Taking In-game Videos

Archive: 18 posts

So here's my idea: wouldn't be cool if in LittleBigPlanet you could take videos? It could work similar to the Picture feature. Just take a the frame, adjust the size, maybe change things like Player tracking, length, add in a voice over via USB headset, etc. Then there could be an item like in First Steps, where it would be a screen similar to the scoreboard, where it could play any videos you have saved when a player presses a button. And you could export these videos like you do pictures to share online. What do you think?2009-12-06 14:38:00

well when you think about it that way imagine before LBP was thought of infact before any console was invented and someone tells you about an idea they had (LBP) imagine what you would think but it's been done hasn't it?

Great idea by the way it could be useful for making tutorials e.g costume tutorials

I think they should first start by allowing higher-quality in-game photos. If they can't handle higher quality pictures, then how could they handle video!

As compher suggests, I would be surprised if they can find the processing resources for video capture in game. I would point out that whilst HD video recorders are simply too expensive for me to justify the cost, I've been looking into getting a basic SD recorder and it seems you can get them for around ?20-30 if you look around.2009-12-06 18:57:00

I think one issue with this is that local playback would be fine, exporting video from game would be fine, but load times on levels would become longer and level file sizes would be come larger.

the potential for this is in the game already as the creator tutorials do exactly what the original poster said.

I thought Youtube export was coming soon???

Something like the video recorder in RDKF: FOP would be perfect 2009-12-06 20:27:00

Several other PS3 games have excellent YouTube integration - PAIN being the best example, since it has an editor in it as well. I would love to see this added to LBP - I can't think of any game more in need of it.2009-12-07 09:02:00

Y'know, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this was a good idea.
I think it would be very useful, and possibilities could be endless, depending on the user's creativity. Though, after thinking about it, they should probably work up to this. Like compher says, higher quality photos would be a good place to start. And, of course, there is the load time issue. But if Media Molecule actually continues to build upon LittleBigPlanet as they intend to, the technology/software being used for the game can improve, and load time won't even be an issue.

There's a video feature in Noby Noby Boy. You can choose between different video resolutions and the video is recorded straight onto your hard drive.

I tried using a video capture card called EasyCap and a piece of software called VirtualDub with no joy.

LittleBigPlanet taxes the system enough as it is without any post-processing. Recording and encoding video while playing the game would have a very negative impact on performance. If MM is going to develop this tool some day, what needs to be done is to record the player actions, physics information, AI information, and other data during gameplay, then have the recorder play the data back and recreate the scene exactly for recording it to a video. This way there will be no lag either during gameplay or the video itself. This brilliant system is used in several modern PC games, I believe, and would work wonders with LittleBigPlanet. The main problem is, though, recreating the events exactly, which means very strict control of the game environment.

Edit: ARD, how does the recorder in RDKF work?

ARD, how does the recorder in RDKF work?

Basically, you just hit start and there is a 'record' option in the menu to start recording. When you're done you press start again and you get the option to export to the XMB video folder or upload straight to youtube.

I didn't understand that very well, but you seem to know what you're talking about.

yeah that would be cool, i thought we could, but i dont have a ps3 yet so...... we need that to be added! the censored word list makes it hard to get some words into the magic mouth thing. the videos could be a video streaming of instructions... not bad..not bad at all!2009-12-19 01:39:00

Super Smash Bros. Brawl uses the rcording system mentioned by Crashdance. Basically, it records every single button pressed and event that occurs in the match, and then plays it back exactly. It's pretty much emulating itself. It's a big list of events that are "played" out when you want to watch the replay. There is no recorded video at all.2009-12-19 01:52:00

Perhaps on the level info screen there could be another tab where a recorded video can be played before entering the level. So you can get an idea on what the level is like.

Also, about the video increasing the level's file size: couldn't the video simply be streamed while playing?

You know, that might work (I'm no expert), but perhaps there could also be a maximum limit of video length throughout the level. If they keep them fairly short, the loading time might not be too much longer. Besides, the short video in First Steps didn't seem to affect load time at all.2009-12-20 21:10:00
