Introducing my newest level. "OMG Its a Robot Revolution".

First off I should say to actually play this level you must first complete the training level "OMG Its a Robot Revolution Training Level". At the end you'll get a key for this.

Its a psuedo 2D old style arcade game similar to Choplifter but with plasma balls and robots

Its your classic "Retro robots are destroying New York and all the American Army can apparently send is you and your little helicopter to save the day" kind of stories.

This level was in my head ever since I saw Libidius. I've only really been able to make it now after learning a few more little bits and pieces about the game.

The training level gets you used to all of the mechanics used in the game, powerups, rescuing people, dropping of Med supplies, and of course killing robots, before throwing you into this chaotic level.

I really hope you guys like it as this as countless hours of work went into making it.

This level would not be nearly half as good if it were not for the awesome robots donated by the community here. Thanks to mrsupercomputer, Zwollie, dajdaj03, and javi_haguse for making this level what it is! It was a brilliant contest and I would love to possibly do something similar for the sequal that would allow even more people from the community to contribute.

This is more a level co-built by LBPC and me so I thank everyone who entered the competition for making this a better level.

And of course as always....
have fun!

OK sorry for the double post but there has been a slight change of plans.

MM have retweeted my tweet that simply said "Publishing my new level "OMG Its a Robot Revolution" tonight". As people will now be searching for this particular level and find it locked Im going to call the training level "OMG Its a Robot Revolution Training Level" so people will be able to find it.

Hope this doesn't confuse things

lol, so are most people first time. Thats why I created the training level. It lets people get used to the mechanics before being thrown into the chaos

I think I got the difficulty ok. Tell me if you find it too much or too little.

Ummmm..... how do I convert GMT to EST?

I know theres 5 hours difference between Dublin and New York. Not sure if Florida is in the same time zone?

tweets and retweets... cozy. Here I am in Jersey picturing Wexfordian and the whole of Mm sitting on an overstuffed sofa sharing a blanket and a cup of coco as Ann Margret coos from the radio and tries to blame her wonton ways on the weather. Ah the powers of the holidays and a man called Wex...

Can't wait to play!!! And Congratulations too!

Seriously, this project looked big and I saw some robots from different contestants. I NEED to play that.

Sorry dude, Its actually one player only. I should have mentioned that in my original post. Sorry.

Although I was thinking of making a multiplayer minigame with 4 helicopters that try and shoot each other. That might be fun?

Oh no! The level didn't unlock! I'll try the training again...

Edit: I got in... ya!

And it was amazing! Incredible level with amazing detail. Unique gameplay!

Only thing I would suggest is that at the end you should give more detail with the 'retry to finish' thing. I think some players will only know it as 'popping' and might just leave the level there.

Ok, i played the training, and it very cool! The controls ae simple and great at the same time, very funny, but hard. Love the civilians to save Cool the militar base too!

Ok, now trying the real level. The visuals are great!
OMG it cutted an arm of the Liberty!! ARGH! Take this, and this!! Dead.

Ahah, i can see some familiar robot-face They looks great in your level!
Good the mix of attack/rescue, very funny. Anyway the level is hard! I have to destroy all these robot, no matter if they looks cool! I destroyed Zwollie's one too, it was my favourite I'm died. Ok, let's restart!
Ok, i go better this time...
Ah, i destroyed the winner too! Now i'm face to face to the last boss!
Take this, and this, i will destroy your power source.
Ok, i was wrong, you destroyed me first.
Oh, i'm a bit tired, it's 23:30 in Italy, better go to bed and try the level tomorrow!

So, the controls are simple and very intuitive, i really liked the mix of attack and rescue, the power ups and the health bars (but sometime they broke!). It's quite hard but i like it, it's a challenge! The visuals are great and the robots too, expecially the contest ones!
Yaaaawhn, i'm tired. See ya tomorrow, i'll retry your level and give a more detailed feedback! Anyway, congratulation for another great level!
Last minute edit: For the multy, i think it wil be much better a coop, it will be VERY FUNNY!

Good point! I could simply emit gas, but then people could cheat by popping themselves before it emits. mnnn.... let me think about it.

Awesome level.

I had trouble with the medi-packs though. It seemed that whenever I grabbed them, as soon as I flew away, the weight was too much for the rope and both the rope and the medi-pack "popped" out of reality - at least in the "real" level, it worked fine in the tutorial.

'Twas very strange.

Really cool level Wex! loved it. I suck at med stuff but otherwise did ok. Unfortunately I can't play it on my Morgana account (keys won't work anymore) but managed to get on the board with my alt acct

Loved the robots and sound effects especially. You never cease to amaze

I know what you mean jagrevi, you do have to go quite slow and steady with those. But my reasoning behind it is this. Its actually quite an easy level to complete. If you want, you can fly straight to the end, shoot the boss and your done. Where the playability comes in (hopefully) is trying to get all the robots, all the powerups, save the civilians and deliver med packs. So I kind of wanted varying levels of difficulties. So if your not very good and your low on health you can skip a few robots and get down to business with the boss. But if you want to go all out you can. Still though your the second person who has said that they found those things frustrating so I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

Or..... you could give them a few points for making the landing as you gas them....

Anyhooo - played it twice, and I'm going back in later tonight - I love this level! Feels totally different than anything else I've played, and with the talent you've incorporated into it the visuals and robots are eye-poppingly good.

If I could only consistenly pick up those canisters without knocking them over.... those things require pinpoint precision!

Don't take it out just because it's hard - I only mentioned it because I thought it was a bug (I don't remember it being mentioned in the tutorial, and I don't know why the medipack should just disappear/break in mid-air).

I played the tutorial level and liked that you were trying to accomplish something new. I liked everything but at times it was a bit hard to switch between shooting and grabbing with the rope. I finished it and got the key, but sadly keys do not work for me(it's been happening for months now) so I don't think I'll get to play the main level. 2009-12-17 23:59:00

mnnn. thats really annoying me now. i really didn't want people playing the level without doing the traing level first. It will take away from the level if you have to learn the basics every time you want to play. Also being thrown into such a chaotic level you'll never really get to grips with whats going on. Theres absolutely nothing left of the thermo to put in the instructions needed into the main level. I wonder how big a problem this is as i know a few other people are having the same issues.

I might just unlock it if its causing so much problems. I'll give it a day and see what happens. thanks for letting me know.

OMG

That's all there is to say about this level. Oh wait, I have ONE little con: The third upgrade in power-up is useless imo. Since you always need to shoot somewhere precisely instead of multiple targets at the same time, the second power up upgrade is presently the most effective to complete the level.

OMG!!! That was sooooo cool!!

I loved it LOVED IT!! So different so cool, and so much fun!

Scenery was amazing with all the different buildings in the background as well as what you had to navigate around. I was stunned at the pickup thingy on the chopper! wow.. Just really amazing from a techy side as well as from the scenic side.

I was sorta hoping you would get more things to pick up for bonus points, but I will be content at sharing the top score with you.

It was great seeing all the winning robot entries in there too!.. Gave me some special satisfaction to blow those guys up! LOL!! Great choices!!!

Great great level!

lol... I actually enjoyed destroying my own robot... that's weird no?

I had the chance to play this 2 days ago, and it was just awesome!!
I will check out this final version tomorrow!

EDIT :
Just played it, and it's still awesome!! (didn't had any problem with the key)
I don't know if you changed something since last time, but I found it more easy to control this time and I aced the level!
Or maybe it's because I played the tutorial so it was more obvious

Really great concept and really well-done!
I can't imagine how you made it work and the logic behind it..!
But it's very simple to play, and that's what I like!

Great visuals and scenery, the robots are awesome!
(I wished I made mine move a little more though... )

Anyway thanks Wex! Great work once again!

Wow, Wex, that was absolutely perfect, it really was. I wasn't sure what to expect since I didn't check the thread first, but man it was brilliant. I didn't have any real problems with the difficulty - I took it slow and was doing well. Halfway through, I did get curious a "helicopter-width" crack between buildings and managed to get my chopper stuck. My fault, totally, but you may wanna block that off with some invisible DM.

The robots were great, all of them, but I can't believe how well mrsupercomputer's dancing robot fit into the level. Too funny. It was a long level too! Well done there. I didn't have any problems with the mechanics, but the double grab seemed kind of indecisive at times. What were you using for that?

Anywho, 5 stars and a big ol' heart. Way to earn that crown!

The 2D shooter levels really aren't my style, but I had a lot of fun with this one. Wex told me that he was going after an old school Choplifter feel and I think he nailed it!

The controls work very well and there were only a few instances where I had trouble switching from "attack" mode to "rescue" mode. Rescue mode was really cool by the way and was a nice feature to set the level apart from other shooters in this style.

The designs of the robots were fantastic, especially the one stomping on top of the buildings! Seriously though, they all looked great and were a lot of fun to shoot down.

Again, I must admit that the level isn't my style, but fans of old school shooters like Choplifter will be extremely pleased. It's extremely well done! Nice job Wex!

Right. I'm going to be completely honest. And I know when people say that they usally leave a big gap then say "It was awesome!!" or something similar, but that's not the case for me.

Firstly, these type of levels in LBP aren't really my thing. Only being able to control movement and grabbing there's never going to be any way to do anything too complicated so that it's easy. Whilst I thought the helicopter flew really well, and the idea of having shooting and rescue mode was fantastic (and really changed the gameplay), I found it too difficult to get used to it. I never worked out how to properly change between the two modes, because half the time I pressed R1 twice it never worked. Usually took me about 3 attempts to change. Not sure if there's any more you could do to imporve it, but it is rather frustrating when you press the controls to do something and it doesn't happen.

I also wasn't too keen on the shooting gameplay. The robots look awesome (and well done to those who got theirs in the level). But to me at least it seemed like they were just shooting plasma balls randomly everywhere. Would have been nice to see different attack patterns and stuff, maybe some lasers, missels etc. It's just that I've dodged plasma balls a little too often, and I was hoping for a bit more.

Saying all that though, it IS a very visually impressive level. And from the sounds of it a lot of people enjoy it, so it might just be me with this negative interest in these type of levels. But I thought I'd let you know what I think anyway.

I gave it 4 stars.

I actually wanted to make a shmup as well, but I would've never made it with the level of quality you displayed here. I grew up playing games like this, and to see it replicated so perfectly on LittleBigPlanet of all games.... that is a true accomplishment. Unlike Libidius, this is playable and fun. Don't get me wrong, I thought Libidius was amazing for it's time, but it felt way too clunky to be anything more than a five minute demonstration of how diverse LBP's engine can be.

You've put in an incredible amount of work into this, and it shows. I couldn't give this less than 5 stars. Thanks for another inspiring level, Wex! You never cease to amaze me. Ever since your trilogy, I've been keeping an eye on your levels.

Can't wait for what the future brings us next.

Really good point! I think if I increase the rate of fire to the same as the powerup previous it will be a step up that way you keep the speed of fire but have the flexiblility when your dodging the plasma.

Thanks for your comments.

I was sorta hoping you would get more things to pick up for bonus points, but I will be content at sharing the top score with you.

So was I Right now it seems if I want to add in anything I have to delete somewhere else first. There were more people and med pack but they had to go to fit the robots in unfortunately. Delighted you liked the level!

Just played it, and it's still awesome!! (didn't had any problem with the key)
I don't know if you changed something since last time, but I found it more easy to control this time and I aced the level!
Or maybe it's because I played the tutorial so it was more obvious

Thats why I think its so important to play the tutorial level first. People find the level much more enjoyable when they don't have to think about figuring out the controls.

I couldn't play this level, the level wouldn't unlock after I beat the training.
Perhaps you should place a sticker instead, that you will need at the entrance of the next level?
Thats a good point. Although then I run the risk of loads of people pouring into the level, not having the sticker and getting frustrated they can't play it and low rating me for it. I have a steadily growing hate club as it is, not sure I want to add to the problem. What I will do however, is unlock the level after the seven days so anyone can play.

Halfway through, I did get curious a "helicopter-width" crack between buildings and managed to get my chopper stuck.

I didn't have any problems with the mechanics, but the double grab seemed kind of indecisive at times. What were you using for that?

Thanks man, yeah, forgot about that crack... was meaning to fix it but forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me. The double tap Is a bit of kit I got from a logic showcase level. Not sure who published it but I don't think its anyone from this site. Its basically a grab hooked up to an emitter that emits a right angled triangle of glass with a key on it. Its set to emit for about a second. It emits just out of reach of the key but if you emit a second one in the given time the second triangle is emitted and slides into place. If you think you have a better version Im all ears. Johnee explained his double tap to me the day of the expo but I had a little too much wine in me at that stage to remember.

The 2D shooter levels really aren't my style, but I had a lot of fun with this one. Wex told me that he was going after an old school Choplifter feel and I think he nailed it!

Thank you, Im delighted that even though its not your kind of thing you can still appreciate it for what it is. We need more people like you!

WOW, that has to be some sort of "telepathy".... I didn't play LBP for a long time now and stumble over this forum today, thinking "well, let's see if Wex released a new level"... and well, there it is... great... I just have to check this out....

Thank you for your honesty. I know this isn't going to be everyones cup of tea. I'm going to have a chat with the "big boys" of logic and see can I get a better double tap Its a really good point about the attack patterns and would be definitely nice to add in.

Unlike Libidius, this is playable and fun. Don't get me wrong, I thought Libidius was amazing for it's time, but it felt way too clunky to be anything more than a five minute demonstration of how diverse LBP's engine can be.

Thanks so much! Libidius is what inspired this level and improving on it was exactly what I was aiming for so its great to hear you say that! Sorry you had a tough time with the keys. I saw you perserveered through the tutorial level several times before it worked! Thank you!

Wex, I'm going to send you another double-tap. It's quicker and it should take about 3 seconds to swap it out. Let me know if you don't see something in the next half an hour.

I sometimes forget people can create offline. I was wondering how long this level would take since you were rarely online.
Or maybe you only made it while you were online, possible since "The good the bad" and then "Snakes on a Dame" were made so fast.

Will check out in a few hours

Wex I loved this level, it's ingeniously awesome. Absolutely loved the visuals and the robots were superb. I don't know where you get your ideas from, amazing.

I had no problem with the key, the only thing I had a problem with was my hand/brain co-ordination.

Wex-

It plays flawlessly as a simple little 2d scroller... Congratulations! I love it! I am sure it built like anything but that.

As for the double-tap, I found it slightly unruley in the trainer, but less so as I got used to the controls... Boy did I enjoy destroying the contest winners! For me, Dadja's big red looked best... but *gulp* Zwol's was toughest to beat. While robot attack patterns would have been neat... I found it great all the same. TBH I wasn't really hit very often-- if at all! (perhaps the W-EX needs some speed tweaking after all...) The background was sublime!

No issues with the key.

I really wanna design one of these 'games inside a game' levels... I think they are grandly different... one day I am going to call on you for a behind the scenes tour... I hope that it's not an unreasonable request?

Have no fear, everyone, the man (Wex himself) has an updated double grab switch. The problems with toggling between modes should soon cease. He's just got to publish and be done with it!

haha you beat me to it!

The logic guru (comphermc himself) has pimped my crazy logic out with a far superior double grab switch and it now works like a dream! Big thanks to comphermc hip hip! horah!

This is turning into a LBPC project more and more I love it!

Theres been more people donating to this level than Live Aid at this point

I had the priviledge of playing this during its early phase and I can't wait to see how it's all come together. The winning robots from your contest all looked spectacular so I'm anxious to see how you've worked them into the level. Will be back with some feedback Wex.

EDIT: Had a chance to play both the training and the full level. Wow, those were super cool-looking bots! The chopper flew pretty smoothly for the most part - although I ran into some trouble in the beginning and crashed into Lady Sack-Liberty's crown and immediately died ending the level. But I restarted and managed to save a few women and children civilians before I broke my R1 rescue saving life-line. Sorry, but I had to leave all the men behind...

Overall, 5 stars and a heart from me. You can't really expect anything less from wexfordian other than a top-notch level like this. So everyone... "get to the choppa!"

Okay FINALLY playing it. Found a few things.
-The robot in the last picture was moving around a lot and fell down before I killed him so he was really easy since he wasn't even shooting at me anymore.
-After I killed the spider looking robot, the emitter didn't disappear so it just kept shooting up in the air.
-After I killed the red robot with the little gauge, the VR material behind the gauge didn't disappear (I guess it wasn't glued or something).
-After that robot, under the giant one, the people that were there were in the ground so it made it look wierd. Also, after I killed him the sound effects he was making were still going.
I would've liked it if all the robots had health bars on them like the last one and the helicopter but it's not necessary. Attack patterns would've been cool but again, not necessary.
Sorry for all the nitpicking! I really liked the concept and all the extra little things Libi Force didn't have (although he did have multiplayer so he beat you there!). The backgrounds were great (besides a couple of stickers at the beginning that weren't colored the same as the background) and your buildings were superb. And the ROBOTS! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Overall it was very cool, 4.5 stars!

OMG It's A Must Play!
Really Good Job.
When i first played LBP i would have never thought that this was possible.
RRR3000 (was that the name? dont know anymore^^) showed the community that LBP can also be a sidescroller and i was amazed.
You even did a better job

of course hearted and 5 stars

Yeah - this was great fun. I enjoyed both levels (the tutorial is just as polished as the full level - very nice). I had no key trouble, and found the double-tap to work just fine, but I think I probably played it after the change.

I enjoyed the variety of different tasks, although I failed utterly at picking up the medi-packs (well... picking them up, not so difficult, holding onto them was the trick!). Also, the first time I tried to get the first (I think) power up, the one next to the water tower I believe, I died to the scoreboard.

Other than that I had a great time killing robots and rescuing civilians! All the robots (the contest winners as well as all your designs) looked fantastic!

Well done!

could you pleas make health on robot visible cuz sometime you don't know where to shoot and it different on each robot(head, leg) aslo, instead of floating health on helicopter could you make it ON the helipcoter it confusing. instead of pressing retry at the end, maybe put some gas behind the thin layer background?2009-12-19 10:50:00

... let me take a crack at this...

First-off PaddyJ thank you for giving the level a try. I do understand your concerns, please allow me to address them.

As for better defining each robots weakness and vulnerable points... well, tbh I thought the sound effects pretty much did just that... Almost all of the robots use their arms to try to block your plasma balls, be careful, if it's in their means they will try to deflect them back at you! and their side facing the W-ex69 is pretty vulnerable... Heck if you collect the power-ups you dont even need to aim!

As far as the Helicopters health bar is concerned, I was going for a classic arcade standard... I'm very pleased with the effect... I could have placed it on the helicopter of course, (I am Wex! Duh!) but that would have forced me to recalibrate the scale of the whole level... and TBH It's the Holidays! Me an the Mrs. Have stocked-up on all the Egg-nog and Mistletoe we've been missin' all year cause of my darn LBP affliction.

Your observation on the ending is valid and it is something I toyed with and pondered for a while... Easy to get the player in the W-ex... hard to get them out...

In the end I decided to put the control in the players hands... so it wasn't me killing them for a job well done it was simply a directive the player had to follow...

I hope this address all your concerns, and Thanks again!

H4H?

Great level. Very well done and easy to do. I really thought the medpack idea was brilliant.
One thing though. I was hoping for more a... how can I explain? More exploration that is needed. For example: Having to navigate through a tunnel or something.

Still 5 stars and would recommend to anyone.

Hiya Sir Wex! I've been biding my time before playing this. I played a very early version weeks ago, and thought it was a cool concept. Now, MrsSB has trouble with keys, so I played on another account. Okay...

I started the level all stealthy and careful. But then I went all gung-ho and steamed about all over the place. Top fun - I ended with no chopper blades, no rope and sweaty palms, but I had loads of fun.

Well done, wex. Great level.

Well that was fun! Great job on this, though I wanted to hook up the little people and swing them into my helicopter blades, boo.

Kudos for doing something completely different Wex, is there no end to your talents???

Hey Wex,

I haven't been around the game or the forums much recently, but this was an excellent way to get back into things. The idea and design was fantastic, and the visuals were superb. I thought the robot and character designs were outstanding, you've obviously poured a lot of time and effort into them and it definetly shows. I had a time controlling the chopper at first but I soon got the hang off it.

I had a little diffifculty changing from rescue mode to attack mode at times, but I think I must need more practice.

I've got loads of levels to catch up on, so I've only had the one play, but I will be back to have another few blasts later

I just like to say that the controls are really easy, the double tap is what people have problems with but i find going tap....tap (each dot representing 0.1second) works perfectly, its just ussually tou want to go tap tap and that wont work.2009-12-21 12:12:00

Respect for trying something different wex, this is a pretty unique level!
The only thing i don't understand is why you lock it?!
(you're locking your level and a lot of people won't be able to play it, keep that in mind!). Yesterday you've seemed to unlock the mainlevel, as it was on the cool pages unlocked, but half an houre later it was locked again....

cheers,

I never unlocked the main level, and the training level has never been locked?
The reason I locked the main level was to endure that people played the tutorial level first. I had no room to add this into the main level as its overheating as is.

Anyone who tested the main level before playing the tutorial level found it frustrating as they simply did not know the controls. After playing the tutorial you have a much better understanding of what it is your meant to be doing and just get right into the game without any interuptions.

For anyone who has problems collecting the key, I will unlock the main level after the 7 days are over. I just don't want frustrated players low rating me because they couldn't figure out the controls.

As it stands the main level is on page 4 of both the cool pages and the highest rated so I think its doing fine for a level of this kind (slightly more difficult and away from the norm).

I know the training level was never locked, but i saw the main level on the cool pages yesterday unlocked, weird.
I think i did your training level about 6 times, key only worked once
(always had a keyprob) anyway, looking forward to giving it another spin after the 7 days...

Just seen your nice sig Wex, and it gave me an idea..
Wouldn't that font be good for in LBP since circles are low on the thermo?

EDIT: Unless it's the one you have been talking about, I haven't played the level yet.

Hi Wex...

sorry for comment your level a little late, but I was very busy in the last time.

But I really have to say: you gave me a superb time while playing your Robot-2D-Shooter. I have to admit, that I'm very happy to see such a level, because it reminds me to the good old days of pc-games (that said, yeah, I'm an old fart *lol*). This level was some sort of "surfing in old/loved memories" and that's the greatest thing about it. The level has great visuals and nice gameplay but the real beauty (at least for me) comes with the nostalgia-factor. You gave me a great time - and that's the best a creator can create: great times for the player!

Thank you for that, Wex! I appreciate! :-)

For me: :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart

i know this is old, but new to me. i honestly usually hate hidden libidus style stuff as nothing more than clunky gimmick, but you early experience with it and camera work made your knack for it... perfect. this is playabale to a T, smooth as silk and everything looks fantastic.

it feels like the old chopper NES games combined with BangaiO. i love the enemy design and seiing them made me realize theres a high standard now. the upgrade and switch system rocks... i even like how the rescue opps look like atari sprites - makes your chopper and the scale/style of the robots more eye popping... kinda like complimentary colors.

i'd play 20 of these if youre ever up to it heh

Wow! Thanks for dragging this old one out! Looks awesome. I'll check it out later!

edit: I can't criticize a level when I have no idea how it was made. That little helicopter is beyond brilliant!

I love retro! The robots rocked my world! And I love that they're all contest winners... A real collaboration. Well done, everybody!

Just an absolutely mindblowing level. Awesome!
