LBPcentral object pack

Archive: 52 posts

Hello fellow LBP-centralists!
Ive seen the logic-pack and I have seen various nicely done objects on the forums.

Ive also seen 100's of crappy levels on lbp itself.
Maybe we could all join in and create theme-based objects-packs for the people out there who dont have the ability or the creativity to create visually stunning levels.

So I was thinking,
We have a logic-pack group..
why not have an "objects-pack" group as well?

We could create packs like:
"Nature", "The city", "Animals and critters", "Industrial" or something like "Christmas" or "Easter"

so.. what does LBP Central think of this idea?

I have a need for new trees. Yet, I wouldn't want to use any pre-made tree, because that would make me a bad creator. Maybe some people would like to use a pre-made tree thought.2009-12-15 14:45:00

Not much people responding..
I do think we could help the not-so creative people to work with better pre-made stuff.

I think this was actually suggested in the past, but nobody got behind the project. It takes a large commitment to formulate something like this, and it's likely to be tough to garner interest from people who can contribute positively to the project.

That said, I wish you the best of luck.

That indeed. Hilightnotes was trying to do something very similar with his "community pallete". Lots of people thought it was a good idea, but i don't think many (if any) tried to contribute.

and @ chamion, i have some free trees in my level "trees" /plug

Well, we could start with something as simple as 5 tree's, 5 bushes/flowers, branches etc.

might start on something in the upcoming few days.

ok, what would be our focuss in a possible first pack?
flora? (plants/tree's)

and, they should not stress the thermo to much..
so preferable not to much materials per object.

Plants/Tree/Nature seem like a safe place to start out. There are loads of materials that could be used for trees, bushes etc as well. But were trying to keep the thermo down so we won't use all those possibilities I'm thinking lol.2009-12-17 18:01:00

What I often did in my enviroment artist days, was use regular tree's for moments where the background/foreground is not so important because for instance gameplay occupied the users concentration, but at moments where the scenery is more important, i would use higher detailed tree's, and maybe one or two eye-catcher tree's.
we could do something like that.

3 high detailed ones, (one animated one?)
5 nice looking ones,
5 normal every day usage tree's.

And then the same for flowers, bushes, vines etc.
Maybe a few more special things, like falling leafs, grabable objects/gameplay related stuff.

this way we would have a decent arsenal of flora to choose from, and we could create a level with the prop's to enhance the "wow look at this forest!, I want to use those for my levels" impact.

Those are some great ideas. I especially like the falling leaves idea. Little touches like that will make people's levels even more better. Just attach some emitters to a stretch of dark matter, I like it.

Anyways I'll get started on some scenery...

I started this thread around the wrong time lol.
X-mas-newyear are taking up some of my time.

Will review 4 or 5 f4f levels today, after that (if my brother doesnt wat to play new super mario brothers the whole day) I'll try to come up with a nice way to do all of this.
(other people's suggestions are also welcome).

Ok,
sorry for the month of interruption..
I kinda went all out With Adi for the co-op contest and have been working on "Sack, The legendary 4" for the past week or so.

I will create a new post about the first pack we will create. (today/tomorrow)
The forest/tree one.

So if you have some nice tree's/branches/bushes/vines/plants/other fauna that you would like to submit,
add me on psn (or ill add you) and show me them/put them in the level on my moon.
You/me will make sure your name is mentioned in the pack.

I might create a small level with the tree's to give the player some inspiration on what to do with the flora as well as the flora itself.

I do need to ask CC if there are any "rules" or "guidelines" when it comes to community object packs.

 Heh... yes. I feel dumb now... heh. That is a REALLY good tutorial that I can't believe how simple it is! I know what I'll make!

Chainsaw-able and logic trees! Mwahahaha! ("Logic Trees" sounds weird. o_O)

Thought of something else.. why not go a step futher with this and add packs to them for lighting ideas, sounds, etc? I remember a level I played that was showing progress through making a simple level look much, much better.. Don't tell me you were part of that too!

I would really like to help though.. in any way I can. I mean, I'm not horrible at making stuff (look at my first level (Test Site) to see my first vehicle on LBP [horrid, jeep with leaves on it and a machine gun on the back], then play my LittleBigBorderlands to see how I improved on making the Buggy! )2010-01-21 16:49:00

Luos, I'm very interested in getting in on this. Visual design is probably one of my favorite aspects of LBP. I had a similar idea a couple of weeks ago but just stumbled on this thread today.

I might suggest that we organize a team of maybe 4-5 dedicated people to do this. One of my concerns with having say 20 people randomly contributing one or two objects is artistic consistency, plus I think logically we need to carefully plan what sorts of object collections would be most useful to people.

Structuring the project like the Logic Pack (i.e. encapsulated in playable levels) would serve as a substantial contribution to the LBP community wrapped up in a fun and professional way to get these objects to the masses. But I think considerable planning should be done ahead of time to do this in an efficient manner. If done as a showcase LBPC project like the Logic Pack, it needs to be more than a bunch of prize bubbles strewn across a level. Perhaps done in a themed style similar to the History Pack?

If you're interested in pursuing the project in this way, maybe the first step is to organize a formal creation team. I'd be more than happy to add you as a friend and perhaps we can get together and exchange ideas. I've enjoyed your design series with TheAdipose and I think we're on the same page when it comes to prettying up LBP.

Hello Gide,
Nice to know more people want to help the community to use new pre-created objects.

About the level, I was thinking about a botany garden of some sort (logicpack style) but obviously I have not decided anything yet.
This would basically be somewhat the same as the history pack.
As for who created the visual style from the logicpack.. I am kind of ashamed to tell that I do not know.
(will do a search after posting this).

I wouldnt mind to try and get a formal creation team, but any contributions from others should not be disregarded without taking a propper look at the object on question.
Everyone should be able to get a shot, and if their objects fit in with one of the themes we should obviously add em.

Our first step should probably be to setup a group, lets discuss a little more on ps3/lbpc private.

Well if you would like ideas I am great a thinking about how things can be done differently. This sometimes if a bit hard for me as I have a few levels full of random projects and items I make.. heh. When I get on tonight (I will when I get home at 5:00 Central) I can share ideas with you if you're on. I could possibly help more in the level design aspect of it.2010-01-21 18:34:00

Not so much the visual style of the logic pack - this was very techy/sterile which worked for its industrial look. I was getting more at the fact that the objects were showcased by entertaining levels with story and environmental design (rather than just a series of objects pasted into a blank level). Like the history pack, only maybe with some story to it.

Agreed. It's my understanding we could also create a private group here on the forums to discuss?

I think this pack could be a good contrast to the Logic Pack (in level design I mean). Where the logic pack was about mechanical things and how things worked it was like a high tech factory where this being more about visual and adding a feel to it it could have a farm-like feel (still having some of that high tech feel) with greenhouses and having dirt on stuff (that one dirt sticker on stuff). Ooh, you could make it funny and have a comedic farmer that works for Logi-tech. Have him in overalls and a straw hat to further add to the contrast between the clean sterile environment of the Logic Pack and the open, natural Plant Pack. If you do a "normal" item retrieval thing you could have "seed packets" that the player grabs to get the score bubble, or if you do it like the Logic Pack (and have copyable levels) then you could have seed packets (Trees, Bushes, Flowers, etc.) as the level icons or just as decorations.

Aaah, well.. I'm just throwing ideas in for you guys to think about.

Hah.. thought of a beginning: You start in the Logi-tech facility [doing something logic-y] then you're told to make a delivery to the Plant Facility. So, you go out to the truck and find out the delivery is fertilizer... the natural kind; but, you still drive the truck to the farm [maybe have this as a non-player controlled vehicle [once they hop inside] to be the intro to the level with signs and things of that sort. Then, as you drive further things begin to look different, there are farms, lots of trees, etc. Then you get to a facility that looks a lot like the logi-tech place, but much dirtier and "wild" [not as "clean cut'?]. Maybe vines growing up the walls, potted plants on many surfaces, greenhouses full of plants, things of that sort. I think it would be a good intro, but that is just the basic idea coming from me. You guys could scrap it, enhance it, or make something on your own from it.

Edit for earlier post: Realized that "Creating an Atmosphere" level was part of the Logic Pack [Advanced]. Heh, it would be cool to expand on that for people, but that is another project altogether.
