This is a level I've been working on sporadically for a long time and just now completed it. I tried to incorporate as many different obstacles as possible but my lights/decorations/stickers, and complex shapes maxed out the thermo. In fact, it's my first attempt at creating a proper "story" level and I learned a lot throughout its evolution. Anyway, I hope some of you will find time to go play it.

My sincerest thanks to PCAwsome for those long sleepless nights he helped me in making and testing things out and learning new ways to create things. And to deboerdave, whom I wouldn't have made this level in the first place and ultimately became my inspiration for it.

Hi Shenoa, just played your level...

A gorgeous looking level, and very deceptive - beauty can kill! And it did!

Very good visuals which I thought raised this level into the 'Very Good' category, and my-oh-my, some sections were tough for me, but never frustrating. It was my fault I died, not yours.

I was determined to get to the end, and I did so with much satisfaction. Very well done, and thank you.

Rated 5*, hearted, and tagged with "What-the-heck-are-you-trying-to-do-to-me?"

My first thoughts upon entering the level- Wow! The shiny, metallic style is really unique and cool looking. The flower bearing trees compliment the silver platforms nicely. The platforming sections have a nice difficulty, perhaps just a tad too difficult for maximum enjoyment. Great for people who enjoy a challenge, though. The story gives some incentive to keep going, and retry if you end up failing. Nice lava effects, too. The final boss was interesting, and different. It was easy to take advantage of it and just drop swords on it, though. Overall, a great level, especially for those who like a challenging level that isn't just blatantly.. challenging. This one has a story, too.2009-12-06 00:19:00

Hey Shenoa77!

Played your level twice now, and I must say I love the look of it! You're really good with this dark fantasy art style. The level itself is pretty hard, which will scare most people away (not me, mind you!)... the fact that only 4 out of 377 (I think) play-throughs actually ended up on the scoreboard speaks for itself, really. But if your goal was to make a tough platformer, you've more than met it. Two things that I'd personally improve upon: first, there's the quite heavy video lag at the volcanic area with all the lights being emitted... it was quite hard to control Sackboy with the framerate so low, so you might wanna ease up on the effects in that area. The other minor nitpick is that some places of interest are either concealed by the dark setting or confusing in their architecture. For the former, there's the black switch that opens up the column of triangles - I only accidentally found out where that is, by trying to grab something, it's so dark there you can barely notice it unless you know what you're looking for. For the latter, there's the section in the last screenshot you posted in this thread. I was looking for a way to get under the black tree branch to get up to the silvery platform under it, because the branch itself looked so steep, I thought "Naah, that couldn't be the path the player is supposed to take...". Turns out it was, and it wasn't too hard to scale, but with the silver sufaces denoting platforms all along up to that point, it felt a bit confusing. But this is only a minor issue, I figured out what to do and where to go after all. One more thing I'd like to see ironed out a bit are the jagged edges, like with the tree housing the black switch, it can be very hard to scale a slippery surface when there's no foothold for Sackboy at all. Adding even a small horizontal edge to stand on can make a world of difference.

Pros:
+ Gorgeous art style
+ Difficulty
+ Varied platforming
Cons:
- Occasional frame rate dips
- Obscured or misleading objects
- Jagged edges on walkable surfaces

All in all, I loved the presentation and the platforming was pretty smooth too - and challenging to boot! - so there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the level deserves a :star::star::star::star::star: rating. Excellent job!

Wow, Shenoa77 - this level is GREAT! Well-thought-out platforming which is difficult, but not cheap and much of it feels completely original. I had a lot of fun all the way through.

Pros:

+ Beautiful use of materials
+ Dfficult! But the platorming fits with the nature of the floaty sackboy, so it works!
+ Great final boss fight.

Cons:

- The coloring on your treasure chests.... I would say spend a bit of time and build a treasure chest that fits your style.
- A few places where there was unexpected and frustrating plane shifting - such as when dragging the piece of material near the bombs to jump up to the above platform - you shift into the back layer - smear a bit of invisible dark matter and place it in front - these little details really matter.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart.... so far, that's 2 hearted levels from me - I also really enjoyed your "Front-Middle-Back" level. Great job!

Hello, Since I justposted an F4F level, I picked out some levels to F4F.
Your's was the first of three I checked out today.

visuals:
I thought that the enviroments where rather bland, some occasional changes here and there, but overall a little bit repetative, the lighting was really bland and could be spiced up quite a lot.
This would also add some more atmosphere to the overal feel.
Also especially at the boss-battle the camera will sometimes shake like a mad-man and this doesnt really help the battle at all and therefore affects gameplay.
I have been away from lbp for a while, and even though I have seen those explosions of light before, I havent seen them being used for enhancing lava, that was a good choice. (even if it was done before).

Gameplay wise,
After I thought it was the second checkpoint at the first lava-section just after swinging to the other side.
You can fall down all the way to the bottom of the level just by pressing "Down + jump" that can easily be solved by putting a layer in front of it/shield it off with a thin layer.
The platforms with the flaming circles where nice, but a little bit unforgiving..
Especially the last one since you had to do a totally different jump than the prev. two.
thanks to the infinite life checkpoint I did make it trough, but it was frustrating.
Come to think of it, I had the same frustration with the rotating metal-bridge parts.
My timing might be a bit off since I am still a bit rusty but it was just hell to get to the other side.
Nontheless, I like a chalenge.

Other:
There is some talking done in the level..
By who? is the air mysteriously telling you something?
I would suggest adding at least a creature/spirit/ghost that tells you the story.

Overall an okay level, but the author could really spend more time on the visuals and making sure the player cannot fall trough the level.
I would also suggest to author to spend some time with the songs of lbp and try to spice the level up a little more with sounds and music, since it became a little repetative after a few minutes of playing.

I gave it :star::star::star: because it was worth playing and tagged it "Timing" since your timight has to be near perfect at some spots.

My biggest suggestion though, play some more atmospheric levels with a lots of gameplay elements and let them inspire you for the future!

Okay Shenoa, now I'm convinced you're incapable of creating an "easy" level. Whew, some interesting platforming you placed in this level. I was so proud to have escaped with my life intact! The silver material you used is tight! And you like to make things pretty which I can dig, too.

Your boss was pretty charming, dancing a jig for me while I tried to cut him up, lol. Great job with him. Overall, I enjoyed your level and look forward to seeing more like this from you. Hearted, rated this 5 stars and tagged it "tricky".

Shen, so you finally make a level that I can (with much effort) play and finish on my own! (although the first time, a much greater player than I had to carry me to the finish line....).

I thought this level was beautiful and the platforming splendid. I felt like the atmosphere and visuals of this level were so you - beautiful, charming, cool and slightly mysterious. I loved the color combination throughout, the level had a certain steeliness and softness all at the same time. The platforming was difficult and challenging without being frustrating or annoying at all. I also liked the story and how you narrated it (a bard are you?). The secret bubble stashes were excellent as well.

I struggled to find something to give you feedback on, but the only thing I was going to mention was the bubble chests, which CCubbage already mentioned, and last time I played it, it looks like you changed it already.

So, this definitely was a 5 stars and a heart level for me. Can we please have another soon?

Sny: Thank you for your feedback. I reduced some of the LED lights on the emitter which was causing some of the lag, added a few spotlights in areas you mentioned were dark, and went through with the cut editing tool to smooth out some of those jagged areas on walkable surfaces. Your suggestions were all quite useful indeed.

Ccubbage: Great pic you uploaded. Thanks for playing the level and I hope we can play together soon enough. You were right, the yellow on those treasure chests didn?t quite match the motif of the level so I updated those as you mentioned. Mucho thanks for the suggestion.

Luos Desruc: Thanks for that healthy dose of criticism. I appreciate it. Closed up some of those gaps you mentioned about falling through the level. And changed up the music selection a bit which I thought would best mesh with the overall feel. Your feedback was extremely helpful.

Some pros:
-good unexpected story
-level name fit the level
-non repetitive obstacles
-funny ending "Hold the sword mighty knight and sayeth Cheese"! *takes picture*

Cons:
Difficulty: medium to hard
The more casual player may get frustrated with some of the platforming in this level, but I know you like to make things challenging shen

All in all - excellent job, hearted this. I particularly liked your use of sounds throughout the level. seemed like everything that moved had a sound attached to it. Each part at least had 3-4 sounds.

I went back and played this again.... love the new look of the chests! I managed to do much better in my score this time .

The only plane shifting issue I had was a TINY place, and it was so minor I wouldn't mention it. I think the first time I went through that single area seemed a bit more frustrating than it does now

Great job - even more fun the 2nd time through!

Beautiful. Amazing. Gorgeous. Tricky.

....but enough about you.

I love it. Awesome boss and perfect atmosphere. Really enjoyed watching this level come together and based on the other comments in this thread, I know you should be happy with some of those final changes you made. You know how I feel about the level...now I just need to get to the end of Do or Die!!! Argh..lol

Played though this one twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke I got through the first time It's challenging but very fair imo (and not just cuz I managed #2 on the boards for now... darn those electric panels!)

It's beautiful Shenoa - I love the multiple shades of silver and gray. I love the metallic sheen that everything has and the accents of blue and purple. It's just beautiful and magical but somber at the same time.

Your platforming is very demanding though. Not a lot of wiggle room for error in some places but I always felt it was fair. I could see the danger coming and had a sporting chance of avoiding it. There are a couple places like the tree just before the rotating platforms where the shape of the branches and the layers make it a little akward getting through but other than that I though the platforming was solid and gave a good challenge without being cheap in places. That's a hard balance to pull off so you should be proud of that.

The mainstream players are going to get about three challenges into it and give up but those guys and gals who love a little challenge are going to love this one. Nice work

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who commented or wrote me privately regarding this level.
Seriously, you all are inspiring. Well, most of you anyway, lol. Overall, the feedback has been great.

I noticed your score. You are awesome.

Thanks CCubbage for all your support and encouragement regarding this level.

Haha, thank Jaey. 1 out of the 4 traits is true enough and that?s the last one!
I wouldn?t have had the insight to change the material from the former grabbable Styrofoam to the silver metallic had it not been for your feedback when we last play-tested together. So we all owe you for that one.

So nice of you, Morgana. Thank you.

To be honest, I don't really consider the platforming to be that difficult. That?s just me. But I appreciate your honesty and comment about the more mainstream players giving up on it part way through. There are sections that I could definitely make a lot easier to please the more casual player but I thought twice about it and decided in the end to keep it the way it is.

It's nice to see that you haven't compromised your style for the sake of ratings Shenoa. Right on.

I don't know if I really have a ?style? but thanks anyway for the comment. I?m really happy that people have found it and are playing it. And I hope they?re enjoying it as well. As for ratings and hearts, hmm? I?d say the fact that my friends have played it and loved it is more rewarding for me than anything else.

I too went back and replayed this again, this time I got a higher score. I noticed you added gas below those rotating platforms which is good since I always fall and have to retrace my way back up to that section. So I guess you have no mercy on us moderate platformers. Now, you fall, you fail, you die. You're ruthless, lol.2009-12-09 12:39:00

Hi Divemonkey1,

Yeah, I received some feedback on that particular section from a buddy of mine. He kept falling off those rotating little platforms and then falling into the fire blocks below. I also added global lighting in one section with the addition of more infinite cp's to the level. Hopefully I won't have to make anymore edits.

Btw, love your avatar. Gives me a good chuckle everytime.

Hey SHENOA, I finally got around to playing this the other day after you mentioned it in group, and you were right, it's a very easy level. I haven't played it a 2nd time as I thought about it for score since I only have the urge to score high in easier levels, but haven't since. It's definitely not an extreme platformer. And here are my thoughts in brief . . .

Pros:

-The visual style in the level is very nice and fits the title.
-The title of the level is epic. I really love it.
-Optional parts for those players that like to go for all the bubbles to maximize score.

Cons:

-This is very minor, but I figured I'd mention it anyways. I got stuck at the beginning and had to restart level. On the hills near start where you move along each plane, in the back plane to the very left I jumped over there thinking there might be something hidden behind the middle plane, and when I tried to exit the hidden area there was an invisible wall stopping me and I couldn't jump over it. So since it's hard trying to find a super jump surface when you cant see your sack person and the ground they are on, I decided to just restart instead of keep trying.

Anyways, it was a very fun level.

I gave it :star::star::star::star::star:

^_^

Hi midnight_heist,

Once you negotiate your way passed the 3 rotating (circular) platforms, you just continue your way up to the ledge. You should see a cp there. I hope that clears it up for you. Let me know if we're talking about the same thing here. And thanks for playing this. Appreciate it.
