Why Do We Create In The First Place?

Archive: 20 posts

I was thinking to myself one day, why do I create levels?and why do others do it also? I, myself, mainly do it for the fun and joy of creating something that is unique. Its just darn cool when you know that people can admire what you have done, and it shows how much creative brain activity we can put in game form. Some people do it for the hearts or the :star:'s, but in the end, a levels only meaning is to give the players a awesome experience that leaves them wanting more. I would like anyone who reads this to post what drives them to create levels and what they get out of it personally themselves, and for those who don't create.. get to creating! Because it is a fun and rewarding experience!2009-12-10 20:19:00

This is a periodic thread we get every 2 weeks. Did you search the forum or did read 3-5 pages deep of thread titles?

Anyhow, we create for the same reason we play. I mean, why to we play games? This bring nothing outside entertainment and expressing something. By creating you express yourself in a way that shall be entertaining.

Haha, h4h is the worst, im not so lucky to get those but it frustrates me that people will just do that for the trophy, why waste the time commenting for hearts? people could spend that time making awesome levels that deserve hearts!

I create in LBP because I found it really expensive to create all this stuff in real life. Just the cost of rockets alone makes it pretty cost effective!!2009-12-11 16:02:00

I create because I enjoy the retro VCR sounds. With the advent of DVDs you simply don't get the pleasure of hearing a tape mechanically rewind anymore.2009-12-11 16:06:00

LOL do I understand a word that normally starts with an "H" and doesn't have "er" in the middle?

I also think everyone looks for recognition as well. Not necessarily to be the most popular creator ever, but to be at least acknowledged for anything they've put some effort into.2009-12-11 18:36:00

I create for various reasons.

All of my life I wanted to get into creating games,
So much actually that I was always drawing down games and had my own idea's on how to do them.

This went as far that it even influenced my choice for education.
Eventually I ended up on the "grafical lyceum" in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
(direction: animation and games)
Around that time I got addicted to unreal tournament.. not the shooting/gaming part but the level-designing aspect of it.

It took me a while to get into, but eventually I was making levels that could be ranked mong the best that where out there.
As the years passed by, unreal tournament 2003/2004 came around and I started using 3dsmax more and more.
I finished a few levels and they where all recieved very nicely.

In the 3th year of my education I had to follow an internship and I did that @ Khaeon/Spellborn inc. in The Hague, The Netherlands.
I learned a lot, and at that time was working on three different levels for ut2004.
I put my soul into those levels, the gameplay was superb.. the visuals.. I was amazed that I could achive such detail.. I lost so much sleep over them thinking about how I could do even better...

6 months into the internship all of a sudden my right wrist started to ache non-stop and after visiting a few doctors they guessed it was RSI (repetative straining injury).
I could not use the mouse anymore and now had to navigate with my left hand.
Not that big of a problem since I am a lefty from birth.
I got physical therapy for my wrists and arms to keep them in shape, one of spicific part involved stretching my arm 2 inches longer than normal to loosen up the muscles..

Because of my arms my internship-talk-to-watching-my-behind guy slowely started to get anoyed by me because I couldnt work up to speed and fell behind more and more.
Also, my left wrist and arm started to ache as well.
Things got worse.
I couldnt make the hours, the boss/people around me started to look down on me even though nobody had the guts to tell what was wrong about the game we where working on, and I had those guts....
after that they made a huge step forward..
Nontheless they decided that I no longer had to work there because I became a liability.

I could no longer use a pc..
Sometimes waking up.. without any feeling in my arms.. took up to 15 minutes going trough a torturous feeling of pins, needles and knives before the pain floated away.
and I still had half a year of college to finish.. the ending project.. 4 months+ intensive working in 3dsmax with two classmates and do the best we can..
Even though I worked hour after hour on the project and was working on it almost every day.. almost none of my work was used for various reasons.. my arms being one of them.. nothing was really finished.

I had to give up working on my ut2004 levels, and even the ut3 level I started working on.. is now nothing more but a vague memory.

I was defeated..
So much job-offerings in my inbox..
I could work in Canada, America, australia, Europe..
No more level designing.. no more enviroment artist.. and no chance to ever get my idea's out there.. never the chance to see one of my own thought of games on the shelves.

I had to get my mind of off it..
So started a photography college in Rotterdam, The Netherlands..
But after a few months I realised I just couldnt do it..
Dont get me wrong.. I am a decent photographer..
but my arms.. and me.. where not up for it.
So much sitting behind pc's.. I couldnt handle it.
One day I woke up and my strength in the right arm was just gone.

I went to the doctor, from there to the hospital..
first they thought it was "Thorassic outlet syndrome" (having an extra rib that makes your bloodflow stop from shoulders down).
But after many tests this wasnt the case.
After that they did x-rays and god knows what to see whats up.

Eventually I had an appointment with one of the doctors.. and she told me that I should just accept the fact that my arms where hurting and they couldnt find what was wrong with them.

That was almost two years ago.
Last year (2007) I hadnt touched a pc for more than a few hours..
Now.. Ive had my share of hardship but having to give up your dream is just to much.

So when LBP came along I was attracted to the editor-part of the game more than any other aspect... since using the ps controller almost doesnt stress my arms I could finally do what I loved most.
Creating for games, working out idea's.. editing.. enviromental design..

I dont give a .... about hearts or stars.. I just want to build my levels and hopefully attract a big crowd.. just to hear that people are enjoying my work.

So when 1.07 came out, and deleted all the hard work ive put into my levels..
It smacked me in the face harder than it should have been.. but can one blaim me when I finally was able to design again.. and see everything being taken away from me... again..

MM had a enviroment artist job-offering so I submitted my CV..
They might have been the only company that had a job-offering I could actually fullfill..
But I wasnt the furtunate one.. that might also have influenced my reactions back then.

I just got back to lbpcentral a few weeks ago, editing again.. its in my blood.. I cant sleep at night because my mind creates.. I dream about designing.. about editing.. about art..

I am behind the pc more than I should.. but since I cannot even find a decent job because of my arms.. what else can I do?

Its almost 2010.. My life has been standing still for almost three years..
Im almost 27 years old..
I need to get a job.. but cant find any.. may it be in games, may it be in photography... may it be something else..
My ......... arms..

And editing in lbp.. is the only way I can still do something with my hobby that doesnt hurt me like the pc hurts me now.

I do have speechrecognition for my pc, but havent used it a lot lately.
I shouldve used it for this long story..
believe me.. I will feel it tomorrow..

tl:dr - Its in my blood.

Creating is a much needed thing in games, personally i think the people who play the game can come up with better ideas than the creators of the games, so LBP's create mode gives you the ability to share theese ideas with the world.2009-12-15 16:25:00
