Should I use the 3D glitch in my next level?

Archive: 9 posts

I'm thinking of making a level series involving many loctions, and since a single level may contain a city area and a jungle area, is it worth using the 3D glitch at any point?

(Also: How do you actually make your own '3D' pieces of material, as opposed to gathering them from the many many levels that give them out?)

If you can, then yes, by all means do so. Just make it look nice.

And what do you mean by collecting as many 3D materials as you can? You only need two objects, one for the front 11 layers and the other for the background ones...You can use any material if you have these two objects, just select one of them, don't place, go back without exiting your popit and choose a material to start drawing with.

Or are you talking about something completely different? 0__0

Use it if you want you, and if it fits the style of your level. Not because its cool or other people want you to. It can make a level look better, but it needs to be used right, and at times is a bit of a pain.2009-12-07 21:28:00

I'd say if the level requires the glitch by all means use it. Basically if what your planning would look better using the deeper layers - go for it.

To make your own extra layers you need a copy of the original glitch material and you can emit them to make single layers forward or backwards but it's sort of a pain and unless you need something in a very specific layer it's faster to use the collected versions from other levels.

If you do decide to use it I strongly suggest checking out Teebonsey's tutorial about the glitch. It's very complete and will save you tons of headaches if you read it before messing around with stuff. I'll put a link in for it in just a second.

EDIT: Here ya go

Comphermc has a level with a the 3d layers already in it. It helped me out a lot, you should look at it. (It's copyable.)2009-12-07 21:56:00

When done well, the background glitch can create some outstanding visuals, but as others have said it's pretty tricky to use. If you feel like it will help you realize your vision, then by all means, use it. Personally, I haven't used it yet and I'm not sure I ever will because of how finicky it is.2009-12-08 00:06:00

Sure, background buildings and trees could add some depth (though the Metropolis background works, too. But be careful it's not at the expense of gameplay. Personally, I'm not a fan of those pretty 3D levels where you just walk around.2009-12-08 09:55:00

I agree. Also the only level I've played that 3d really improved was callled...vertigo2?...or something like that...

It definately can be useful - there's NO way I would have been able to do Splat Invaders III without it. The mechanics to make the aliens fly around required all the normal layers, but I wanted to put it in the setting of Washington DC. I couldn't figure out how to do it well until the 3D glitch came along.

As mentioned above, CompherMC has a GREAT copyable level with quite a bit of the leg work already done. But play around with it in a test level - there are quite a few rules that need to be followed so things don't break apart.

Also, NinjaMicWZ has a great little article in tutorials about how to create your objects completely in the normal layers, then shift them into the background layers using glitches material once you are finished. For complex drawing or using collected objects other than materials, this is a bit tricky but works well.
