Hey guys! We're going to run a little test to see how server-intensive the Live Threads feature is by disabling it for about 24 hours. We suspect that's the source of all of the server queries, but we can't be sure until we try, so forum threads will not update automatically for the time being. Just giving you guys a bit of a heads-up so you're aware of the situation.

Ouch, well that could explain it if it was that. Oh boy, now I feel bad when I just let my tabs sit there while i surf the web on another tab so they live update when a new post happens, I did that quite a bunch of times over the past few days with the recent water announcments

What's the live threads feature? Never heard it before... It's when a thread is updated with a new post if someone posts while you're in that thread, so that you won't have to refresh the page to see if there are new posts, you see it automatically. Anyway, I see why you did I guess... /runs

Alright, small update: we're extending the period that Live Threads will be down so we can do some more rigorous testing regarding server load. The weekends are especially heavy traffic times (for obvious reasons), so we're going to see if there's a significant difference in server load during that period of time when compared to previous weekends.

Ironically I couldn't access this site for the last few hours because of heavy traffic according to the error message. This is a different issue, unrelated to the reason we removed Live Threads. If the removal of Live Threads had not been effective, we would have probably seen another database error instead. I'm still unsure what caused the downtime, and we cannot find out for sure until Monday since the host isn't actually working today. It could have been heavy traffic, but that doesn't make much sense since the site went down around midnight here (Pacific Standard Time). That's not exactly our busiest time of the day. I'm thinking there's something else at play here that I just haven't been able to nail down yet. I guess all we can do now is be thankful that the site's not going down at peak times anymore.

We have made a fundamental change to the way the site sends MySQL requests, which (in theory) should lighten the load. Keep using the site as normal and let us know if you run into any issues. As a side effect, we have re-enabled Live Threads. Enjoy.
