DLC Idea - FX Pack!
Archive: 20 posts
Here's my idea for a new pack... the FX pack! Basically, it gives creators more time to work on fun levels and less time worrying about getting all the rain, explosions, etc. right. Some things that could be in the FX Pack: Rain/Snow (Set via a special version of the Global Switch, and covers the entire level, but can be turned on/off instanly or faded in/out.) Waterfall (You could start by making a box, "water-ifying" it (turning it into a vertical waterfall with no physics) and then you can use the corner editor to mess around with the exact shape.) Smoke (Sort of like when you trigger some dissolve, except continuous, and you can vary the colour, size, speed & direction. Would work sort of like an emitter, but instead of choosing what is emitted, you choose a style, eg. thick, medium, etc.) Fog (I know there is already fog... but I mean like a box that you can place in front of wherever you want it and then turn it into a fog that you can tweak, eg. density.) Lightning (Might be difficult, this one... but I still think it would be cool. Maybe you could set up a line where you drag two "handles" and the lightning jumps from one point to the other. Again, colour, speed, etc. could all be tweakable.) Clouds (I mean real clouds. Not the weird ones that you can climb on... ones that are in the background just for decoration.) Multi-Coloured Lights (Simple, really... just versions of the lights that are already in the game, but with the ability to make one light be different colours. Not sure how it would work, but I'm sure it would be cool.) Fire (Sort of like what we already have, but tweakable so you can change the colour, height, amount of flicker, etc.) Explosions! (No more using emitters to make complex explosions, just attach an "explosion marker" (which could be a similar thing to a emitter, and it marks the center of the explosion) and trigger it via a switch. LOADS of ideas for this, for example, the option to destroy the object the marker is on, the colour, size, speed of explosion, how many times it explodes... so much stuff. This would be awesome.) Render (You activate this, you choose your setting (Snow, Forest, Planet, etc) and your level gets covered in a layer, Of Frost (non slippy) Forest (leaves that move when you walk) Planet (Dust).) - thanks to KernelM! Disappear/Invisify (Allows players to change how objects disappear, or allows the player to make objects invisible. Things disappear using emitters into some weird ether-looking foggy thing - with this idea things would disappear in a pattern. Like, smoke, or by breaking apart rapidly.) - thanks to SLS10! Wind (You could have little wisps or maybe the odd leaf blow past. You could mess with strength and stuff. It would probably eat up the thermometer with all the physics blowing things over though. You could also set objects to be 'blow-overable' which allows them to be affected by wind even if they're glued down.) - thanks to theamilien! I think this would make an excellent pack because the effects it brings would look cool, save on thermo space, and could cut down lag (eg. a premade explosion vs. 10+ lights being emitted). Feel free to contribute and give feedback! - I'll give "Thanks" to anyone who gives an idea! Changelog: Updated to v1.3! Updated to v1.2! hm, well why don't we just have a pack that makes a level for us. What i mean is all those things can already be done but using the creators imagination and creating abilities. | 2009-12-13 03:44:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
hm, well why don't we just have a pack that makes a level for us. What i mean is all those things can already be done but using the creators imagination and creating abilities. Yeah, I know, but the idea is mainly so you can get really good looking effects that save on thermo and don't make the game lag. Plus, let's face it... creators can make water with a good combination of jetpacks and glass, but we still get the water pack. You can make your own music using individual notes, but we still get intMusic... see what I mean? | 2009-12-13 04:01:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
that's the thing, those things will take up thermo and make things lag because they're more realistic and detailed and yea we get music because we cant make that kind of music with the sounds provided, i doubt Mm even expected us to make whole songs with those and water...well you technically cant make water in lbp...just blue glass, that's why we get water | 2009-12-13 04:12:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
I think this is a GREAT idea! In fact this is what I'd like more than water! All I really really want is rain and my levels would be complete! I really hope they make something like this soon.... Because my levels are so overheated I could never fit "homemade" rain in there cuz it takes up too much room | 2009-12-13 04:16:00 Author: DRLONG Posts: 57 |
Still though, littlebigdude805... all these ideas really are quite cool, and the addition of any one of them would bring a fun new element to them game. I like it! | 2009-12-13 04:17:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
well i did like rain and snow because that's actually a must in some levels and since its part of the tweak-able weather it would be very functional. I just dont think a whole DLC could be made around stuff like fog and clouds and lights and stuff that can already be made. | 2009-12-13 04:23:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
You should update the original post with other peoples ideas! my Submishon: Render You activate this, you choose your setting (Snow, Forest, Planet, etc) and your level gets covered in a layer, Of Frost(non slippy) Forest (leaves that move when you walk) Planet(Dust) | 2009-12-13 10:46:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
Updated the original post! Thanks for the kind words! @Littlebigdude805 - I see what you mean, but not everyone is very good at making explosions, waterfalls, etc. (me included) and I think that for creators who are great at making fun levels that lack slightly when it comes to the graphics would really appreciate this. I'm fairly sure this would cut down on lag, because for things such as rain, snow and even explosions, they could all just be 2D alpha-blended sprites that face the camera. I'm sure that drawing a premade explosion on the screen would use less resources than emitting loads of lights. Same goes for rain. You might need 50 separate circles of stickered dissolve to achieve the same effect as one animated sprite being drawn over the entire screen. So... any more ideas? | 2009-12-13 20:39:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
I love this idea, especially "Render" and the precipitation. I think we could go without multi-colored lights, unless it's a disco level... a disco level actually sounds pretty cool. Maybe we do need it. | 2009-12-13 21:25:00 Author: MegaRock35 Posts: 80 |

Maybe we do need it. Lol. I was thinking of it because I made a Xmas tree object, and I wanted the lights to flash different colours but couldn't, so I ended up using emitters that give off 5 different colours for each light. Probably could be done better... but you see what I mean | 2009-12-13 23:30:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
Yeah great ideas alexbull. I've made my own waterfalls, rain ,snow, lightning etc. and they look ok-ish but I agree with you. It would me much better if we had those sorts of thing as tools. For one it would save us lots of time and effort which we could instead use on making the actual level, objects, characters and story. For another it would even more importantly save us lots of thermo which as we all know is the biggest problem with getting in your level everything you want to and we know for a fact that Mm will never increase the thermo size so the only option is to have ready made stuff that takes up as little thermo as possible. | 2009-12-14 00:48:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |

Thanks! The parts of your quote that I bolded are really what I was trying to get at with this idea. | 2009-12-14 01:32:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
Here's another idea for your little gathering of FX things. Disappear/Invisify - allows players to change how objects disappear, or allows the player to make objects invisible. Things disappear using emitters into some weird ether-looking foggy thing - with this idea things would disappear in a pattern. Like, smoke, or by breaking apart rapidly. ...okay, so it's weaker than the other ideas. It'd still be cool! | 2009-12-14 02:00:00 Author: SLS10 Posts: 1129 |
.... Clouds (I mean real clouds. Not the weird ones that you can climb on... ones that are in the background just for decoration.).... Might you mean something alike.. Clouds on a thin layer? They're easy to make, just use the circle tool, flicker around, and then add some smudged-fingerprint-stickers here and there, and it'll look almost like a real cloud.. 3D Rendered clouds cool be cool though, but.. Thermo Heavy. | 2009-12-14 18:47:00 Author: Risumm Posts: 77 |

Ohh how about wind? You could have little wisps or maybe the odd leaf blow past. You could mess with strengh and stuff. It would probably eat up the thermometer with all the physics blowing things over though. You could also set objects to be 'blow ovable' wich allows them to be affected by wind even if theyre glued down. | 2009-12-14 19:48:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |

Thermo Heavy. Well... not exactly rendered in 3D. More like a "picture" in the background that just looks nice. It's hard to explain Or turn the fabric clouds into gas. I've seen them and they look rather nice. Never tried that. I will do now, though! | 2009-12-14 20:08:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
Really love those ideas, sound incredibly helpful but they can also be very bad if they are termo-eaters | 2009-12-15 18:28:00 Author: Racroz Posts: 406 |
Really love those ideas, sound incredibly helpful but they can also be very bad if they are termo-eaters If Mm made this, I bet they could make it thermo-friendly. | 2009-12-15 20:06:00 Author: alexbull_uk Posts: 1287 |
