GruntosUK
The Epic Serial Specialist
Interview conducted by MrsSpookyBuz (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3896)

It's hard enough trying to create a level that is playable, fun and involving. But imagine building multi-level series' that get better and better. Well, that's GruntosUK's speciality, and, boy, he sure excels at it! From Siberia to Mars and back down again to LBPC, he thankfully found the time to answer some questions...

--------------------------

It sure looks cold, but the action soon heats up in
GruntosUK's "From Siberia With Love" series.

The Low-Down

What video games did you enjoy playing before LBP was released?
I've played videogames for 26 years now, so to list all of them I enjoyed before LBP would take WAY to much space up. My favourite games other than LBP are Mario64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Half Life. I've also made my own levels in games for many years, starting with Doom, then Duke Nukem 3D, to the Quake series and onto Halflife.

Since LBP was released, I can?t get interested in any other game, I play them for an hour and get sick and put LBP back in. And that shows no signs of changing as yet.

What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like?
The first full level I built was Subterranean Sackboy Blues. It's still on my moon to play. I still think it sort of holds up to my other levels actually. It took me two months to make it after the un-glue bug basically destroyed the first finished version and I rebuilt everything from scratch. It is a little rough looking, I didn?t use the corner editor at the time, and the logic is very big and clunky, but it's nice to play every now and again to see where I started.

I accidentally overwrote it with another level after it had been out for a couple of months and deleted all the plays and hearts. Thinking about it, that level caused me a lot of heartache and anger, but in a way, prepared me for the bug filled life of a creator

What levels have you published to date?
So far I have published Subterranean Sackboy Blues, the 6 part Siberia series, Unhearted: Drakes Misfortune, and 4 parts of the Mars Attacks series. The Mars series will be my longest, 7 parts when it's concluded. That will be 15 levels on my moon.

Which of these is your own favourite? And why?
If I could take the idea of Unhearted (and the rocket cheetah fun park), add the puzzles of Siberia 5 to the set pieces of Mars Attacks 1, and then stick in the visuals and design of Woveneye and the overall story of Mars Attacks (wait and see!). That level would be my best yet, and also a random mess!!

I like either Unhearted or Mars 1 the best though I think. I was so unsure about Mars 1 when it was getting built I almost scrapped the whole series. I did?nt think there was enough game play or things to do in it (its actually a very basic level to play I think). A couple of friends, CCubbage and Vortex, kept me on the right path though with some great suggestions, and I?m pleased they did.

I?ll plump for Unhearted, its all wrapped up well in one level, and has the fun park, which I still play around in to see how far I can launch back through the level to this day.

Are there any other creators who inspire you?
There are loads, and I will probably forget some or leave some out, but all the people have inspired me something in their levels. So, in no particular order, CCubbage, _OIL, NinjaWcWiz, xkappax, antposteller, Wexfordian, rtm223, OCK, jackofcourse, jaeyden. I've got to mention VMethos to, he's only done one level, but it's probably one of my favourites on LBP. The most recent is Antposteller, his levels are sublime.

Johnee was the biggest influence for Mars Attacks, I?d loved his style on Future Warzone and had to try something similar. And for a member of the community to get a job at MM, that should totally inspire everyone.

What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating?
Well, as I said above, the glue glitch took out my first ever completed level. I had Siberia 3 almost completed when it got the "failed to load level" error, I had to completely restart that one to. Recently, a crisis of confidence and hating what I'd created made me scrap a 90% version of Mars 3 that took 4 weeks and restart it. And then to add to all that, when I started Mars 4, my workshop where I store puzzle ideas, logic and items for future levels got the failed to load to and I lost months worth of work and assets.

So plenty has happened to me, but for some reason I keep coming back. I must be a glutton for punishment, but I need my daily fix.

What?s your pet hate in LBP?
How long do you have? It's mostly people low rating levels and leaving bad tags because they can't finish it, or are simply doing it to spoil your chances on cool levels, or because they just can. And Bomb levels, and "failed to load level" errors, and not being able to hide layers in create mode, and the grid sometimes not aligning, and the creator blocks where I stare at the screen vacant, or real life interrupting LBP...

If you worked for Media Molecule, what tool/object/material would you have liked to see developed?
I'd like a lethalise switch, so we can set materials on fire, turn them to gas, or electrify them through player input. That could lead to some great puzzles and hazards.

Something to allow you to control vehicles with the triggers and analogue stick directly would be cool, too.

Any tips for new creators?
Persevere. Use the showcase and F4F, and play lots of other levels.

Stunning set pieces and atmosphere in GruntosUK's
seminal "Mars Attacks" series.

Digging Deeper

Sorry, but I'm going to have to start with a complaint! My job here is to replay your levels and try to take some decent photos to accompany the article. But your levels, mister, are so involving, complex and OMG-what-the-heck-is-happening-now, I could hardly get the camera out quick enough! How do you plan so meticulously?
I don't plan and I don't work off sketches or anything like that. I know what I have to add in for the story, and have a couple of game play ideas to get it across, but I build as I go. I like to make the player overlap, because I?m either proud of a certain section and want people to see it more than once, or because I want to save thermo and re-use stuff. A lot of people say they get lost in my levels at first, that?s not a conscious design decision, but when you spend so much time creating and playing them, you know it off by heart. Luckily for me, it seems to work well, and people always get there in the end.

As for OMG-what-the-heck-is-happening-now sections, I like to create set pieces that interrupt the flow of puzzles and platforming, something cool to look at that makes you want to see whats coming next. That is a conscious design decision.

You're well known for your multi-level series'. Did you always intend to make sequels, or was it a case of seeing how the first ones were received?
I always plan a series, I have the story in my head and it sometimes takes more levels than I had initially planned, but I get there in the end (Siberia was planned as 3 levels, Mars as 4). Of course, if they are well received that helps, but I still think I would continue doing them regardless, if I personally enjoy playing and creating them, that?s the main thing.

LBP is a great creative output; I can't really draw, or write full stories very well, so I think LBP is my best way of getting things across. I can use the basic story ideas and twists I have, then fill in the rest with game play elements, which is perfect for me.

There are always lots of things to do in your creations. Are there any particular methods you use to achieve this?
That's a hard question to answer, actually. If I think if it's fun, its plays well, and it fits with the theme of the level, I hope other people will think the same. I do spend a lot of time staring blankly at the screen waiting for some idea to pop in my head, sometimes it takes 10 minutes, sometimes days, but it comes eventually.

I always try to add something a little different in, I know I always have backtracking, puzzles and secrets, but I like to try and change things up a little, and make it seem fresh. I think I succeed, or, at least I hope I do!

All I can say is I have lots of good play testers that come up with good suggestions to make things a little better. I?m also constantly playing through them myself, looking for new things to add that will make the game play better.

All things considered, what's your favourite part of the creation process?
Publishing, without a doubt. Finally unlocking the level on my remote moon and awaiting the results of the first few plays always gives me butterflies. And the first few bits of feedback from the level showcase section are a nerve wracking experience to. Although I'm nervous, I always enjoy the "I hope they like it" feeling. Thankfully it's all gone great so far.

What can we expect from GruntosUK in the future?
Well, Mars Attacks is to be finished (there?s another 3 parts in various stages on my moon), I hope people got the twist in Mars 4, but theres another couple later down the line that will hopefully bring it to a satisfying, if surprising, end. After that, I don't know. I don't want to create another series, but I said that after Siberia, and look where I am now!! It all depends on the next idea I suppose, but its finishing Mars Attacks for the moment.

I?m also working on a collaboration, that's starting to look VERY good.

And finally, what's the meaning of life?
42 of course!!!

This Martian boss is NOT happy! Blast it
with paint to put it out of its misery!

Our Conclusions

Saying GruntosUK's levels are immersive is like saying the Sahara Desert is 'quite big'. The levels almost always develop like all great stories do, inviting you to play more, to discover more, and to have a great time as you uncover secrets that you didn't even realise were there. I wasn't joking about not being able to get the camera out quickly enough - either something unexpected would happen and I'd miss the shot, or I simply FORGOT to take pictures because I was having so much fun! And that's the crux of GruntosUK - intelligent, immersive levels that put a huge smile on your face and a true sense of achievement once you reach the scoreboard. I can't stress how much I recommend his levels to those who may not have played them. They are top-notch! Well done, Grant.

Thanks to CC as always for posting this.

And thanks to Grant for his patience, and of course for producing some wonderful levels. I had loads of fun playing them again.

I sure hope he's able to drop by and see all these lovely messages of support - as Morgana says, he deserves the Spotlight on himself for a change after everything he does for the community here.

Well done again, Grant.

And thanks to you, MrsSpookyBuz, for doing all these interviews. I love them!
Grant's one of my really good friends in lbp, so it's really nice to see him spotlighted. Never have I seen someone so dedicated to a game before. I think he's tied with wex for turning out the most quality levels in the shortest amount of time. ^_^

Also, working with him on 7 days was a brilliant time, because I got a glimpse at how he worked, and it really was quite amazing. I just don't think the same way he does, and it's absolutely awesome to see.

Congrats, Grant. A spotlight well deserved.

One of the best creators, and the MASTER of layers!

Going back a while now, I remember when OCK couldn't get to his PS3 and he asked me to look at Siberia 3. I had never played any from the series yet. We had about an hour before the spotlight had to be out.... and the level was locked unless I played the first 2!

So.... had to play all 3 at once - I was stunned! Absolutely brilliant. Ever since then, I've been waiting with baited breath for each GruntosUK release!

You're one of the greats, my friend! You're one of those creators that has all-around talent: Story, graphics, humor, gameplay.

Great interview!

I'm not comparing, I love both series. Wexfordian and GruntosUK have totally different styles. That's what makes LBP so great - the different personalities of the creators.

I should elaborate... "Master of 'Wasn't I here just a minute ago?? Wait.... where the hell am I?? Umm... oh - here I am... How did I get here?' layer gameplay."

Another wonderful interview MrsSB, I love grant's work and I must say it was a pleasure to work with him and the other guys on producing a full level in a week in the beta - it was tough keeping up with a guy that works so fast but an awesome experience.

Gruntos is definitely The Man. I played through Gruntos's Siberia series and deleted an entire level and started over, because his level design crushed mine into fine powder, and therefore had to be "emulated".

Well done and well deserved, Gruntos.

Hey, I was wondering when the almighty Grant was going to be interviewed!

Great article, Spooky. Grant truly is the master of backtracking and using all the layers to their fullest potential. It's started to rub off on me! Having seen him create, I don't know how he churns out quality level after quality level (although, I think alcohol may have been a factor when I was with him... ).

I've played every one of his levels, and I think he may have been the first creator I've ever hearted. I was like a little kid looking up to his favorite superstar, and now it feels weird to be rubbing shoulders with him on a weekly basis! Thanks for all your work, Grant!

I cannot believe it! How on earth can this Gruntos character get an interview when Grant is so much more awesome! Oh wait... they aren't really twins? Then how does he get so much stuff done so fast!!!? LOL!!!

Grant my friend, fantastic interview!!! I have been a big fan of your work and have enjoyed immensely those keys that get sent my way for play testing as well as the cherished sneak peeks. You are one of the only creators that I feel I should take notes while playing so I don't get lost or forget about whatever else I should have been doing before I jumped and ran around all over to end up in front of where I just was. Marvelous stuff!!! One of the only guys I know that thinks in 3D Tetris pieces and draws them out in level format! Hard to believe that so much genius comes from someone whose sack costume flaunts a nail through the temples!! ...though maybe that explains it!!

MrsSpookyBuz... you are the master of the interview and the queen of the Creator Spotlight!! Fantastic read and really insightful questions! I get done with these and reread them over and over as it is so much fun and so interesting! Thanks so much for doing these as they are really moments to be cherished and so wonderful to give these folks some much deserved attention.

Congrats to you both!!

Brilliant, thanatos!

There's always an assumption that if a creator has had quite a few levels published that are popular, everyone will know them. So in this respect, I'm really chuffed you'll now play these great levels.

That's the other side to these Creator Spotlights. On the one hand, they're a kind of celebration of the work these people do, and on the other they're here to introduce their work to people who may not have had the chance to play them.

Oh, and it's a great excuse for me to be nosey, too!

Great Read indeed. Well Done MrsSpooky and to Grant for another interesting and helpful Read.

I remember just spending about 2 hours on lbp just playing through all of Grant's Siberia Series and it was none stop fun. Just didn't get boring. You get 6 awesome levels in a row to play, what could be better? Seven yes, but I'd need to leave to grab something to eat.
Lovely stuff. Thanks

Hi Grant! Congratulations on your Spotlight - it's very much deserved and judging by the comments on here, the general consensus is that you're a genius. I concur wholeheartedly.

I've had the pleasure of playing your levels a few times, and agree with everyone here about the sheer depth and how involved they all are. Well done, sir.

When Lisa was replaying them, it was amazing how many times she was so wrapped up in the level she didn't take any photographs! The time absolutely flew by, and on that particular evening we both forgot to eat! (I blame you, naturally ).

Creating must sometimes be an isolating experience, wondering how your levels are going to be received. Well, I hope this Spotlight and all the comments gives you a fair idea of how high in esteem we hold you.

You rock. Full stop.

Congratulations GrantosUK on the very well deserved spotlight! I echo what everybody said above about you and your levels, I couldn't come up with a better way to articulate your awesomeness so I'll just stick with that. Your levels are just fantastic and so completely engrossing, the fact that you just follow your artistic calls just highlight your wonderful talent. Much like the SpookyBuzes, I spent an entire day playing your Siberia series and Mars Attack series, forgetting to eat or tend to my other calls of nature. I do begrudge you a bit because I am still stuck in Mexico!!! (Yeah, I blame you, not my inability to properly dodge plasma balls ).

Thank you for the great interview yet again MrsSpookyBuz - I heard the NYTimes is looking for a reporter of your caliber?

I couldn't resist commenting about all your great levels. For the longest time, I've wondered how you could meticulously pack so many secrets, backtracking and multi-layer sequences, hidden easter eggs, and other cool stuff into small complex spaces. Brilliant stuff, need to replay everything now all over again to challenge my brain. I've always been a fan of your puzzling & engaging gameplay. My only gripe is that some people never give these types of levels a chance, as they can't seem to figure out that key 'b' goes further down the corridor and to the right, and give up. Anyway congrats!2009-12-06 01:36:00

I've heard of this fellow. Where can I buy his levels? I went to Gamestop today and demanded copies of "Mars Attacks" and "From Siberia with Love", but the clerk just gave me the stink-eye. I tried demanding louder, thinking it might help put these levels into my hands, but it just made the clerk give me an even bigger stink-eye, and when he realized I wasn't leaving, he asked me to leave.

Drastic times, I thought to myself. So I took a copy of Zelda: Spirit Tracks hostage and held a plastic wii-sword attachment up to it and then tried demanding "Mars Attacks" even louder. It STILL didn't work.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this Gamestop problem? I've tried whining, complaining, crying, and even kicking shelves and clawing pathetically at a christmas tree display. And yes, the crying was accompanied by a ridiculous amount of spit and snot. And yes, I was sitting on the floor in front of everyone. I just don't know what else to try.

P.S. I don't actually have internet for another week. If you're wondering how I'm posting this, well, that's a mystery for the ages.

Maybe you knocked the clerk out and stole his house keys and wallet and busted into his house and used his computer just to write about your day! The perfect crime!

Can't believe I missed this one! As always, another great insightful interview from MrsSpookyBuz. Once again I learned a lot from one of my personal favorite authors. I think when it comes to dedication no other creator has it like Gruntos!

Btw, when is Unhearted 2 coming? The first might only be rated 3 Stars, but it sure is one of my favorite levels.

Thanks for the comments. I havnt thought about Unhearted 2 actually. I've never played either Uncharted to be honest, I just liked the name. I might have a think about it and do it over Xmas. I created the first one when I was sick of doing Siberia, and an reaching that point with Mars Attacks too 2009-12-17 10:45:00

You should definetly make the sequel and I highly recommend you play Uncharted 2, you won't be disappointed. The game's settings are quite different from the first game and much more beautiful so you have a lot more to work with.

Gruntos is my brother from another mother... I can tell you first hand he knows what he's doing at all times, and even if he doesn't, it all works out in the end. Couldn't find a more enjoyable, intuitive, and experienced creator to work with... dude's a laugh and a half, and an incredibly dedicated, talented, and unique creator.2009-12-18 18:59:00

Aww, what a darn shame that Grant has had 'real life stuff' going on while all you kind folk have been bantering about him.

Just before this is locked and archived, thanks to everyone who posted here and for letting Grant know how special he is.

See you soon, Grant
