When you are creating a level do you make a small level of grass and then make dirt (rusted iron material or something of the nature) underneath it or do you make it solid dirt?

It depends. If I'm making a forest or garden-ey type of level I sometimes do. I use dark brown wood though instead of metal.

This is what I do all the time. Create the ground from a one plane thick rectangle. Copy it into the other planes. Corner edit them seperately. Add a darker material on each thin plane, roughly copying the ground behind it.. Yup. I like the results I get from doing this.
