Dead Memories - Part One

Dead Memories - Part One RoseScythe
With midnight comes the choking heat.
Flames render the silence.
Clutched in darkness she sleeps.
Our Lady Overkill...
all
I just published this level. It took me around two weeks to create and follows the same theme as the Silent Hill level from my 'DefMunky666' account.

It's a Puzzle/horror inspired by exalted_yawn's ingenious levels; set in an abandoned hospital and borrows elements from games like 'Silent Hill' and movies like 'The Ring' etc. The level features a highly detailed, creepy atmosphere, tricky puzzle elements and a few moments that will get your heart pounding.

It also includes a new multi-floor elevator design that I've been working on.

Hope you all enjoy.

I'll do 5 F4F's

Hi, thought Id play your level based on the title alone (one of my favorite Slipknot songs lol). I try to be as critical as possible with every level I play however I struggled immensely with yours!!

-Visual style is absolutely amazing, well done!
- Amazing atmosphere and lighting
- I jumped a couple of times, that rarely happens in LBP!
- Very Silent hill-esque

- Took me a while to work out how to get out of the first room, you could hide a light behind that vent so that when you get into the second room it lights up and shines through the vent a bit, may make it easier for people to recognise and allow them to play the rest of this fantastic level.
- For the first bit of dialogue use the magic mouth tool as it neatens things up a bit - minor niggle!
- Remove the bit about community prizes at the start, it detracts from the mood a bit although I can see why you put it in
- Was dissappointed when it ended, have you hit the top of thermometer or are you planning on expanding?

Overall though I have to say this is one of the best levels I have played, congrats!

No need to F4F as I havent made a level recently!

Thanks for the input. I'll take these into consideration. Unfortunately the thermo maxed out, so look out for Part 2 when it's published.2009-12-19 20:15:00

Just played your level and I had to put back my lower jaw in because it was on the floor. Actually, I noticed my jaw only after finishing the level because I was so immerse while playing and this until the end that I couldn't feel any pain or something missing in my face. That's a chance I also had my blood pressure medecine by the hand because I might have died along the way from a couple of great scares. But you know what's the best? It's when I clicked "find more by this author" and realised that this was your first level.
Took my lower jaw from the floor again!

Pros:

-Nice visuals and details -- good stickers work. I love the notes.
-Ambiance is really well done. Really felt like Silent Hill.
-Grab the door and then it opens + next room lit up. This is GREAT.
-Excellent elevator. I don't even know how you did it.

Cons:

- I couldn't figure out the painting puzzle. You know, where you chose wich one was dead. I made it by trying until I succeed. I know you collect those "wanted" papers with advices on them but the problem is that I wasn't able to re-read them later. Since I couldn't remember them I couldn't make the puzzle in a "legit" way.

-Not sure if that was wanted but I walked to the right there and died from gaz. I really couldn't see it coming.

http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/qq262/RangerX_photos/pwned.jpg

-I don't really know how to reach those bubbles. I suppose it by that glitched higher jump technique. I wouldn't make use of such finnicky techniques.

http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/qq262/RangerX_photos/howtojump_.jpg

-I love secrets. More secrets would have been nice.

-Wish there was juuuust a bit more interaction with the envirronement in general.

To make a long story short, you impressed me there. Honestly. I wasn't prepared and it's been a while that I've played this kind of levels and you sure didn't disappoint. You new how to push a scene, making awesome sound ambiances and immerse me until the end. Now I really am impatient for the following levels!!

Cheers for the great feedback.

The hanged man puzzle was actually an afterthought as you can probably tell. I might make it so you can reread the cryptic notes after you pick them up. I have a tiny sliver of thermo left.

Yeah, you were actually supposed to run left after the locker opens in the sub basement, the entire sequence was the most intense one in the level.

As for secrets/bubbles, again I had no intention of even including score bubbles, but decided to before publishing. I'll see what I can do...

You know what I would do with a level of this type? I would have bubbles available only by tricky ways or in secrets. Reward for exploration and thorough thinking through the walktrough. It would be nice to see on the scoreboard if there's actually players ranking in everything.
I don't mind you should change the current level, i'm just sharing my point of view since I agree with you about the bubbles being somewhat out of place in such levels.

WOW! This is an awesome jaw dropping super creepy level. The level is dripping with atmosphere and the level of detail to make it look and feel like an abbandoned hospital is superb. The sounds that you used through out the level where brilliant and added to the atmosphere.

Finding the items that are placed in the level and having an idea of where you need to go to next is easy to understand. The elevator was genious and you made it simple for the player to navigate from floor to floor. I had to use 'Trial and Error' with the paintings puzzle although it didn't put me off the level at all. Some people may get to this puzzle and just give in. However, I did a 2nd playthrough and understood the clues that I found and completed the puzzle without a problem. I read someone elses feedback further up where he/she mentioned losing a life because of gas. This happened to me on my 1st playthrough but on my 2nd playthrough I went the correct way and believe me, my Sackboy ran as fast as his little stumpy legs could carry him and I didn't feel safe until I reached the top of the stairway. This is the first level on LBP that I've genuinly been alert to the scares that await me in the next room.

I want to finish by saying I'm surprised and disappointed that the level has had so very few plays and I urge other people to experience it.

5 stars and a heart to both level and author. Can't wait for Chapter 2.

You really should keep republishing this level until the end of the first seven days. If only for more people to enjoy this.

@ Incinerator22, I used a Dark Matter sheet to block the elevator but didn't bother glueing (sp?) down the books.

The Sequel is in the works as we speak. Thanks for all the support.

Good, I like the tweaks you made, especially bubbles related ones. Did score the best score though because I think I died once. Not sure.

Anyways, I'll be patiently waiting for the sequel.

Gluing down books will save up on thermo, or whatever you do to minimize surface detection. Stiff rods would work too, that'd probably be easier with the crazy-good layering you have 2009-12-22 14:52:00

WTF!! Signed in today to find that this level had been moderrated. I published it less than 2 weeks ago aswell. I have no idea why this was taken down, it wasn't offensive in any way.

Between the BS Moderration Policy, unwarranted griefing and copy-publishers, there isn't much reason to keep creating.

So much for trying to make a comeback...

Nope, just a message saying it was moderrated. Maybe a few overly PC soccer moms griefed it for giving their 7 year olds nightmares. Lol, I hope not, I hate sugar coating my levels...2010-01-09 14:44:00

Oh, man, that completely stinks! I was soooo looking forward to Part 2. What an awesome level. There wasn't really anything that anyone should find too scary or violently graphic.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I could understand if you didn't want to invest all the time needed to complete Part 2.

Moderation shouldn't be much of a problem since you can republish.

Still it's bad they moderate such level. This goes against creativity. Are in Europe? maybe it's because of the new rating for the game? (PEGI 7+)

Nah, New Zealand. You know... The smaller, better version of Aussie I'll see if I can capture it an move it to another level seeing as how it won't let me simply republish.2010-01-09 21:30:00

Played this last night and thought it was really cool. The atmostphere was very creepy, and quite similar in some ways to my own horror-themed level, Tenement (but don't bother searching for it...I locked it and threw the key away).

Pros:
The quality of your artistic design and the overall atmostphere were astounding. I can see that you put a lot of time and care into scenery building/sticker creation, and your subtle but effective use of the back layer glitch added a lot of depth to your scenes without obfuscating the "true" path. Nice rain effect at the end there too.

I loved the "find key to unlock door" logic and thought it was a nice visual touch having each door emit an open version to replace the closed one. It was a concept that really complimented the photorealistic visual style. I was thinking I might borrow that idea from you...would you mind?

Plenty of secrets to make exploration/experimentation worth the effort, and most of them quite well hidden too

The one-time-only scare events were well orchestrated and genuinely gave me the jitters in some places. I like how you only get fleeting glimpses of the ghostly creatures in the dark, and there were times when I wasn't sure if I'd actually seen something or just imagined it.

Impressive lift mechanic. Not super-technical (I'm guessing notched wheel or strong winch/weak piston logic?), but implemented in a very effective and user-friendly way.

Cons:

Although casting the level in such darkness serves to enhance the visual atmostphere in many scenes, there are other scenes which demand more interactivity with the environment and it's here that gameplay becomes badly hindered by the inability to see just what the hell my sackboy is bumping into. There are some awkward layer transitions in this level, and the excessive darkness just complicates what should be a simple matter of moving through a door to enter a room. The thought even crossed my mind at one point that you should have named the level "A Stab In The Dark"

Some areas of scenery have tight gaps that sackboy can slip into and get trapped or squished. That type of death is unfair and a big faux-pas in terms of gameplay. During my first run through I died three times in this way!

Jumping up steps is annoying and unrealistic. A person wouldn't normally ascend a staircase by jumping. You can easily resolve this issue by gluing a long, super-thin layer of invisible material across the diagonal length of each staircase, helping sackboy to run up the steps instead of hopping. A minor issue, but still...

The condemned men (?) puzzle was quite obscure and I only solved it by trial and error. Perhaps you could give the player more guidance here.

Don't be put off by the negative aspects of my critique though. The pros of this level greatly outweighed the cons, and the few aspects I had issue with did not detract from the overall experience or affect the 5-star rating I gave you. I felt deeply immersed in the atmostphere, and having sampled this tasty little morsel of a level I'm looking forward to playing more of your creations. Keep up the good work!

You're kidding right ? I've seen the logic for this in his level showcasing the lift itself and it's way too complex for my brain to comprehend.

Thanks for the in depth critique Ungreth. At present I'm rebuilding the level from scratch and will delete the old one when I publish it. Most of the puzzles were added as an afterthought and the storyline is basically nonexistant so I have nowhere to go if I create any sequels.

The elevator is pretty simple in its mechanism. It uses a notched wheel to select floors and then filters that choice through a convoluted or switch that emits a dissolvable block telling the lift to either go up or down. Once it gets to the floor of choice, this switch dissolves and the lift resets.

I had this stage in my hearted stages and then it was gone, Im glad I found it again! In my opinion the level is excellent the way it is and I passed it the whole way through. Atmosphere is excellent and am anxiously waiting for a sequel mate.2010-01-25 02:32:00

this is probably the scariest level on LBP at the moment and is the only one that made me jump well done, great visuals, dead girl that climbs the stairs made me swear in shock as i was trying to get away from her (that freaked me out alot) and i like horror films and scary stuff lol2010-02-08 00:07:00

Cheers Geddez, the concept of that sequence was what spawned the rest of the level. Unfortunately I didn't leave much room for a storyline of sorts so I'm currently rebuilding the level from scratch and will incorporate a much deeper storyline, more thought out puzzles and hopefully a host of new scares.2010-02-08 23:46:00

Just now got around to playing this level.

Some really great, simple, scary moments going on all over the place. Nice use of keys in prizes. I got suck in a storage room behind some shelving support beams, but I just had to pop. You scared me a bit with that "fire girl!" I haven't got time for an extended review, but I gave it 5 stars a heart. Great atmosphere.
