fun to play, and uses some interesting concepts and techniques. It may be worth noting that I got stuck between the stove and the wall in the bridge control room, forcing me to retry. This took me to a different time period, and I had to come back via the time machine. If it were a little further from the wall, that would fix the problem (though I'm not sure if this is feasible based on space limitations in the bridge building). Your story is original and fresh, and your character implementation helps to enhance it. The only ways I could think to improve it would be to change the time periods more to increase diversity, and to emphasize the time difference. This way, it wouldn't seem so tedious to go back and forth between time periods, due to a fresh yet familiar scenery each time you time travel.

Also if the stove was moved.

Final Score::star::star::star::star:
And a heart.

Thanks so much for another incredible review Xero! I am always thrilled when I see that you have posted on one of my threads, because it means that you most likely gave me some detailed feedback :-)

It's also great that you are honest! You made some great points about the level, and it really is too bad that I could not make the different time periods look a lot different. I was getting used to the level editor when I made this level (this is my first level for PSP, and I lost 10 to 20 hours because of all the bugs. I literally almost gave up on this level and LBP PSP as a whole two times while making this. Thankfully I managed to finish it, and then I got terribly addicted to the game ), so that is my main excuse. I did completely max the thermo out, so there really isn't much I could have changed. I tried to make the trees in the background different as well as the dialog (and the major changes that occur with planting seeds and such), but anything more than that just wasn't possible.

The good news is that I am hard at work on a new level that has an extreme mechanic like Now and Then (but it isn't time travel), and this one should do much better with the details. I am afraid that I will soon be getting to a point where I am fighting with the thermo, so hopefully I can get it done, but we'll see...

Thanks so much for the wonderful review!

Well, it isn't my first level on LBP, but it was my first PSP LBP level :-) I had already been playing LBP on PS3 for about 9 or 10 months before I got LBP PSP, so I was very used to the level editor. There are just some things that are very hard to get used to on PSP, and back when I was making Now and Then, a lot of the workarounds for the bugs had not become well known yet (like the drifting bug and gluing bug with objects that you save to the popit), so figuring all of that out was very very irritating.

Thanks again for the feedback :-D

I played this level a while back, it was awesome. One of the best levels on the PSP. I absolutely love the idea of traveling back and forward through time.In fact, this is the first level that I've ever saw that uses that concept. Nice story too.

:star::star::star::star::star: and heart.

Thanks so much for the feedback X-FROGBOY-X! I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed the concept of the level. I used to be super active on LBP PS3, and I had been building on it for about 8 months when I had to move away without my PS3. I spent months after the move until LBP PSP came out coming up with the concept behind Now and Then, so it got a lot of thought. Sadly, the many bugs with the editor limited the level a bit (since back then there weren't well know workarounds for the bugs), but I am still happy with how it turned out :-)

On a different note, I don't think that I've had the pleasure of running into you on the forums yet, so it is nice to meet you. I am going to send you a friends request right now :-D
