PSP vs. PS3: which platform fits which levels?

Archive: 16 posts

I have this list of level concepts that I want to build on the PS3 version. Now I have the PSP version as well, I checked it to see if I could use any of the concepts for a PSP level. Which got me thinking: what are the differences between the platforms, and which levels would work best on which platform? Ignoring the current create bugs on the PSP, this is what I came up with so far:

PS3 is better for visual levels, because it sports lighting, more layers, prettier special effects, etc..
There's no paintgun (yet) on the PSP, so war-themed levels are pulled towards the PS3.
PSP does not support multiplayer levels. Conversely, you don't have to worry about making a singleplayer level work for multiple players on the PSP.
PSP can be suspended, which is an advantage for really long levels.
There's a difference in materials, decorations and such, which makes some levels easier to build on one platform than the other.

What did I miss? What are your considerations for choosing a platform? Is it a consideration at all?

Seeing as I can barely get on my PS3, it's more of a 'How can I do this level on PSP' rather than 'this would be better on PS3'. Funnily enough my next level on PSP contains war aspects, but ofcourse I'm giving it a big lbp PSP twist to make it more fun 2009-12-09 16:19:00

I think normally PS3 levels are much longer and more visual, like the story levels. The PSP levels would be short and sweet, because of the 2-layer system and the fact that you can't really play a 25-minute level filled with backtracking and witchcraft on the go, but you can just turn it on, hop on a small adventure and be done as you reach your bus stop.2009-12-09 17:47:00

There's some other slight changes as well, you can't swing things as fast or hard on the PSP version when you are on a jetpack, you can sticker while grabbing or in a speech bubble view on the PSP, Bombs don't blow up anything on the PSP version (you'll have to make them look like things blew up with dissolve or a creature brain)2009-12-09 17:53:00

While that kinda sucks since I make things look blowed up by... blowing them up, it does help lessen the unwanted destruction, like when the impact explosive you're supposed to put on a cart explodes and renders the whole mini-game screwed (I'm looking at you, Boom Town.)

same here I like thinking of how to get around the limitations of psp and getting as close to the ps3 lol.

But you can suspend your PSP in seconds, and continue playing where you left off in the bus or after you arrive at your destination. That to me seems to be the biggest advantage the PSP has over the PS3, no?

Thanks for the bomb info, didn't know that. So do you think the slight differences in control (sackboy has been said to jump higher, and less floaty, too) make the PSP better or worse for straight platforming?

Sorry for the double post, but here's the conclusion I reached: PSP is ideal for puzzle levels. Puzzles are more fun to figure out yourself, and PSP has no multiplayer (also less worries when designing for one player). And because you can suspend the PSP, if you get stuck on a difficult one, you can suspend and come back to it with a fresh mind.

My first project will be an adaption of an old Konami puzzle game. Just hope the logic holds.

That's not LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation Portable. It looks to be a picture of the footage Media Molecule showed off at Game Developers Conference back in 2007 before the game was released; it's definitely photoshopped.

I agree with Rogar, LBP fits best with puzzles, and the logic works like the LBP/PS3 version.
The PS3-version is best for visuals, as you have more options, but I think the stickers in the PSP-version are a lot more varied than the PS3-version.

I guess it's still useful to let a friend do some testing before you publish. Not that I know anyone else with LBP PSP.

But... Hey, you've gone all off-topicky in my little thread!
