The Scroll of Eden series

Archive: 2 posts

LOOONG post ahead!!

Alright, so I decided to share with everyone the idea for a series I am creating. The name is Scroll of Eden, and it follows the adventurous Sack McCoy and his search for the aforementioned Scroll of Eden hidden in the temple of Matthias. The scroll is rumored to contain information on creation and how the world came to be. I?m attempting to make it story heavy for the most part, but in a way that doesn?t bog down the gameplay. It has revelations, plot twists and turns, and political intrigue!! Well, maybe not so much political =P I write a lot, work with RPG Maker (all of them), and am a fan of a good story, so I always try to make something with a worthwhile story.

It spans 5 levels, each with its unique theme and gameplay elements. The first level is the Mountain Path to the temple for example, and has the player progressing through it to reach the temple. The second level will be a portion of the temple, having player going through intricate puzzle and trap rooms. And so on. Each level will end with an intricate boss fight (the first one isn?t much of a ?fight,? however). Each level will overlap with another level in some shape or form. Later levels will give hints and clues to previous levels. For example, in the second level in the temple, a side path will lead outside the temple and in this cave area. There, you will see an inaccessible area (for that level) and prize bubble. You?ll get a clue as to how to get to it, and use that knowledge in the first level to reach it. There are actually two of these in the first level alone, and the element continues throughout the levels.

One idea I have for one of the later levels is The Forest of Flame and Frost. In this level, there are two nearly identical levels, one with a fire theme and one with ice. Each level will be connected with some sort of elevator ala Metroid. It's supposed to be a form of teleportation between levels, because the forest itself is just one forest in theory. Anyways, things you do in one level will effect another level. For example, you can?t get past this area in the fire forest because there are blocks of fire. Move up to the ice forest and the blocks are ice. Move the blocks, go back down to the fire level and the blocks are moved as well and you and move on. Later you come up to a room where you can?t get over this gap in either level. They both have a switch, but the ice one is frozen and can?t be used. Go down to the fire one, hit the switch, the gap fills with ?water? (which you can?t cross or you die, obviously), go back up the ice level and now it's frozen. Progress further. And this continues throughout the level.

I also have an idea for a ?gravity? room, although no ideas written down so far (just in my head). This will be a large area that will rotate 45 degrees in a certain direction using switches. I have a few puzzles in my head for it. I have an idea on how it will work, but since I haven?t put it to a test in create mode I?m not sure how it will turn out. I?m confident, however. And I might take an idea from a PS3 level I saw on youtube once of a vehicle that travels up walls. If this works for the PSP version, and if I can get it working well, I?ll add it.

I?m working on the first level currently, and am almost done. Spent, oh, many many many many hours so far? At least 45 so far, probably more. A lot of that work is making sure everything resets and that players have an alternate way to complete something if something doesn?t go right. I lost many hours making things and having to redo them and adding things because I planned poorly in respect of resetting. It sucks that only the players that think outside the box will ever notice these workarounds =P So far the first level is unbreakable. I have the second level planned out already. I have most of the level and puzzle rooms drawn out on paper. I have this notepad for whenever I come up with an idea, I draw a square (represents a room) then draw the puzzle, trap, challenge, etc. and how it works and whatnot. I still have to draw the level itself. I also plan to have custom music in the final level, maybe the overly done To Zanarkand XD I?m not sure, tho. I can?t read music and have to play by ear. I can come up with my own music, but putting it together with LPB? I have to plan it out extensively beforehand.

I've had absolutely no experience with LPB before this. I never even played the PS3 version =( This is my first series and first level, so I am still learning. I?m not the best yet, but I hope to get better. I?m not an artist (I?m okay at it), I?m mainly a writer and technical guy. So I THINK I can get everything working perfectly, but it might be a little ugly.. I hope to get some help in that respect from everyone here.

So what do you all think?

Sounds rather awesome to my ears. The only problem you might have is that it seems like a verrrry large task ahead of you - as long as you have the perseverance to see through all the levels, it should work out well.

Can't wait to see the finished product - sounds like an epic story!
