SackHiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Archive: 31 posts

Here's a question... I've looked all over for a ps3 hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy themed level but have yet to find one... I'm curious if anyone HAS found one I'd love to see it but for now I'll be working on my PSP one.

I have and idea to take the movie and make it as memorable as possible but there's one problem... How could I make my sackboy... "teleport"?

I've seen dozens of them. I would list them off but I'm not on right now.2009-12-07 05:09:00

Use the search text for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
The teleporter is easy enough thanks to Leerdammer.
Have a player sensor connected to the checkpoint you want to teleport to. Have a way to kill your sackboy, aka emit gas. Hook the player sensor to the emitter. Now when you walk in range of the sensor, the gas should kill you and then you appear in the newly activated checkpoint.

If you pull this off I'm so playing it! I love that whole story and have been dying to make one but haven't had a chance to. 2009-12-07 06:20:00

The only thing I don't like about the idea is that I didn't think of it. Doh! Awesome movie, even better book. Might be the best book ever, actually. I can't wait to play it.

As for the teleporter, all you need is a moving checkpoint and some kind of death. Use a magnetic speed switch setup attached to some sounds to add a bit of a "revving up" feel and it should be fairly convincing. Because there are no lighting effects to rely on, you'll have to get creative with covering up the death animation. Maybe you could have sackboy enter a chamber with a closing door or something.

Not talking about the PS3 incarnation of the game... thanks for the ideas tho, I wonder if it is possible to attach a sensor switch to a checkpoint... the ideas are endless now... Time to begin working!

You'd be the one to know Taffey, your level was my inspiration, I couldn't help it I was laughing so incredibly hard during the rocket scene cause it was in fact epic...

You have a great take on perspective and I would love inputs and ideas (Loved the movie so hard and the book I never read but I am well going to pick it up... something about Stephen Fry makes it all worthwhile...)

I had fun making that scene... Mostly I was glad that I was able to find the perfect music for it. It's even called "Taking Off".

As for Hitchhiker's Guide, the book really is the perfect "bowl of popcorn" type of reading. Deep sci fi without being nerdy, razor sharp wit, and just hilarious! It really is written superbly. If you sort of liked the movie (which was great), you will totally love the book. The movie will make more sense as well after you read it.

If you have the means I highly recommend the BBC Radio Drama version as well. Very excellent! We have a social group for fans too - check it out.2009-12-07 08:00:00

will do! I work early today and here's hoping I can get off without a hitch.. my local gamestop got assassin's creed bloodlines and I've been looking to test it out... hoping that doesn't distract my ADHD brain into stealing my hours away..

Oh well time to get work!

Starting work on my level now, RL money work is over with for at least 2 days and I've got time to watch this dvd to no end... craptacular tho I need to find me a universal remote so I can actually use the bonus features which I plan on adding in!

Question tho... would you like to see this broken into parts or one long story chain? because no matter what I do have an incredibly awesome idea for the "world creation" scene, it'll take perspective and genius but hey... who ever said this was going to be difficult!

I lurve that book. I've been making some stuff from the movie ever since I learned this. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=15524)I was thinking of mxixing the guide speech with the tutorial speech to make a sort of Hitchhikers Guide to Littlebig Planet. But it was a bit too hard to get good audio.

Can't wait for a level on this from LBP Central. Near all of the made here are awesome

I think you will get the best out of this in multiple parts. Thermometer wise, this is space age and is likely to take up a lot of space and cutting corners because of limitations would not do it justice.

That elevator Slartibartfast uses would be tricky...

thanks for the input! I've got the intro, first/second parts thought up already and sketching as I go along... this level will make or break my LBP career if it fails, heh... Here's hopin! also... I wish I could do the intro song justice... if only LBP had importing music..2009-12-08 06:01:00

Could you do those funny cutout puppet style scenes from the movie? You know the part where man proves there isn't a god or the Infinite Improbablility Generator part? Those would be perfect for LBP style puppet theater!2009-12-08 06:30:00

Actually working on one right now, the translator leech... I hope to get the doors of the spaceship sighing too.. I've got several ideas in the works, let's hope the logic holds.... Please oh please sony creators, watch over my level! It's a lot of work...

If any of you creators wish to get a hold of me I have aim: Machinoxen

I would love some more ideas in real time

Babel Fish if you still can't remember the name =P

Are you only doing the movie parts or will you include something like the G'Gugvuntts and Vl'hurgs battle meeting where Arthur says "I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle".

I wish there were some Doctor Who references in the movie since DA did work on some and is referenced a lot in DW.

not certain yet, I've yet to read the book, this is just a movie version but I hope to add more in other instances... i was actually thinking of starting out with the slaughty bumfarst (sp?) scene first since that's not as complex but still quite fun!

I had to scrap the intro for now, it was really shaping up nice but the bolts were slipping, the material was shifting, HORRIBLY and parts randomly went dynamic breaking the entire intro... so I'll start off with a simple portion and move on from there.... seriously tho the logic it's self was sound and easy to accomplish but unfortunately the editor destroyed it in an instant...

See... there's one problem I've started work and no logic no matter how small is working on this level... I had the intro down with the dolphins jumping to the moon (made it a puzzle) yet no matter what I used, winch (that was more stable) or pistons it made the entire level move no matter what. The portion of the level I had moving the dolphins kept separating (IN GAME!) so unfortunately I've stopped the intro and started work on one scene that I know will work... my favorite part in the movie, the factory floor! I've found a neat way to make stars sparkle and am trying to implement that into the level now, tho it's a huuuuge level length wise so I'm trying to add in certain puzzles and such to make it more user fun instead of just a tutorial showcase, hmmm do cow's count as "Fun puzzles" ?2009-12-09 21:48:00

Maybe instead of cows.....ravenous bug blatter beasts of trall =P But yeah..I read about a babel fish puzzle that was very hard but I don't know what it was.

Actually on the topic of the movie. Isn't it silly that the guide didn't mention how mind bogglingly stupid that animal is?
If you can't see it, he thinks he can't see you XD

I wish I knew how to create music in LBP so I could make journey of the sorcerer.
Is it posilble to see a picture of a small bit?

[sorry if I can't delete the prior post, some buttons are broke]

I love that bit of music too.

About the moving logic - I think Gilgamesh had a thread about the whole moving logic thing and how to deal with it a bit. It doesn't solve the problem so much as show you a way to manually adjust the shapes of the logic so they don't shift... If I understood it correctly.

I used that guide in the creation and it still destroyed the puzzle... I even went so far as to make everything glass and round so there was no traction yet it still broke... I'm going to work on this slowly without logic (but make notes) so when the logic is fixed I'll be able to pop the logic in and finish up easy enough!

I'm going to be picking up all the novels for the making of this but I will try to stay mostly faithful to the movie as that's what captivated me most!

After working 4 days straight on this level and being roughly 70% complete the level exploded, everything broke, parts disappeared and everything didn't even work CLOSE to what I designed of it... I'm done... 4 days worth of work ruined, even the backups were ruined... I'm done for a while..

Thank you Sony.. you proved to me that in it's current incarnation Sony Entertainment is just as retarded as TV wrestling (sorry WW whatever fans but my point stands..)

We doubted you but you pulled through for us Sony. Well done. Sounds like you put a lot of good work into this, hope something gets noticed if it doesn't get destroyed as well.

I have only seen the film but...
Are you adding a race through the desert of those fly-swatter things that hit you when you think?
They could simply be traps under the sand set for only one use each.

Oh no Sackrates...I feel for you . This is disappointing...I was looking forward to playing it...will you try again once a patch obliterates these debilitating glitches?

I hope too... I am incredibly angry at Sony, I canceled my order to purchase a PS3 and LBP game of the year edition, when they asked what the reason was I said, "The dedication of Sony to the all mighty dollar instead of the customer"

I refuse to buy anything Sony until they fix their problems instead of pushing that excuse for a paperweight called the PSPGo...

IF they fix this problem so it doesn't cause my level to explode, I didn't save it but every time I start it up it explodes all the logic, I'll let it sit for awhile and come back to it..

I'm making a simple one that I was given an idea by the net, but a bid to make it better... Super Sackbros Adventure! I've already got an idea on how it will work and the logic is easy and sound so here's hoping, I'll keep coming back to it and my other levels
