Bird of Paradise by jeffcu28

Dear LBPC community,

"Ride a Bird of Paradise, leap over magnolias, grab spinning orchids, avoid electrified dews, escape pitcher plants, and pollinate a hibiscus flower to discover a rare plant in this overgrown rainforest. Tomato suit and sunglasses recommended!"

This is my very first completed LBP level, but please don't let this dissuade you from playing it. I've worked tremendously long and hard and forfeited sleep and study to finish this...

Being my first level and in light of the bugs in create mode, I stuck with mostly platforming, but I did include somewhat of a puzzle in the end. And because of the open layout in some parts, there might be a slight chance of escaping the game. Please criticize and suggest as you see appropriate so that I may grow as a level designer...However, as with most other creators, my thermometer almost busted open so adjustments might be troublesome. I also had problems fitting everything I wanted in, including the LBPC logo.

Anyways I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor. Here are some photos I captured with my camera (sorry for the poor quality):

P.S. I share my PSN account with my little brother so the other levels under my PSN name aren't actually mine...

Wow!
i am speechless...

anyway: wonderful ideas, wonderful look, nice mechanics, challenging in the right way, good lenght.

in detail:I really liked the idea of the moving background and the growing/rising flower!

tipps: u can get stuck or out of the level at some points. maybe u should improve that at some parts

Hey Arrestor and Sackwise,

I am a big fan of both "LittleBigVolcano" and "The Many Worlds," and consider them to be some of the best looking levels out there so far. I am so honored that both of you amazing creators took note of the visuals I made. I knew I couldn't deliver logic masterpieces like some other LBPC creator levels, so I worked diligently to compensate with the visuals...and quite frankly, I loved the corner editor tool on the PSP. I guess I shall do the same on the PS3 instead of cutting shapes out...

tipps: u can get stuck or out of the level at some points. maybe u should improve that at some parts

That is a valid point indeed, and it was kind of necessary to accommodate for the "open," rather than compartmentalized, layout I was going for. I tried to put horrible gas at every point one falls off the flowers, but it's possible that I missed a spot. Was there a specific region you completely fell off the course?

Hey dajdaj,

Coming from you, those words are priceless. You simply must get a PSP if you ever have the money...the PSP version still has charm...but its totally portable. I think this is how I actually managed to finish this level.

Will this ever make it to the PS3? Well, I thought this level was a lot easier to produce on the PSP due to the managable layers, more forgivable thermometer when it comes to materials, and an amazing corner editing tool. I've tried making levels on the PS3 before, but the sheer awesomeness of designers like you intimidates me...but if I ever have the time and courage to do so, I will try making a PS3 version...just for you!

Oh snaps! I missed a spot...thanks Arrestor! I'll try to fix this issue after I get more feedback to see if I should change anything else...

I don't think I'm a great creator, I only made one real (little) level so far...

There's nothing to be intimidated about, if you're talented with a PSP,
you still be with a PS3... anyway it was just a little funny suggestion, I know it's not easy and time-consuming

Downloaded this one yesterday night but only got to play through it once.
Having played it through a couple more times I can tell you that this level is charming and visually stunning. For a PSP level, with all the bugs and difficulties - this one rocks! I love the length and the challenge in places. Throughout the level is also lovely visuals and I'm glad I downloaded it.

My little six-year-old brother and I, everytime we play a level that intoxicates us with awe, we say "I hate this creator" to verbalize our envy...and after we played superSACK Market, we really, really, really hated you dajdaj.

You are too modest for your own good. I know exactly who you are and your level (nice job on your Sack costume art by the way!) Although you only published one level, and it didn't showcase any sophisticated logic mechanisms, it was still triumphant in its creativity, which makes you a "great creator"...at least in my eyes...

Hey Coxy224,

Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I was afraid my level would be too confusing and/or frustrating so I'm glad to hear that you thought it was appropriate in its difficulty. I'm also a fan of your levels, both on the PS3 and PSP, so your comment means a lot to me. Thanks!

I've just played the Bird of paradise and it's really got me hooked! For me, it has all the qualities of a really addictive level: great platforming, danger, bubbles, and great visuals (the organic-shaped environment and massive flowers in particular). The toughest parts were the rising platform/gas dodge section, the 'Run!' section, and I had a problem jumping off the top of the rising and falling green platform section as well for some reason.

But overall, the level's size, challenge and variety make it feel like a real adventure. I shall be playing it quite a bit more!

Wow. I played your level one hour ago and I'm still impressed by the exquisite visuals and the impressive gameplay. Congratulations for this amazing level, I enjoyed all of it. The part with the moving background was very original, not to mention the well-thought puzzles, specially the last one inside the flower. Well done for mixing the beautiful environment, the platforming bits and the puzzles, you manage to make them really cohesive.

Some parts were hard without being frustrating, which I liked. The only real flaws were those sections where you could jump out of the scenery, but overall it is a perfect level.

5 stars, hearted level and author.

Me, create a level?

You've obviously mistaken me for somebody with imagination and creativity.

I'm an Engineer, I had those removed.

Now, a sense of humor, I still have some semblance of that left over someplace around here.

I've lost my sense of youthful idealism, and also possibly my marbles.

I wish someone would help me find them.

Huh? How on earth did I miss this? I thought I had already seen all the uber-epic levels, but clearly I managed to skip over this one. It's brilliant! I adore the flower motif and theme of the level. The serene visuals and relaxing atmosphere combine nicely with some tricky (but great) platforming. There were a few areas where I wasn't totally sure what to do next, but I chalk that up largely to my gimpy platforming abilities.

This level really was a treat to play, but what surprised me most is that many of the flowers are spitting images of their real world counterparts and are clearly recognizeable. I played this before reading your level description, and my jaw fell open when I saw neatly defined, good-looking orchids... phaelenopsis to be precise. I then really started paying attention and picked out the pitcher plants, hibiscus, and others. Clearly you paid more attention in biology class than I ever did. I really love that you added so much detail despite the fact that most players will likely never notice it. However, that kind of detail just makes the level feel right even if you don't know exactly why. As they say, the devil is in the details. The only area I had a problem with was the drop down into the flower following the jetpack pollination puzzle. I kept getting electrocuted about 3/4 of the way down, presumably by the area on the left side of the stem. I eventually figured out to hold right on the analog stick and fell down all the way with no problem.

So anyway, superbly crafted level here. It's a heck of a lot of fun to play, a feast for the eyes and ears, and pretty long as well. No-brainer 5 stars, hearted, and a creator heart.

I played this level during my wait for the LBP PS3 update (I haven't played for a while, so I had a lot of downloading). I could only say three words to describe this level:

Life Is Beatiful

Review
Jeffcu28 has showed the world that the smallest of flowers look beatiful inside and out. I love the growing flower part, where you dodge the gas of death during the extend. Also, I couldn't believe my eyes when Jeff detailed the area perfectly. I have no doubt in my mind that the level almost overheated during Jeff's creative time in the level. I personally am honored to have gotten the highscore in the level, and I hope that everyone can play this "one of the most artistic levels out there" level.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a well deserved heart, both level and creator.

Peace

Hey Taffey,

I was anxiously waiting for your review, and I figured you were just exhausted from your trip and from finishing your second level. I knew it would come eventually, and it did!:hero:

I really love that you added so much detail despite the fact that most players will likely never notice it. However, that kind of detail just makes the level feel right even if you don't know exactly why. As they say, the devil is in the details.

All I need is one person to appreciate the details, and I will be satisfied. And guess what, you're it--and I'm glad it was you. We share the same keen eye for details, a characteristic I fondly use to describe myself in personal statements--it's both my strength and weakness.

And speaking of details, may I once again mention the exquisite dents and scratches on your rocket and canon? That was bliss printed on stickers...

The only area I had a problem with was the drop down into the flower following the jetpack pollination puzzle. I kept getting electrocuted about 3/4 of the way down, presumably by the area on the left side of the stem. I eventually figured out to hold right on the analog stick and fell down all the way with no problem.

Yes, I was frustrated with that area too. My thermometer was maxed out, and I needed to ration out the last one eighth of a tick mark I had left. I guess that spot had the least priority, but if I had any space left, I certainly would have covered that one electric side of the flower pistil.

Anyways, thank you so much for giving such an in depth review, it means a lot to me. You're an amazing LBPC citizen, if there ever was one, and I look up to you as a creator and a reviewer.

I used to think I was like a small shop owner and you were Wal-Mart when it comes to LBP levels, but you made me realize that we're all the same chain of stores dependent on each other's successes and failures. You just made my stock that much more valuable, and for that I thank you...

Hey CyberSora,

I'm so happy you got that message from my level. Life is beautiful, but hardly anyone realizes that these days. Anyways, I'm honored that you foregrounded the level's artistry: art has always been a hobby of mine, and I considered pursuing a career in it, but alas, I'm premed. Oh well, I'll be a paintin' doctor. Hehe. Visual therapy using LBP levels, oh yeah! Who knew the cure to cancer all this time was art?

Anyways, I'm flattered to finally get my own CyberSora Review: I will cherish it as a crown for the PSP.

Happy Holidays to both of you,

I agonized over both the rocket and cannon. (No, too dented! Agh, not dented enough! Stupid duct tape is in the wrong place. Wrong color stain!) I knew each piece would only be seen for a few seconds, but just couldn't leave them alone. I saw a lot of effort on the corner edits and stickers in your level, and I can really appreciate the time you took to make it just so.

LBP just keeps getting better and better the more time we all spend on it.

Hey Lleonard,

Thanks. I have an idea of a new level based on Japanese ink paintings, but I've decided to postpone it until the bugs are fixed and when my life is less hectic.

I'm still looking forward to playing more of your levels though! Both for the PS3 and the PSP using the new materials. Happy creatin'!

Wow, I just love Japan & Japanese art, so now I can't wait to play your next level. But I understand that you prefer waiting until Sony fixes the Editor.

As for me, I've got two ideas, one for the PS3 (using the Water feature) and one for the PSP... I don't know which one I'll start first. The PS3 Editor looks very intimidating now after getting used to the PSP version.

Heh, that's funny, I kept trying over and over to get there, but I couldn't. Until I found out I had to go left.

I wouldn't have minded a checkpoint in that spot, I died so many times. Anyway, enough about my bad platforming skills. Looks lovely, and it seemed to go on and on and on (in a good way). It's a great piece of work. There's just one thing puzzling me: why is it called Bird of Paradise?

Hey Rogar,

This is perhaps one of my favorite flowers...and it is called a "Bird of Paradise." Kinda looks like a bird, doesn't it? It was my original inspiration, and I think you can figure out where I used it in the level.

Heh, that's funny, I kept trying over and over to get there, but I couldn't. Until I found out I had to go left.

On an earlier version of this level, that section wasn't blocked off--as seen in JKThree's youtube video--and one could fall out. I have since republished it to fix that section. Yeah, and sorry about the lack of checkpoints in that area. You are right, it is a hassle to start all the way back to the switch when the "heliconia" already grew. However, I had put a checkpoint on the top left (to indicate where to go) and I thought adding one at the bottom would put them too close together. In addition, my thermometer was already maxed out. Anyways, that's something I'll pay attention to more in the future.

Thanks for playing and your feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Ok, I want to start off by giving myself a slap on the wrist for not playing this level yet. You (Jeff) are one of the best, if not the best, members of LBPC's active PSP body, and you deserve feedback more than anyone. However, I have been so busy with Now and Then and Lost at Sea that I haven't had the chance to play as many levels as I would have liked. Now I finally had the chance to sit down and play this level and WOW is it great!

I don't really know what I expected from it, but it was better than I could have ever dreamed. This level is seriously one of my very favorite on PSP! The art style is astounding, and everything about it just feels fresh and unique. I loved the part where you race the rolling ball, and the puzzle with the balls you launch into the air and have to carry into the trays, and I could just go on and on. And on top of that, the level is relatively long, which is great since I enjoyed every second of it!

Sadly, I feel that the only reason that this level is not on Page 1 of highest rated is that it is actually challenging at parts. I believe that this is the same reason that Lleonard_Pler's new level (Garden of the Golden Apple) has fallen below page 2. It is very sad that levels need to be created to the lowest common denominator of players in order for them to be rated highly enough to be noticed by the majority. I am personally happy with the difficulty, and it was one of the main aspects that made it one of the best levels on PSP. I will look forward to your next level (well, I guess your anti-H4H level was your next, but the one after that).

If playing my levels intervenes with you from churning up those great levels, then by all means I give you the permission to skip my levels . Seriously though, don't feel guilty as I have absolutely nothing against you.

And thank you very much for your kind words. At first I joined LBPC just so I can find those hidden, quality levels on the PS3 with no intention of ever participating in F4F. I loved the concept, but I thought I wasn't worth it because I had virtually no experience in making levels. Level creating on the PS3 is just so intimidating, and whenever I started a project and played other levels during breaks, I just lost hope of ever achieving any level of greatness.

And then LBP PSP came with a more manageable level editor, and I decided to finally finish a level. It was only when I published my first ever level and a thread here that I realized how valuable feedbacks were in developing as a creator. So I guess that's why I try to give feedback for as many levels as I can in hopes of leading other creators to their own path for achieving greatness.

Actually, I don't really care where it is on highest rated considering that this was my very first level. Creating for "the lowest common denominator" was certainly something I learned after hearing feedback, so I'll definitely put that in mind when I create future levels. I think the warm reception from experienced creators like you and being featured surpassed any expectations I ever had for this project. But anyways, I do have an idea for my next level and have most of it worked out in my head...now I only need to find the time to actually start it...

Humbled,

That was a really great looking and fun level. I have to admit I just got stuck at the end, it seems to indicate to drop down through the long red flower stem, but I kept falling into an electric death. I thought it might benefit from more sound effects, but other than that, well done and thanks for a splendid level 2010-01-28 03:54:00

Hey Tanuki75,

Thanks for playing my level, and for your review. Yes, others have mentioned that spot, and I didn't intend on it to be as frustrating as it turned out. I really wanted to cover that side of the pistil up, but a maxed out thermo prevented me from doing so. I see you're an experienced level creator on the PS3. Let me know if you ever make one on the PSP, I'll be sure to review it...just as soon as I finish my next level. Again, thanks for playing .

Best,

This is a really beautiful level with some great design touches and nice gameplay elements. The flowers are wonderfully drawn and the whole experience is serene and exotic. I didn't, however, get to take a ride on any birds of paradise as the description seemed to promise...

Regardless, very good work. 5*

Hey salieri,

Thank you so much for the kind words. One of my goals with the level was to definitely pull the player out of this world, and I guess from your experience I did! And sorry for the confusion, but if you look on page 3 of this thread, I posted a picture of a "Bird of Paradise," which amusingly is a flower and not an actual bird. Hehe. And sorry for the delay in reviewing your latest level. I've been busy lately but will get to it very soon.

Take care,
