Twas the Night Before Christmasthanatos989
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=876&pictureid=9618Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house. . . Thus begins the poem by Clement Clarke Moore that many of has have loved since childhood. This level recites the poem in its entirety and offers some fun game play as well. If you're looking for Christmas themed levels to enjoy over the holidays, then might I suggest this one to add to your merriment. Merry Christmas.

A lot of work went into contriving the staging and layout. It runs rather like a movie with a couple game play areas as you move through the poem. I wanted to strike a balance between playablity and highlighting the poem. In all truthfulness though, creating the characters and sets was the easy part. Learning how to manage all the magic mouths and rig the timing of various events, like teleporters, was the real challenge.

If anyone can suggest some ideas to make this work smoother please let me know. If anything breaks and you can't complete the level, let me know that as well. Thank you.

OMG you have to be joking... this is exactly the idea i have been planning for the online create competition! Oh well... thats that level down the drain!

I'll give it a go and see how uv done!

Edit: Yeah pretty good... character design was superb however i didn't think the poem was spread out enough. The level could have been longer and with more challenging areas too!

For f4f could you please try my new level: Planet X.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing what you have to say about my level.

I had to give this level a go, because I love this poem.

Overall I felt it works as a retelling of the story with classic LBP cuteness. The snowflake landing was a nice and atmospheric introduction, and the actual main scenes e.g santa by the chimney and the people in bed are done really nicely with lots of lovely detail to make you smile a christmassy smile. However I do think you could improve the overall look of the kind of joining sections, e.g going up the stairs and walking from room to room with a little more detail and variation to shapes and maybe some decoration. They looked a little bland and square/boxey, and it would be so much better if the atmosphere that you capture in the main scenes was carried throughout the level.

The little bits of game play were fun and I enjoyed spinning round the sugarplums dancing round their heads. If you were able to incorporate any more game play bits it would make it even more enjoyable.

I did feel that you could use music more to support the storyline, e.g perhaps have it build at certain points such e.g when Santa appears by the chimney, and fade as he flies away into the night?

Also one last point... I fell behind the level right at the beginning (after landing from snowflake, but before entering house) and had to restart

Overall cute and engaging but needing a bit more consistency of atmosphere.

I'm doing F4F and would love to hear your comments on my level the Puzzling Pine of Puzzlewood. (link in sig)

This level was a great and clever level to play.

It has an excellent and beautiful start, as you fly down from the snowflake which really sets the high standard that this will be a beautiful and creative level. You can tell much thought and time has been put in, as you can see all the details and beauty that each small object holds. I think after entering the house and then seeing the mouse and talking about it really set the 'night time/silence' theme to it, which was excellent.

The Poetry was one of my favourite parts. It's extremely clever and well thought about. It tells the story in a unique way and I think it couldn't have been more pleasant to read. I liked how the details where described in this way as well.

The Reindeer where also one of my favourite parts. They were also very clever and well constructed. I loved their red colored coats. Santa and the sled were all very well done. It showed your wonderful and creative use of stickers.

I did not come across any problems, but I think you could put some christmas lights on your christmas tree to make it stand out a bit more, although I'm not sure if you have to buy them in a pack or if they're free.

Overall, an excellent, creative, enjoyable level to play. You used everything very well and is a level that really brought the christmas feeling and spirit into it. Well Done!

Thanks to everyone for the excellent advice. Ainsley, as to the tree, confession time. I had to let my little girl do that bit. She soooooo wanted to help

As for the poem not being spread out. Yeah, it was tough though since I was battling a thermo that didn't seem to want me to get the poem in completely. Darn thermo.

Anyway, I will wait for a few more comments then I'll make some changes.

Hey Thanatos!

As you know, I gave your level a try yesterday. I have a few thoughts:

Pros:
- Great character design
- Snow flakes looked awesome
- Who wouldn't like this story?
- I really liked the Santa and Reindeer cut scene

Suggestions:
- Just to the right of where the snow flake drops the player, there is an easy way for the player to drop out of the intended area. I realize you needed space for the snow flake to drop, but there are a couple ways of fixing this. You could somehow design that part so no one can get to the back layer, or you could just make some invisible dark matter to block the path (that would be easiest). If I'm unclear as to where this is, just let me know and I'll explain further.
- The first time I played the door to the house didn't work correctly. However, I do know that I grabbed the big tree to the right of the house and I heard a sound. Then I grabbed the tree with the grab switch and saw some stuff dissolve, but a black area was left, making it impossible for me to enter the house. So I restarted the level and went right for the tree with the grab switch, and everything worked correctly.
- I agree with TheAdipose who said, "However I do think you could improve the overall look of the kind of joining sections, e.g going up the stairs and walking from room to room with a little more detail and variation to shapes and maybe some decoration. They looked a little bland and square/boxey, and it would be so much better if the atmosphere that you capture in the main scenes was carried throughout the level."

Overall:
It's a nice and relaxing level that puts you in the mood for the holidays

Thanks everybody. I made a few changes. I put some invisible dark matter to rpevent falling behind the snow material. I did some more stickering for atmospher. Also, I had two sets of reindeer and sleigh. I deleted one and put the last set of mouths on the original set. Those reindeer are serious thermo-hogs.

Anyway, I need to think more about the music. This is my biggest area of weakness. I'd love some musical help.

Pretty good it is christmas like enough for me anyway. Like someone said earlier it really does put you in the mood for christmas. It lets you relive the poem that is so close to us.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy.

Anyways, I enjoyed this level alot. The character design was excellent, I think you nailed the atmosphere with it. I liked the poem aswel, made me excited for Christmas!

There was only two complaints/suggestions I have and that's to change the music a little halfway into the level (it got a bit tedious) and it was a little short with not really any challanges in it.
But then again I don't think you wanted to make a level with alot of challanges in it so I think I'm just nitpicking. Lol.

Overall I found it fun and enjoyable. **** stars.

And by the way, Merry Christmas!

I'll keep this short and sweet...

I loved it. The atmosphere, the visuals, the poem - wonderful stuff. I can see a great deal of creativity here, and I'm so pleased you had some 'help'! Creating with your family must be a fantastic experience.

Well done, top notch.
