Airships!

Archive: 34 posts

Check out a level called Dirigible: D1 for an airship I've been working on. This thread will be updated as the published demonstration level is updated.

Sacky standing on top for scale. It's pretty big!

An anti-aircraft gun to defend yourself from scurrilous syndicates of sky pirates and other undesirables.

Part of your luxurious cabin.

Stuff I hope to add in the future:

An anchor.
Some kind of landing gear.
A retractable set of stairs for boarding.
Wine rack, bath, world globe and other OTT furnishings.
If you have any ideas for other things to add let me know!

Whoa, that looks amazing! Does it actually fly?

I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished.

When I read the title, I instantly thought of the Airships from Super Mario Bros. 3. This looks so much more impressive! I'mma see these up close 'n' personal later. 2009-12-08 19:14:00

I gotta admit, when I played this I was filled with a bit of jealousy because of the Ball Turret. I've got a working Ball Turret but I can't get a plane that looks good with it so I felt a wave of defeat wash over when I saw the Ball Turret on your Dirigible. Yet I couldn't access it, is it just for show?

Jealousy aside, That was very amazing and I loved that it actually worked so well without sacrificing the looks like some of the other airships on LBP. The Dirigible's thrust seems to affect it's pitch more then it's horizontal movement. I didn't give a prolonged grab though, so it might straighten out after ten or so seconds and I just wasn't comfortable holding that long.

Still awesome, :star::star::star::star::star: & hearted.

Thanks! Yep, it flies.

Hmmm, I had in mind the sorts of turrets you see on Lancaster bombers. Maybe it would look good on some kind of WWII plane?

At the moment it's just for show, yes. Not sure how I'm going to get it to work yet.

You're right, it's a pain having to hold a grab switch for ages. Will have to think of something to address that issue.

This... is... EPIC! That's amazing. I'm so jealous! I've tried to make blimps before. They all sucked. That must've taken AGES.2009-12-09 17:46:00

Cool!

...You NEED to recreate the sonic level with those flying ship thingies (if my memory serves me correctly).

Correct me if I'm wrong; is the balloon made out of floaty, then the hull gives enough weight to keep it steady and there are rockets at the back to propel it?2009-12-10 21:22:00

The only Sonic levels that come to mind are the Flying Battery (which was amazing, I think it was in Sonic and Knuckles or Sonic 3) along with one of the last levels in Sonic 2 which was set on an airship.

I'm not sure that's what you're getting at but I can't remember much more.

Yep, pretty much. There's nothing advanced going on.

I've republished the level (now called Dirigible Airship: D1A) with an updated version of the floaty crusier.

The AA gun now works and how the ship is controlled has been changed. You no longer need to hold down R1 which 4wheel suggested. The airship doesn't pitch as much as it did which was another thing brought up in this thread. There's a thrust angle instrument on the bridge so you don't need to keep going down a deck to see which way your engines are pointing, along with a bunch of other things.

Enjoy!

Really fun to play with this zeppelin. The level of detail is amazing, I just wish there were some biplanes or something to shoot down with the AA gun lol. 2009-12-13 19:26:00

i had an idea for how to make the ball turret work, i made one like this a while ago before i discovered the magic of logic. what i had was a working turret 1 thick plane and 2 thin planes thick. the front thick plane was stationary and looked like this:2009-12-13 20:20:00

Great update, it was a little hard to get it off the ground at first. Once I got it airborne though it handled much better than the earlier model. One thing I noticed though, the ascend switch seemed to make the airship nose into the ground when used alone. I had to reverse the thrusters' angle while using the ascend switch to gain height without losing balance. So you're gonna have to mess around with the rockets connected to the ascend switch.

On a side note: The AA is fun. lol

I've played your Halloween level which was amazing! (Left you a comment of that nature.) Your level of detail is staggering! Also think it was your Hoverboards I've been messing with... Keep up the great work!2009-12-14 16:22:00

So you made this? Its one of my favorite creations! I hearted it as soon as I played it. Its what inspired me to make my latest creation, a yacht.

Oh. A question. I flew around in your airship for practically 30 minutes ( and an enjoyable 30 minutes it was! ) but I never found a leaderboard. Where is it hidden? I'm just a bit curious. Sorry if you already answered this, I just read the first post.

Awesome airship Ayneh and the little details inside are brilliant.

The gun is great too but I did want to shoot at something with it if only a few targets.

I did find a few litle problems with the level though :

The lift up to it would be much better if it wasn't set to require all as it's almost impossible for more than 1 player to jump to the airship at the same time. Would be easier to go up one at a time.

It sometimes takes off on it's own before you've all got in ( this again would be helped by altering that lift )

The instructions at the bottom are difficult to interpret because the numbers are very faint and the wrong way round. Also it would be better to move this board away from the airship because it's difficult to get it ascending to start with and sometimes it gets caught on that board and breaks something. I was trying for ages to move it unsuccesfully until I realised it was caught on that.

When it does eventually move it is very slow. Could it be speeded up a touch?

Sorry for the long list. They're all minor points but things which take away from the great airship.

First time I played it it helped alot (only because we had 4 players and the blast killed two of them ).

It's very good though, I love it. One question though, are there actually things to shoot?

Sorry, no, there's no scoreboard.

That makes sense, I'll change the elevator tomorrow.

Were you playing with another person? I got a bunch of messages where people were having trouble getting off the ground when there was more than 1 player. You would've thought having an airship so big would cancel out the small difference in weight between 1 player and 2 but apparently not!

I'll try making the numbers stand out more, thanks for the heads up!

The best way to pick up speed quickly is to leave the green light on, angle the thrusters down to gain some altitude and then point them as far as they will go to the left and just leave them there. Give it a bit and you'll be whizzing along.

One question though, are there actually things to shoot?
That would be cool, I don't know how to go about doing it though. Maybe you'd make a decent plane and have them spawn in front of the airship or something?

oh, i forgot to put this up a long time ago. i love the airship except for the turret, i have made one that would work great or you could build your own of the same nature. you see your turret looks good but doesn't handle very well. so i built one thats super easy to use, i hope you consider using it. now it is kind of hard to explain how it works without using it so you could add me and i can send it to you. don't feel obligated though, after all i did put it in a level call "airship turret" . any way here is a pic:
