The Sackies - Best use of Audio in a level

Archive: 25 posts

The Sackies ? Celebrating the highest level of achievement amongst Players, Creators and Sharers on LittleBigPlanet.

There are various ways to use Audio in a level, and various tools to help you. Some people go above and beyond the call of duty and use audio in new and exciting ways, or just in a really solid and impressive manner. This award is for the best use of Audio in a level ? both Music and Sound Effects.

And the nominees are?

* The Frog Chorus: A musical delight by IceMaiden and Khalith_
* Little big drum sequencer ?with new temp control? by barb_marley
* Roll Over Beethoven by Smearedink
* To Zanarkand by Kirathian (probably the first music level)

And the winner, as decided by Audio Molecule, is?

Roll Over Beethoven by Smearedink

Now don't get me wrong here, I don't mean to put down the nominees or winner (especially seeing as I have not played a single one of these levels), but are these all music levels? Surely best use of audio in a level should encompass more than just music levels. I've seen some amazing atmospheric, emotive stuff done with sound in more generic levels, I can't really see why that use of sound would be completely overlooked?

Congrats to everyone though!

Well if you look at IceMaidens level you'll see its more than "just a music level". It has some of the best scenery/character design in a level ever. So to have the two combined in a single level makes it a joy to play through.

Just watched the video of the winning one.

I thought 'oh that's cool you can run across and make your own music' and just presumed that switch to the right was an elevator to take you to the scoreboard....then they pulled the switch...WOW.

That roll over beethoven one is really cool. I played that a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away! ^_^

I'm actually quite happy for icey, as she's been having a very hard time of it recently. I hope this news will cheer her up!

Congrats everyone!

As I said - I've not played it, so you can understand me thinking something billed as a "musical delight" would be a music level But then at the same time, the character design has nothing to do with use of audio - which is what is being recognised here.

I don't want anyone to think I'm looking down on music levels (I didn't say "just a music level", as wex quotes!). Far from it, they don't interest me but I totally respect the skill and effort and time that goes into creating something like that and it's certainly well beyond my skills. I'd also probably argue that an award for best musical composition in LBP would be justified. I'm just saying that, on the surface of it, all other use of audio seems to have been marginalised here.

I always kinda liked this music level, personally. ^_^ I wish I knew how these nominations worked, because I would have sent this one in:

(I didn't say "just a music level", as wex quotes!).

Sorry I misplaced the quotation marks there, my bad!

What I meant to say was "Well if you look at IceMaidens level you'll see its more than "just" a music level."

I wasn't trying to imply you said it, I was just trying to point out it was ummmm.... more than "just" a music level

That one was AMAZING!! Always loved that one and now that you mention it, a real shame it didn't get included among the nominees as well as it had amazing visuals to go along with a beautiful rendition of the song.
That was, in fact, the first time I ever saw a music level accompanied by good visuals.

Very few people know about that level. It really is a shame. That girl just joined this site after squirlin forced her to, so maybe mm will notice her stuff now. She's a brilliant creator. ^_^

I have to say, though, I'm rather happy about Icey's level getting on there. Her levels are so beautiful. I haven't played the frog level yet, but I did play her crystal cave music level and I was completely in awe.

That's pretty cool IceMaiden got a nomination, the other 3 levels are all really old (pretty sure the drum one is...) and her level just came out like a week ago.

She got it out just in time.

I think this should be named "best music level" or something like that. It seems more descriptive and appropriate. "Best use of sound" is something WAYYYYYY wider and not related directly to music levels really.

just my 2 cents, no hard feelings.

^I have to agree with that, as it was something I was always exceedingly anal about in my own work and how I judged others... sound effect use was integral to immersion and believability, the final polish IMO.

I'm pleased with Rollover Bheetoven, and happy for the nominees included (especially IceMaiden), but dissappointed that deboerdave's genius music following system, entrancing and all-original tunes, and addictive platforming experiences he created using them went unmentioned. I remember when I told Garnet Lee of 1up.com about that, he was literally flabbergasted because it preempted the secret info about possible music creation capabilities for LBP PSP that he was slyly hinting at, but not allowed to disclose on the 1upYours podcasts.

Dang, sorry Icemaiden...

Your level is the greatest music level yet in my opinion. I guess the music wasn't made to its fullest potential, but it was a minor sacrifice for the incredible scenery. Congratz!

I agree with rtm as well. Also, why weren't any of thejollyrajah's levels nominated? Sony is really ticking me off if it's them running this...

I agree... some of them are really dated and old. IceMaiden's and SmearedInk's deserve their spots, though.

And the sequencer is nothing special, I've seen MANY come before it. And done better.

Zanarkand? Cmon. That in no way represents the best music levels out there. It wasn't even the first music level. In fact, if you want to see great music levels, go check out the user Chaaruzu. He uses my style but takes it to the next level!!! Here is some of his work-

Whoever made these nominations obviously has no clue of the best stuff out there, or what makes a good music level.

I pretty much agree with that... They could have recognized more levels, they only had 4 nominations.

Also the way they described the category made it seem like they were going to recognize some playable levels with good use of SFX and music.

It's too bad I didn't come up with the idea I'm working on now sooner, or it may have been a contender for this one.

Congrats to those who made it! Great levels, and quite inspirational to those we'll be seeing this next year I'm sure.
